Because of how we work when supporting our clients, we have a very unique “glimpse” into how over 5000 Executive Search companies and almost 20 000 decision makers react – the majority of which being located in Europe; and we collect and analyze how they respond; and we observe if and what kind of trends there are to leverage them into better human resources and career management & more effective job search methods.
Before there are trends, there are market signals, which we usually keep to ourselves. But these are not usual times, so we decided to share those market signals by the end of each week. If the country / context is important, we’ll add them. Otherwise, we’ll keep it general for confidentiality.
Collected Quotes from CEOs and HR Directors (heading 3)
The vast majority of executives are with market leaders in their respective industries. By default, the board members are members of local boards; if not, we’ll indicate the exception.
IT: During the first wave of reductions in the company, 1/3 of the team was laid off – including me. The company is now frozen and will only start functioning again once the market is more stable.
Education: At the beginning of 2020 I managed to escape China and come back to Poland earlier than I planned. Thankfully, I found a job pretty quickly. Everything is remote.
Retail/Pharma: What changed is our case are the challenges that we have to face. ¼ of my team was laid off and it’s been hard to make up for it.
Cosmetics: I am responsible for new business and innovations – since the pandemic it’s been hard to present anything to the management board. The company has focused more on disinfectants than on our regular products (cosmetics).

Production: At the beginning of the pandemic we were forced to lay some employees off due to clients freezing their investments. Already in May, however, everything started functioning again.
IT: Our industry is doing well, we’re definitely not complaining about our results.
Banking: Our company’s strategy was clear from the beginning, and at first the employees were working readily. After the holidays, the decision to change the strategy was made. That became an excuse for some employees to lower their productivity.

Market Signals - where do they come from?
We started by monitoring the number of LinkedIn job ads in 18 European countries in Week 13 of 2020 (mid-March) – and extended our observations to ultimately 38 countries in Europe since Week 15. This allows us to measure a KPI that gives quite a good feel of the overall trend on the global job market.
These are not usual times, so we decided to share our market signals by the end of each week. If the country / context is important, we’ll add them. Otherwise, we’ll keep it general for confidentiality.
Collected Quotes from CEOs and HR Directors
Health: Following a merger in 2020, which resulted in staff reductions, COVID slowed the business down considerably and halted expansion. Neither us, our competitors nor business partners are hiring. This means that people have to look for work outside their areas of expertise.
Logistics: The business suffered due to CV-19. We had to adapt to a new way of working, develop a new strategy. Luckily, the quality of work didn’t decrease.
Pharma: Overall, the pandemic hasn’t had a negative influence on the profits – our sales actually increased by 3% in 2020 compared to 2019. We did, however, have to lay off almost a third of our employees.

Banking: In order to create space for business development we decided to focus on the new technology sector – business services, IT and e-commerce.
Electronics: We closed 2020 with a record in sales despite COVID-19. Our turnover has increased by 140% in 4 years and we employ almost twice as many people as in 2016.
Logistics & Supply Chain: On a business note 2020 was surprisingly good. We exceeded our sales expectations in CEE, but also in countries like Spain or Italy. Our services (tracking supply chains) worked very well in industries like FMCG, pharma, e-commerce & logistics.
Banking: The bank I’m employed in was supposed to be sold, but the transaction was frozen because of the pandemic. However, it will probably happen in one or two years.

Building materials: Because of the fact that we didn’t have detailed data from 2019, it was hard to do a proper estimate of 2020. Fortunately, the restructurization allowed us to avoid lay-offs. We know that there were many in the industry.
Premium cosmetics: The pandemic had no influence on our business thanks to our stable e-commerce. We are safe.
Investment fund: 2020 was intense. After a brief storm in the spring we had to act quickly to adapt to the new reality. Our workload increased, especially during the fist wave of the pandemic. We had to work out new strategies and secure our sources of funding. The good side: the digitalization process stepped up and that was very beneficial.
Tourism: My 2020 looked like an MBA class in crisis management that I had to pass within a week.

We’ve continued reaching out to CEOs, HR Directors, investors, board members and candidates that we know personally, to take the temperature. Below you’ll find their shortened quotes in no particular order.
Automotive: The industry is doing really well. We have a portfolio full with orders, but we have to fight for new contracts with highly developed competitors. Our company hasn’t been directly impacted by CV-19. At first, everything slowed down, but when I joined the company in May, things were already getting back to normal.
Machinery: My company is doing well in general, production is in full swing. Unfortunately, it is a bit more difficult to work in Poland now, as many clients are closed for outsiders. Growing a business is a challenge these days.
FMCG: In order to get the best results these days you have to work creatively. Some countries are noting losses of more than 20%. Problems keep getting more serious in big city centers. Consumers prefer prepackaged products and are not as keen to buy in bulk.
Aviation & Aerospace: The pandemic’s influence on my industry is noticeable, although not as dramatic as on other industries. Changes have been structural and long-sighted.

