Market Signals - where do they come from?
We started by monitoring the number of LinkedIn job ads in 18 European countries in Week 13 of 2020 (mid-March) – and extended our observations to ultimately 38 countries in Europe since Week 15. This allows us to measure a KPI that gives quite a good feel of the overall trend on the global job market.
Career Angels analyze the collected figures and complement the quantitative data with detailed and personal statements & insights of CEOs, HR Directors, investors, board members, candidates and headhunters that we know personally. We observe if and what kind of trends there are to leverage them into better candidate management & more effective job search methods.
These are not usual times, so we decided to share our market signals by the end of each week. If the country / context is important, we’ll add them. Otherwise, we’ll keep it general for confidentiality.

Collected Quotes from CEOs and HR Directors
The vast majority of executives are with market leaders in their respective industries. By default, the board members are members of local boards; if not, we’ll indicate the exception.
Technology: Our company is growing significantly. This year we have hired over 30 thousand employees all over the world.
Pharma: We haven’t noticed any effects of the pandemic. Goals have been reached, bonuses have been paid. Nothing has really changed at all – except for working from home.

Collected Quotes from CEOs and HR Directors
Banking: In order to create space for business development we decided to focus on the new technology sector – business services, IT and e-commerce.
Electronics: We closed 2020 with a record in sales despite COVID-19. Our turnover has increased by 140% in 4 years and we employ almost twice as many people as in 2016.
Logistics & Supply Chain: On a business note 2020 was surprisingly good. We exceeded our sales expectations in CEE, but also in countries like Spain or Italy. Our services (tracking supply chains) worked very well in industries like FMCG, pharma, e-commerce & logistics.
Banking: The bank I’m employed in was supposed to be sold, but the transaction was frozen because of the pandemic. However, it will probably happen in one or two years.

Healthcare: The next step – going back to the office. We’ve been working remotely for the past few months and it probably won’t change for those cases that don’t require face to face meetings.
Telcom: We have actually noted gains ever since the pandemic started.
Big4: Clients are hesitant to invest in business consulting as it’s costly and requires traveling, which is now limited. In consequence, it’s harder to reach our targets.
And candidate quotes:
Director / Insurance: I was laid off due to customer retention and difficulties in implementing the budget.
CFO / Retail: Thanks to contacting headhunters, I have recently been invited to 6 interviews in 2 weeks. Those recruitment processes have been unfrozen after a few months.

Because of how we work when supporting our clients, we have a very unique “glimpse” into how over 5000 Executive Search companies and almost 20 000 decision makers react – the majority of which being located in Europe; and we collect and analyze how they respond; and we observe if and what kind of trends there are to leverage them into better human resources and career management & more effective job search methods.

Collected Quotes from CEOs and HR Directors
The vast majority of executives are with market leaders in their respective industries. By default, the board members are members of local boards; if not, we’ll indicate the exception.
Chemical: We are still working from home and our workload has increased because of the current situation.
Telco / IT: We probably won’t make it – we lost many clients and that put us in a very difficult situation.
Manufacturing: COVID-19 caused a noticeable crisis, the company's poor financial performance in 2020 has reduced headcount to 20% of the levels from the beginning of the year.
Chemical: We produce sanitizing products so we are very busy.

Finance: Our salaries were cut in spring and are still lower than before the pandemic. We have also been working from home.
Home appliance / Technology: The construction and home appliance industries are doing really well.
Construction: At the moment, 90% of the companies in our industry have a full set of orders. For now we don’t really feel any impact of COVID-19, but I predict that the private sector will slow down a bit in about a year – there will be less investments in shopping centers and offices.

Collected Quotes from CEOs and HR Directors
The vast majority of executives are with market leaders in their respective industries. By default, the board members are members of local boards; if not, we’ll indicate the exception.

Construction: The number of clients is dramatically decreasing so the company is optimizing the salaries and investments.
Telco: We changed the strategy and merged product lines. Together with restructurization it caused lay offs.

The vast majority of executives are with market leaders in their respective industries. By default, the board members are members of local boards; if not, we’ll indicate the exception.
Production: At the beginning of the pandemic we were forced to lay some employees off due to clients freezing their investments. Already in May, however, everything started functioning again.
IT: Our industry is doing well, we’re definitely not complaining about our results.
Banking: Our company’s strategy was clear from the beginning, and at first the employees were working readily. After the holidays, the decision to change the strategy was made. That became an excuse for some employees to lower their productivity.

Retail: There’s a lot of movement in our segment at the moment. Even though a big part of our consumers switched to online shopping, the stationary sales points are still working properly.
Production: The consumer goods industry has had good results and thanks to that we exceeded our goals for this year. The only problem is that we are unable to hire the people we need – it seems like there’s not many on the market.

