Marie Curie discovered the radioactive element radium in 1898 while experimenting with pitchblende ore. She was interested in studying radiation after it was discovered in 1896 by Becquerel. Curie discovered that pitchblende, a uranium ore, also contained radium. Her discovery of radium was initially met with skepticism by male scientists due to the sexism of the time and because she was a female scientist.