The vast majority of executives are with market leaders in their respective industries. By default, the board members are members of local boards; if not, we’ll indicate the exception.
Legal: My clients have started to form their budgets again and are changing the contract conditions so it’s not perfectly stable at the moment.
International consulting: Our sales have significantly dropped because of the international traffic restrictions.
Digital transformation: Finding clients online has become much harder than before. What’s more, we are looking for European and American suppliers, and because of the travel restrictions it’s not easy to cooperate. Apart from that, USA in mainly focused on the American companies, so our situation is difficult.
Investment fund: Many companies are being very cautious and have put their investments on hold. We can also see some political influence.
Finance: There have been some lay offs and reductions in our company, but it has more to do with the general situation of the group, not just our subsidiary.

The art of interpreting signals (precursors of trends) is - and always has been - important in navigating financial markets and economies. If you are an experienced manager or executive who wants to manage their career and/or job search processes wisely, look at the signals of the job market which are inseparably embedded in the VUCA landscape of today's world.

Construction: Our business has been stable, but we do expect negative consequences with a delay in 2021.
Banking: The pandemic has influenced the way we organize our work. We have to rotate working from home and at the office. When someone tests positive, we have to close the entire branch for at least three weeks, which has a big impact on our goals.

A candidate quote:
Global Role / Retail: After more than 10 years with the company, I am now one of the 30% laid-off employees. I understand that it had to happen because of our industry, but I am saddened by how it happened: HR came in one morning and gave me 6 hours to clear out my desk.

The vast majority of executives are with market leaders in their respective industries. By default, the board members are members of local boards; if not, we’ll indicate the exception.
Accounting / BPO: Our industry has not been affected yet, but we have started to plan how to react strategically in case it hits us. Our long-term contracts are safe, but we are aware that it might change. That’s why we are looking for an alternative approach and new possibilities. We can’t predict the decisions of the US global headquarters.
Telecommunications: Our results have been skyrocketing. The increased demand for better networks and online solutions has affected our industry in a very positive way.
And the Executive Search side:
After conversations with several Executive Search Consultants, with the exception of 2 firms (one international and one with a focus on DACH & CEE who claim to have record financial years), all other recruitment companies have shared that their turnover has decreased by 40-60%.

The vast majority of executives are with market leaders in their respective industries. By default, the board members are members of local boards; if not, we’ll indicate the exception.
IT / Financial Services: We managed to move to remote working smoothly and efficiently. Because of the financial market’s variability our costs decreased and we noted a significant increase in revenues – we didn’t have to lay anybody off.
Cinematography: Our industry has been severely affected by CV-19. Cinemas were closed since March to June and even though they were eventually opened, the screening rooms’ attendance was reduced to 50% or even 25% in CV-19 “red zones”. Many movies were moved to VOD platforms and big premieres were postponed. This have contributed to our significant loss.
IT Equipment: CV-19 only sped up our company’s transformations. Our structures on the EMEA level were closed. Locally – we had to lay a few people off.
Entertainment: Even though traditional sales channels slowed down, we observed a significant increase in online consumption.

Production: Our industry is stable, 2020 was actually one of the best years in history. Production plants have to keep working, so we had no problems with sustaining the flow.
FMCG: We are not developing, and financially we are in the negative. Many employees had to be laid off in the last months of 2020.

Building Materials: We haven’t experienced any visible changes so far, but the next year could bring some potential challenges.
Pharma: It’s been a very good time for our company, we’ve seen more sales and clients.
Publishing: As conferences, webinars and e-books are now more popular than ever, the center of business gravity has been moved online. This resulted in a decrease in physical distribution and, in consequence, lower turnover and lay-offs.
Media: Closed theaters and cinemas resulted in more interest in digital solutions. The sales model had to be changed.

