  6. But it has since disappears into the Sea of Galilee. An ancient fishing boat was dug out of the mud here and is now displayed in a local museum. It seems probable that she came from Magdala, a small village on the shore of the Sea of Galilee, where Jesus preached immediately after the feeding of the four thousand with seven loaves and a few small fishes (Matt. 15 : v. 39). In fact, some of the modern translations of the New Testament give "Mary of Magdala" instead of "Mary Magdalene". We know Jesus went there at least once ... Matthew 15:39 And he sent away the multitude, and took ship, and came into the coasts of Magdala. Not of great importance as Mary could have come to him any where in Galilee. Jesus was often there! Lk. 7:36-50; John 12:1-11 and Mrk 14:1-9; & Matt 26:6-13 These I believe are three incidents involving in Luke 7 a woman “which was a sinner” in the house of a Pharisee, in John 12 it is the only named woman - Mary the sister of Martha and Lazarus in their own house – the first two, both anointings of the feet, and the third, recorded in Matthew and Mark, an anointing of Jesus’ head in the house of a healed Leper The first involves ... ... CLICK for ... SHOWS BUT DON’T READ ... Luke 7:37 And, behold, a woman in the city, which was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat at meat in the Pharisee's house, brought an alabaster box of ointment, SAY ... “a woman in the city, which was a sinner” and a Pharisee called Simon. Apparently this woman came into the Pharisee’s house, or may be the central courtyard, uninvited, knelt at the feet of Jesus, washed his feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. She kissed his feet and anointed them with ointment. Simon was shocked saying to himself, if Jesus “were a prophet, would have known who and what manner of woman this <was> that toucheth him: for she is a sinner” and rejected her attentions. Instead, Jesus forgave her sins which were many, because her love was so great. She was sent away in peace, saved by her faith. To say this was Mary Magdalene makes unreasonable assumptions such as "out of whom went seven devils" refers to her sin of harlotry. As far as I can see in scripture the possession of devils always means illness or madness, never sin. John (10:20) records that people said of Jesus, "He hath a devil, and is mad; why hear ye him?“ Also, some claim that " Magdalene" does not necessarily mean of " Magdala“ but is a term for harlotry! I can find no support for this idea. CLICK for NEXT slide ... BUT SEE NO CHANGE ... Luke 7:36-50; John 12:1-11 and Matt 26:6-13; & Mark 14:1-9
  11. Furthermore, if the happenings at the end of Luke 7 are reckoned to be Mary Magdalene’s conversion, the action of the woman who anointed the feet of Jesus with ointment does not read like the behaviour of a demoniac. Or, if, as those who claim that this woman was Mary Magdalene say, Jesus had previously cured her madness and caused her to love him so that this anointing was in gratitude for her cure, how very unlikely that Mary would either have returned to, or fallen into, a life of notorious unchastity. In my opinion these ideas are totally unreasonable and out of keeping with her character as subsequently revealed in scripture. Mary Magdalene was a sick woman, not a notorious sinner, and I think it would do her a great wrong to say otherwise. We feel too that had Luke just described an incident involving Mary Magdalene at the end of Luke 7, then his description of her in Luke 8:2 would have made some reference to her anointing of Jesus just previously. No! The opening of chapter 8 has the ring of introducing Mary Magdalene for the first time telling us that she was fairly wealthy, and already a follower of Jesus, travelling with him and assisting in ministering to his material needs. 12. AUTO ... John 12 ... DON’T READ and the context shows this is the sister of Martha and Lazarus. To suggest Mary Magdalene is the sister of Martha and Lazarus involves contending that at least the Luke and John accounts are the same incident. This is based upn both being in the house of a Simon, but one was described as Simon the leper, and the other as Simon a Pharisee. This idea takes no account of the fact that Luke is clearly writing of happening early in Jesus’ ministry and John right at the end. Furthermore, that these two men should have the same name is not surprising. " Simon " (like " Mary " was a very common name at that time. Among the Twelve there were two " Simons " (Peter and Zelotes), so it is not surprising to meet with two Simons among the thousands of Jews Jesus made contact with. Simon the leper lived at Bethany; Simon the Pharisee almost certainly lived in Galilee, probably in Nain or Capernaum. Another reason for contending that Mary Magdalene was sister of Martha and Lazarus is that no mention is made of Mary, sister of Martha and Lazarus, at the crucifixion or around the tomb, and it is inconceivable that such a devoted friend of Jesus was not there. But what of Martha and Lazarus, they are not mentioned and does not mean they were not there! Then we come to ... ... CLICK for NEXT slide ...
  13. AUTO ... 3. Jesus head anointed ... ... The Mark and Matthew accounts are clearly the same agreeing in every detail. They cannot be the same as item 2. Different houses – different time. This one involved anointing Jesus’ head and the other two his feet, Luke’s account was at the beginning of Jesus’ ministry, CLICK for ... John’s 6 days before the passover and this one 2 days before. There is more we could say about this, but time presses and we hope we’ve shown that these incidents do not involve Mary Magdalene. Therefore, in assessing her character we do not have to take them into account. John 12:1 Then Jesus six days before the passover came to Bethany, where Lazarus was which had been dead , whom he raised from the dead. 2 There they made him a supper; and Martha served: but Lazarus was one of them that sat at the table with him. 3 Then took Mary a pound of ointment of spikenard, very costly, and anointed the feet of Jesus , and wiped his feet with her hair: and the house was filled with the odour of the ointment. Mark 14:1-2 1 After two days was the feast of the passover , and of unleavened bread: and the chief priests and the scribes sought how they might take him by craft, and put him to death. ... 3 And being in Bethany in the house of Simon the leper , as he sat at meat, there came a woman having an alabaster box of ointment of spikenard very precious; and she brake the box, and poured it on his head. ... 9 Verily I say unto you, Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached throughout the whole world, this also that she hath done shall be spoken of for a memorial of her .
