Market Segmentation
Market segmentation is a
marketing term that refers to
aggregating prospective buyers
into groups or segments with
common needs and who respond
similarly to a marketing action.
Market segmentation allows a
company to focus its resources on
efforts that can be the most
profitable.
Four Types of
Market Segmentation
1. Psychographic Segmentation
2. Geographic Segmentation
3. Behavioral Segmentation
4. Demographic Segmentation
1. Psychographic Segmentation
Psychographic segmentation takes
into account the psychological
aspects of consumer behavior by
dividing markets according to
lifestyle, personality traits, values,
opinions, and interests of
consumers.
2. Geographic Segmentation
Geographic segmentation creates different
target customer groups based on
geographical boundaries. Because
potential customers have needs,
preferences, and interests that differ
according to their geographies,
understanding the climates and geographic
regions of customer groups can help
determine where to sell and advertise, as
well as where to expand your business.
3. Behavioral Segmentation
Behavioral segmentation divides
markets by behaviors and decision-
making patterns such as purchase,
consumption, and usage. For
instance, younger buyers may tend
to purchase body wash, while
older consumer groups may lean
towards soap bars.
4. Demographic Segmentation
Demographic segmentation sorts a
market by demographic elements
such as age, education, income,
family size, race, gender,
occupation, nationality, and more.
Demographic information examples
include: age, race, ethnicity, gender, marital
status, income, education, and employment.
You can easily and effectively collect these types
of information with survey questions.
In Research we also collect demographic
Profile. Research needs to assess who to survey
and how to breakdown overall survey response
data into meaningful groups of respondents.
Both assessments are based on demographic
considerations.