Because of how we work when supporting our clients, we have a very unique “glimpse” into how over 5000 Executive Search companies and almost 20 000 decision makers react – the majority of which being located in Europe; and we collect and analyze how they respond; and we observe if and what kind of trends there are to leverage them into better career management & more effective job search methods.
Before there are trends, there are signals which we usually keep to ourselves. But these are not usual times, so we decided to share those market signals by the end of each week. If the country / context is important, we’ll add them. Otherwise, we’ll keep it general for confidentiality.
Collected Quotes from CEOs and HR Directors
The vast majority of executives are with market leaders in their respective industries. By default, the board members are members of local boards; if not, we’ll indicate the exception.
New Technology: Some of the start-ups in our industry need to restructure their business model in order to adapt to the current situation.
Manufacturing / Automotive: Our business results are down and we are making a considerable effort to keep staff and avoid reductions.
Design: The CV-19 has had a strong negative effect on our company. Many projects have been canceled and we are not sure what the future will bring. On the other hand, some projects have started to slowly unfreeze.
Production: We have definitely started to work more since the pandemic – sometimes we are forced to reply to emails with a two week delay because of our workload. Industry and construction branch have been well supported by the government actions, so fortunately we never had to cut the budget or freeze any projects.
Executive Search: Several international Executive Search companies have started to reduce their personnel across all countries. While some are currently doing really well.
And candidate quotes:
Business Unit Director / Real Estate: I received a job offer in strategy entertainment after a two month job searching process, but I stay open for other opportunities.
Finance: There are more people on the job market at the moment because of the second wave of CV-19 prognosis. The job market has therefore become more competitive.

E-commerce: The global workforce has been reduced by 40%.
Construction: We predict a slowdown in the next quarter.
IT: Our sales have dropped as the clients started to reduce their budgets – our support is no longer much-needed.
Healthcare: During an intense reorganization process in our company, apart from my day-to-day obligations, I was in charge of on-line recruitment. It’s been a very enriching experience from an employer’s point of view. I learned that finding engaged employees is a challenge.
Construction: The market has not been very friendly, but it’s not unstable either, although one can never be sure what’s coming. What worries me more is a global economic crisis and its consequences: unemployment and personal tragedies. But I can also see a slow but steady way out of this current apathetic situation.
Aviation: Our sector is very unstable and has suffered greatly.

We’ve continued reaching out to CEOs, HR Directors, investors, board members and candidates that we know personally, to take the temperature. Below you’ll find their shortened quotes in no particular order.
Retail: Due to the nature of our business, we cannot work remotely. We’ve introduced strict safety measures. Everybody is required to wear a mask. There are separate entrances and exits, we’re constantly monitoring the situation on the site. We’re required to react immediately if someone doesn’t adhere to the rules.
Banking: The restrictions affected our business massively. A lot of firms stopped operating or simply disappeared. We’ve also observed a big number of lay-offs.
Construction: Our clients aren’t realizing all the orders, deliveries of materials are limited, and the prices have gone up. Even though the official statistics aren’t too optimistic, all the restrictions and limiting are often a strategic decision, and not a direct consequence of the market situation – it is more profitable to do it this way.
Finance: We are doing terribly – this is the first time we’ve been affected this much.

The vast majority of executives are with market leaders in their respective industries. By default, the board members are members of local boards; if not, we’ll indicate the exception.
Chemical: We are still working from home and our workload has increased because of the current situation.
Telco / IT: We probably won’t make it – we lost many clients and that put us in a very difficult situation.
Manufacturing: COVID-19 caused a noticeable crisis, the company's poor financial performance in 2020 has reduced headcount to 20% of the levels from the beginning of the year.
Chemical: We produce sanitizing products so we are very busy.

A Quote from an HR Director
Insurance: Thanks to reaching a higher technological level we were able to become more efficient by shortening the duration of selected projects. We had a very good year in terms of reaching business goals. We reached higher employee satisfaction levels. We introduced a life harmony program (webinars on interesting spots in Poland, virtual yoga classes etc.). We take part in charity events, such as donating coffee, fruit, and vegetables to hospitals, orphanages, and shelters for single mothers.
We put a significant emphasis on strengthening our internal communications since 95% of our employees work remotely. This increased general motivation. We introduced weekly newsletters: information from the CEO, a series of articles about working from home – such as how to deal with time management, health and safety etc. Written communication has changed, e-mails are more concise and easier to understand. We also introduced a communicator which helps us complete tasks more efficiently.

Retail: There’s a lot of movement in our segment at the moment. Even though a big part of our consumers switched to online shopping, the stationary sales points are still working properly.
Production: The consumer goods industry has had good results and thanks to that we exceeded our goals for this year. The only problem is that we are unable to hire the people we need – it seems like there’s not many on the market.

Career Angels analyze the collected figures and complement the quantitative data with detailed and personal statements & insights of CEOs, HR Directors, investors, board members, candidates and headhunters that we know personally. We observe if and what kind of trends there are to leverage them into better candidate management & more effective job search methods.
These are not usual times, so we decided to share our market signals by the end of each week. If the country / context is important, we’ll add them. Otherwise, we’ll keep it general for confidentiality.