A Quote from an HR Director
Insurance: Thanks to reaching a higher technological level we were able to become more efficient by shortening the duration of selected projects. We had a very good year in terms of reaching business goals. We reached higher employee satisfaction levels. We introduced a life harmony program (webinars on interesting spots in Poland, virtual yoga classes etc.). We take part in charity events, such as donating coffee, fruit, and vegetables to hospitals, orphanages, and shelters for single mothers.
We put a significant emphasis on strengthening our internal communications since 95% of our employees work remotely. This increased general motivation. We introduced weekly newsletters: information from the CEO, a series of articles about working from home – such as how to deal with time management, health and safety etc. Written communication has changed, e-mails are more concise and easier to understand. We also introduced a communicator which helps us complete tasks more efficiently.

Collected Quotes from CEOs and HR Directors
Tourism: The lockdowns and travel restrictions froze the business and meant we had to reimburse a lot of our regular customers, which is not something many of our competitors did.
Manufacturing: A smaller number of clients caused our profits to drop. I’m a COO, and a lot of my responsibilities were handed over to the CEO.
VC Fund: Due to CV-19, a portfolio company didn’t reach expected profits, and we had to withdraw from selling it. This meant that my scope of responsibilities wasn’t as justified as expected.
Tourism: We had to lay off many employees. In March of 2020, the number was higher than 200.

Collected Quotes from CEOs and HR Directors
Health: Following a merger in 2020, which resulted in staff reductions, COVID slowed the business down considerably and halted expansion. Neither us, our competitors nor business partners are hiring. This means that people have to look for work outside their areas of expertise.
Logistics: The business suffered due to CV-19. We had to adapt to a new way of working, develop a new strategy. Luckily, the quality of work didn’t decrease.
Pharma: Overall, the pandemic hasn’t had a negative influence on the profits – our sales actually increased by 3% in 2020 compared to 2019. We did, however, have to lay off almost a third of our employees.

Building materials: Because of the fact that we didn’t have detailed data from 2019, it was hard to do a proper estimate of 2020. Fortunately, the restructurization allowed us to avoid lay-offs. We know that there were many in the industry.
Premium cosmetics: The pandemic had no influence on our business thanks to our stable e-commerce. We are safe.
Investment fund: 2020 was intense. After a brief storm in the spring we had to act quickly to adapt to the new reality. Our workload increased, especially during the fist wave of the pandemic. We had to work out new strategies and secure our sources of funding. The good side: the digitalization process stepped up and that was very beneficial.
Tourism: My 2020 looked like an MBA class in crisis management that I had to pass within a week.

Consulting: In terms of recruiting, we’re only now getting back on track. COVID caused huge delays, and some clients have backed out. In some cases, we’ve had to freeze recruitment processes and outsourcing projects up until the end of the year.
Pharma: We’re doing very well – the pandemic has caused us absolutely no problems.
IT: Before, we were realizing all of our projects remotely, but now we’ve started combining remote work with working at the office. We’ve only been working with projects that began last year – it’s hard to say what 2021 will bring.
Pharma: We’ve decided to start internal recruitment processes for higher positions. We want to dynamically transform the sales and marketing structures, in order to adapt to the changes brought by CV-19.

Collected Quotes from CEOs and HR Directors
Media: CV-19 has caused a bigger workload, I’ve been working overtime for a while now. Our team has grown bigger as well. It’s tough to manage a team when you haven’t ever met them in real life – that’s the biggest challenge.
Construction: Our business has been stable, but we do expect negative consequences with a delay in 2021.
Banking: The pandemic has influenced the way we organize our work. We have to rotate working from home and at the office. When someone tests positive, we have to close the entire branch for at least three weeks, which has a big impact on our goals.

Legal: My clients have started to form their budgets again and are changing the contract conditions so it’s not perfectly stable at the moment.
International consulting: Our sales have significantly dropped because of the international traffic restrictions.
Digital transformation: Finding clients online has become much harder than before. What’s more, we are looking for European and American suppliers, and because of the travel restrictions it’s not easy to cooperate. Apart from that, USA in mainly focused on the American companies, so our situation is difficult.
Investment fund: Many companies are being very cautious and have put their investments on hold. We can also see some political influence.
Finance: There have been some lay offs and reductions in our company, but it has more to do with the general situation of the group, not just our subsidiary.

The art of interpreting signals (precursors of trends) is - and always has been - important in navigating financial markets and economies. If you are an experienced manager or executive who wants to manage their career and/or job search processes wisely, look at the signals of the job market which are inseparably embedded in the VUCA landscape of today's world.
Before there are trends, there are signals which we usually keep to ourselves. But these are not usual times, so we decided to share those market signals by the end of each week.
Production: I am working only from home. We are digitizing our processes. A lot of projects have been suspended.
FMCG: Sales are not great, we have experienced big losses. There have been mass lay offs, many positions were eliminated.

Because of how we work when supporting our clients, we have a very unique “glimpse” into how over 5000 Executive Search companies and almost 20 000 decision makers react – the majority of which being located in Europe; and we collect and analyze how they respond; and we observe if and what kind of trends there are to leverage them into better career management & more effective job search methods.

