Marvel Studios produced their first successful Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film, Iron Man, in 2008 starring Robert Downey Jr., a risky choice given his history with drug convictions. This success led Disney to purchase Marvel for $4 billion in 2009. Prior to the Disney acquisition, Marvel had experience in publishing through comic books creating popular characters, and in interactive sectors through video games and toys based on their comic characters.