Collected Quotes from CEOs and HR Directors
The vast majority of executives are with market leaders in their respective industries. By default, the board members are members of local boards; if not, we’ll indicate the exception.
Market Research: We were heavily affected by the pandemic – we are in the red and come up short compared to other companies in our industry. Online projects are cheaper than regular ones, so we have to work more in order to reach the same results. Our clients from Telco and Finance industries have been carrying their research without interruption, but those from FMCG slowed down a bit and have only recently started to catch up.
Mechanical Engineering: Our business turned out to be resistant to CV-19 – except for service centers, where 20-30% of contracts with commercial clients were frozen. Unfortunately, all of our recruitment processes have been frozen since March as well.
IT Services: We sell advanced training platforms, so one might think that our business position was perfect for CV-19, and that there was an increased need for homeschooling and remote work solutions. Unfortunately, we were lacking a representative in the CEE region, which prevented us from making great profit. We couldn’t succeed without direct cooperation and establishing long-term relations.
Management Consulting / Sustainability: One of the sustainability projects that we were carrying out was frozen because all the companies withdrew. As their turnovers slowed down, the sustainability budgets were moved to different areas in order to save the businesses. Although a little short-handed, we will start the project again after summer.
Media: The cinema industry has been seriously affected. We couldn’t count on commercial revenues, as companies stopped advertising.

The vast majority of executives are with market leaders in their respective industries. By default, the board members are members of local boards; if not, we’ll indicate the exception.
Banking: Our current strategy is to keep our business alive rather than developing it.
Energy: We are suspecting some lay-offs.
Telecom / Manufacturing: Fortunately, we haven’t experienced any significant downtime, so we haven’t really suffered because of COVID-19.
Public Relations & Communications: A big broadcast media chain has decided to centralize the management and get rid of local GMs. Only operational decisions will be taken locally.
Computer Software: Our business is growing thanks to COVID-19. We have returned to the office but some of us are thinking about going back to HO in 50%.
Media Production: Many businesses from our capital group had to face severe consequences of the pandemic, especially from the cinema and advertising industry. When it comes to us, we decided quickly to move to remote work. It has partly remained like that to this day – we are currently combining working from the office and from home. Some of the teams have already decided to permanently implement a more flexible work mode.
Cosmetics Producer: Thanks to COVID-19, I learned that I can work from home and still be efficient. What works best in my opinion is a 50/50 solution: maintaining the relationships by working from the office and realizing projects from home.

The vast majority of executives are with market leaders in their respective industries. By default, the board members are members of local boards; if not, we’ll indicate the exception.
Healthcare: The next step – going back to the office. We’ve been working remotely for the past few months and it probably won’t change for those cases that don’t require face to face meetings.
Telcom: We have actually noted gains ever since the pandemic started.
Big4: Clients are hesitant to invest in business consulting as it’s costly and requires traveling, which is now limited. In consequence, it’s harder to reach our targets.
And candidate quotes:
Director / Insurance: I was laid off due to customer retention and difficulties in implementing the budget.
CFO / Retail: Thanks to contacting headhunters, I have recently been invited to 6 interviews in 2 weeks. Those recruitment processes have been unfrozen after a few months.

The art of interpreting signals (precursors of trends) is - and always has been - important in navigating financial markets and economies. Before there are trends, there are signals which we usually keep to ourselves. But these are not usual times, so we decided to share those market signals by the end of each week. If the country / context is important, we’ll add them. Otherwise, we’ll keep it general for confidentiality.

Collected Quotes from CEOs and HR Directors
The vast majority of executives are with market leaders in their respective industries. By default, the board members are members of local boards; if not, we’ll indicate the exception.

Collected Quotes from CEOs and HR Directors
The vast majority of executives are with market leaders in their respective industries. By default, the board members are members of local boards; if not, we’ll indicate the exception.

The vast majority of executives are with market leaders in their respective industries. By default, the board members are members of local boards; if not, we’ll indicate the exception.
IT: We weren’t directly in danger because of the pandemic, but were expecting some difficulties nonetheless. Our salaries were cut by 20% and we noted a two month sales decrease. It wasn’t a great loss – compared to last year, sales dropped only by a few percent.
Biotech: We were involved in building a start-up until March, when all activities had to be suspended.
And candidate quotes:
Global Executive Director / Software Market Leader / Asia: COVID-19 had affected the business in a very negative way. Face to face meetings are extremely important in Asia, but during the pandemic they could only be held through Skype, which prevented the finalization of many projects. I have seen that many recruitment processes were frozen, which made it impossible for me to move to another region.