Finance: We were forced to reduce the team by 20% in 8 countries and cut the budget for group level projects.
Industrial Engineering: Our recruitment processes were frozen. Also, we were forced to take leaves. Our marketing budget was reduced as well.
IT: There has been an increase of workload in the cyber security department, as well as in marketing. We managed to run a big online event for potential clients in April, as we didn’t want to wait for a more convenient time. It involved 600 people, which is about 400 more than normally.
Investment Management: Surprisingly, it was quite easy to shift to remote work, even though we couldn’t do it before, due to compliance issues.
Automotive: We were heavily affected by the restrictions – everything was frozen for 2 months. Even though we were able to continue the production, we couldn’t deliver the products as Italy is our main customer. Fortunately, we didn’t have to lay anyone off – we went through a restructuring process just before the pandemic.
Printing Business: Sales were temporarily down, but we are slowly back to business as usual.
Management Consulting: I usually have several projects, on-going and in the pipeline. All clients & consulting firms that I cooperate with have put their projects on hold until September at least. I've been proactively trying to obtain other assignments – so far, without success.

The vast majority of executives are with market leaders in their respective industries. By default, the board members are members of local boards; if not, we’ll indicate the exception.
Market Research: We were heavily affected by the pandemic – we are in the red and come up short compared to other companies in our industry. Online projects are cheaper than regular ones, so we have to work more in order to reach the same results. Our clients from Telco and Finance industries have been carrying their research without interruption, but those from FMCG slowed down a bit and have only recently started to catch up.
Mechanical Engineering: Our business turned out to be resistant to CV-19 – except for service centers, where 20-30% of contracts with commercial clients were frozen. Unfortunately, all of our recruitment processes have been frozen since March as well.
IT Services: We sell advanced training platforms, so one might think that our business position was perfect for CV-19, and that there was an increased need for homeschooling and remote work solutions. Unfortunately, we were lacking a representative in the CEE region, which prevented us from making great profit. We couldn’t succeed without direct cooperation and establishing long-term relations.
Management Consulting / Sustainability: One of the sustainability projects that we were carrying out was frozen because all the companies withdrew. As their turnovers slowed down, the sustainability budgets were moved to different areas in order to save the businesses. Although a little short-handed, we will start the project again after summer.
Media: The cinema industry has been seriously affected. We couldn’t count on commercial revenues, as companies stopped advertising.

The vast majority of executives are with market leaders in their respective industries. By default, the board members are members of local boards; if not, we’ll indicate the exception.
Production: The pandemic hasn’t really influenced our profits, although it has affected our investments – we had to postpone them.
IT: The company made a decision to reorganize – many positions were eliminated. Our projects were modified, which affected both our and our clients’ work. I personally had to lay off 50 people, as there was no point in keeping our office.
Retail: We’ve stopped visiting our clients personally, everything is remote. It’s going to stay like this – I actually work better from home.

Banking: We’ve seen a decrease in sales and our company has been looking for savings, so the restructuring processes have recently started.
Oil & Gas: Because of a significant drop in the oil price caused by CV-19, we’ve experienced a significant slowdown and our budgets had to be cut.
Telcom: E-commerce has definitely been positively affected by CV-19. Many companies have noticed new possibilities and diversified their sales channels – e-Commerce became a norm rather than just an option. Even though the interest in online shopping dropped immediately after the lock-down, company owners still expect the same results.
Public: The CV-19 situation showed that we were not really prepared to work on-line. Our on-boarding processes were almost frozen and our normal functioning blocked. This pushed us to open new communication channels on social media.
Media & Publishing: The first quarter was very good. The second one terrible. And we'll most probably hit our target for the third quarter – despite the summer break. Due to CV-19 we had to let go 100+ employees – every single team was affected to make sure we deliver on savings. Our conversations with clients re-focused from mid-to-long term projects to short-term wins.

Do lutego 2021 r. liczba ta wzrosła do 19 milionów.

wispy clouds bring something different than fluffy, cotton wool style clouds.

5. Number of published job ads on LinkedIn
Week 13 (2020) to Week 33 (2021)
Note: some job ads might
have been taken off
LinkedIn, not because
the recruitment process was
put on hold or canceled,
but because they are costly,
especially if you have
dozens of them. A
company might have
wanted to simply cut costs
and move to more cost
effective alternatives. Some
local job portals are offering
substantial discounts. These
are the initial 18 countries
that we tracked.

17. Cover the basics: our ATS "enforces" as complete applications as possible. Having said that, it still
surprises me that approximately 30% of the candidates still don't get the absolute basics right!
Don't apply to everything. Constant rejection affects your motivation. Keep applying to the job
ads where you see a fit and don't give up!
Head of Talent Acquisition / International public organization
"Before CV-19, sometimes we'd have only 20 applicants for a post. Now, there's a massive increase. For
some roles it's double the amount of candidates – for HR roles, even more! A recent posting received
50 applicants within 12 hours! I can see that online interviews are more stressful for candidates
because of all the technical challenges. Consequently, their performance is different. The overall
candidate experience is also different – not worse, just different."
