This document discusses how a veteran special education teacher, Leiah Craun, helped advance a struggling third grade student named Kasia Dale by two years in one semester through the use of comprehensive literacy interventions. The Marshalltown school district provides teachers with professional development on four literacy interventions developed by Linda Dorn and Carla Soffos. While the interventions are important, the biggest factor in a student's success is having a teacher like Mrs. Craun who is highly responsive and implements the interventions with fidelity. The interventions have helped transform not only Kasia's academic performance, but also her mother Sandy Dale's approach as a special education teacher.