Collected Quotes from CEOs and HR Directors
Tourism: The lockdowns and travel restrictions froze the business and meant we had to reimburse a lot of our regular customers, which is not something many of our competitors did.
Manufacturing: A smaller number of clients caused our profits to drop. I’m a COO, and a lot of my responsibilities were handed over to the CEO.
VC Fund: Due to CV-19, a portfolio company didn’t reach expected profits, and we had to withdraw from selling it. This meant that my scope of responsibilities wasn’t as justified as expected.
Tourism: We had to lay off many employees. In March of 2020, the number was higher than 200.

Do lutego 2021 r. liczba ta wzrosła do 19 milionów.

2. The type of clouds (cirrus, stratus, cumulus, nimbus), their size, location, direction and
speed of movement can give an indication as to what the weather has in store
over the coming two days: storm, sun, snow, ice or rain. In other words, dreamy, thin,
wispy clouds bring something different than fluffy, cotton wool style clouds.
The art of interpreting signals (precursors of trends) is - and always has been -
important in navigating financial markets and economies. If you are an
experienced manager or executive who wants to manage their career and/or job
search processes wisely, look at the signals of the job market which are
inseparably embedded in the VUCA landscape of today's world.
Check in on Saturday afternoons for the newest release on LinkedIn:

3. Because of how we work when supporting our clients, we have a very unique
“glimpse” into how over 5000 Executive Search companies and almost 20 000
decision makers react – the majority of them being located in Europe; and we
collect and analyze how they respond; and we observe if and what kind of
trends there are to leverage our clients into better career management &
more effective job search methods.
Before there are trends, there are signals which we usually keep to ourselves.
But these are not usual times, so we decided to share those signals by the end of
each week. If the country / context is important, we’ll add them. Otherwise, we’ll
keep it general for confidentiality.
Source of signals
4. Index18: This week, 4 countries published more job ads on LinkedIn than in Week 13 of
2020: Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia and Ukraine.
Index36: 60% of the countries published more job ads in Week 1 of 2021 than in Week
15 of 2020. Compared to the last week, it’s an increase of 16%.
Overview of the indices
The European Union:
In Week 2, the European
Union noted a -30.19%
decrease: 1,174,993 fewer job
ads were published than
in the initial Week 17 of 2020.
Since last week, it's a -7.26%
decrease.
5. Number of published job ads on LinkedIn
Weeks 13 (2020) to 2 (2021)
Note: some job ads might
have been taken off
LinkedIn, not because
the recruitment process was
put on hold or canceled,
but because they are costly,
especially if you have
dozens of them. A
company might have
wanted to simply cut costs
and move to more cost
effective alternatives. Some
local job portals are offering
substantial discounts. These
are the initial 18 countries
that we tracked.
6. Number of published job ads on LinkedIn
Week 15 (2020) vs Week 2 (2021) - extended to 36 countries
7. Number of published job ads on LinkedIn
Week 15 (2020) vs Week 2 (2021) - extended to 36 countries (part 2)
8. Selected quotes from CEOs & HR Directors
IT: During the first wave of reductions in the company, 1/3 of the team was laid off –
including me. The company is now frozen and will only start functioning again once the
market is more stable.
Education: At the beginning of 2020 I managed to escape China and come back to
Poland earlier than I planned. Thankfully, I found a job pretty quickly. Everything is
remote.
Retail/Pharma: What changed is our case are the challenges that we have to face.
¼ of my team was laid off and it’s been hard to make up for it.
Cosmetics: I am responsible for new business and innovations – since the pandemic
it’s been hard to present anything to the management board. The company has
focused more on disinfectants than on our regular products (cosmetics).
11. When it comes to regions, the winning
result of Week 2 belongs to Baltics: we
observed an increase of +81.69% since
Week 15. Country-wise, Bosnia &
Herzegovina is the winner with an
increase of +287.88%.

14. In Week 2, the worst result out of all the
regions was noted in Western Europe: a

Worst country result: France with a -21.22%
decrease.

18. Cover the basics: our ATS "enforces" as complete applications as possible. Having said that, it still
surprises me that approximately 30% of the candidates still don't get the absolute basics right!
Don't apply to everything. Constant rejection affects your motivation. Keep applying to the job
ads where you see a fit and don't give up!
Head of Talent Acquisition / International public organization
"Before CV-19, sometimes we'd have only 20 applicants for a post. Now, there's a massive increase. For
some roles it's double the amount of candidates – for HR roles, even more! A recent posting received
50 applicants within 12 hours! I can see that online interviews are more stressful for candidates
because of all the technical challenges. Consequently, their performance is different. The overall
candidate experience is also different – not worse, just different."
