The Bible only mentions Mary Magdalene 12 times. However, she is buried under a sea of conflicting traditions that obscure the simple life of this woman whom Jesus delivered from great spiritual bondage. In this sermon we will explore how Mary's deliverance spurred her to a life of devotion to Jesus and determination to be with him, come what may. And we will also see how Jesus rewarded her with a very special delight to her delivered soul.

Editor's Notes
Prior to WWII, there were a host of “Barnstormer” teams in baseball. These were like circus acts designed to draw a crowd into the ball games, especially during the depression when ticket sales were at an all time low. The teams were bizarre. There were players with one arm and players with one leg. But, one of the most memorable of the barnstormer players was Jackie Mitchell. On March 25, 1931, Joe Engel, owner of the Chatanooga Lookouts, signed 17 year old Jackie Mitchell to his AA minor league team, so he could promote his team as being the only one in professional baseball with a female pitcher. During the 1930s, it was also common for major league teams to play games against minor league affiliates. On April 2, 1931, the New York Yankees played an exhibition game against the Chatanooga Lookouts. Jackie Mitchell was brought into the game and proceeded to strike out two players in a row… Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig! Ruth complained so bitterly that the baseball commissioner pulled Jackie Mitchell’s contract, stating that baseball was too strenuous for women. However, the accomplishments of Jackie Mitchell, Mamie “Peanut” Johnson and Edith Houghton proved that hypothesis to be dead wrong. Jackie Mitchell was the ultimate second stringer, a talented pitcher not allowed to play because she took down two of Major League Baseball’s two greatest players of all time!

Magdala was located on the northwestern shore of the Sea of Galilee. Excavations of the ruins show that this was a prosperous town that specialized in fish farming. Archaeologists have found four large tanks fed by the underground aquifer. Back rooms were likely used for the salting of the raised fish, leading to the name of the town, the Tower of Fish.

Jesus’ disciples were constantly jockeying for position. Andrew was the first to follow Jesus. To use our terminology, he had dibs. He could have said that he deserved a place at the bedside of Jairus’ daughter. He could have complained about not being on the Mt. of Transfiguration. He could have even asserted that had Jesus invited him to come alongside in the Garden of Gethsemane, he would have stayed awake. Andrew could have easily asserted that he was less volatile than Peter… more reliable. He could have even made a case that he was more worthy. But Andrew was content to take a lesser role with gratitude and grace. What an example for each of us.
