This document summarizes Marc Yeats' busy year of 2013, which included over 20 world premieres of his compositions across three months. Some of the highlights included the premieres of 'black bile' performed by Thumb Ensemble in January, 'quarter-sounds' for bass clarinet in March, and 'hȳran' for solo viola and 'pathos' for solo cello in performances in London and at the Antara Festival. His works were performed across Europe and Asia and he had new commissions from various ensembles that will continue to be premiered and recorded throughout 2014.
When we think to the word “printing” or “print” in general, what comes in mind? How important is printing in our life? Does it effect practically everything that we do on a day to day basis?
I believe that it does, regardless of our profession in life! Weather we are reading notes on a piece of music from Vivaldi’s Gloria or reading at the menu at the restaurant!
Words.
We use them every day. We do this quite naturally to greater or lesser communicative effect.
As a composer I am engaged in forging an abstract language in sound that frequently uses no words to imply its meanings and emotional context. This inherent ‘meaning’, (and I use the word loosely), is in no way fixed as each person who listens to the music brings their own interpretation of meaning to the outpouring of sounds. Composers can use titles or culturally understood imagery to ‘paint a picture’ in sound of certain objects and feelings; for instance, music to conjure an impression of the sea or pastoral music to imply certain types of landscape. However, if like me, the composer writes abstract, atonal music, these cultural ‘hooks’ no longer apply as the language, syntax and dialectic used is very personal and perhaps does not conform to historical or cultural precedents and norms.

REACH Dorset
As practising artists - Rosie as a writer, Marc as a painter and composer - we were excited about working together on a project which would let us convey our passion and conviction about the transforming power of creativity. Between April and October 2009, we ran small weekly groups at Bridport Arts Centre, Dorset, devising exercises and activities to trigger the imagination and encourage new ideas and skills. We wanted to create a safe environment where people could experiment and explore with words and images in ways they had not done before, using the natural world as a stimulus and subject matter, sometimes involving walks to woods and on the coast.
Our main purpose was to catalyse inner change, to enable everyone to take hold of his or her own creativity in a positive way. Since this process was more important than results, we encouraged practices to loosen and inspire, such as associative writing or drawing with the eyes closed. And we were delighted so many participants described their experiences as liberating and affirming, freeing them from conventional expectations and inner critics and letting them view their lives from new angles and perspectives. Sharing work, talking and relating together also built self-acceptance, confidence and trust. We later progressed to more sustained pieces, including a personal `tree of life' design.
The outcome of this has been art and writing of remarkable quality, some of which we are presenting in this volume. Poems, prose fragments, pencil and charcoal sketches, paintings, photographs, stained glass, 3-D, textile and paper work, all evidence of the remarkable inventiveness latent within everyone. And between the lines, making them all the more valuable to us, are the moving personal stories, the compassion and humour we also shared together. Indeed, the fact that all this work was done in the midst of people's struggles with huge inner and outer challenges - stress, depression, bereavement, anxiety, panic, job loss, ill-health - confirms our belief not only in the power of art but in its sheer necessity on our human journey.
All the work is reproduced anonymously, but with the artists' permission.
REACH Dorset developed from an initial partnership between Bridport Arts Centre and Bridport Medical Centre that was brought about by Alex Coulter and the regional REACH initiative. We are deeply grateful to them and to Arts Council England South West, Dorset Primary Care Trust, Dorset Mental Health Forum and all the course participants who made REACH Dorset possible. The original project groups are now continuing their creative journeys independently, successfully demonstrating a sustainable legacy for REACH Dorset. We hope this volume will help foster more projects of this kind inspiring REACH Dorset members and others to continue working creatively as a major step towards well-being.

Rosie Jackson & Marc Yeats
Born in 1962, an only child, brought up in London, attended a Roman Catholic school, had traumatic treatment at the hands of his father, losing his mother to cancer in 1977, when he were just 15, by which time he’d already commenced serious painting sold through private galleries, moved to Devon with his volatile father, ran a confectionary shop, experienced bankruptcy, yet all the while yearning to creatively express himself.
Instead of the expectations of his teachers for a highly gifted student to embark on a professional career in the arts, palaeontology or veterinary medicine, profound setbacks and circumstances blighted his academic advance: instead he mopped hospital floors but went on to qualify as a registered nurse for people with learning disabilities. After marrying at 21 to his wife in Devon, they both moved from Southampton to the opposite end of the UK, the Isle of Skye to give free reign to his creative vitality and verve.

Under
the
auspices
of
their
new
iniXaXve,
CreaXve
Music
Composer
ConXnuum
(CMCC),
the
CHICAGO
MODERN
ORCHESTRA
PROJECT
has
asked
composer
Marc
Yeats
for
a
new
composiXon
for
their
2014-‐15
season.
The
new
commission
will
see
Marc
conCnuing
his
composiConal
research
around
unsynchronised
performance
and
composiConal
techniques,
culminaCng
in
a
substanCal
work
for
brass
ensemble,
percussion
and
strings
[with
opConal
piano]
that
will
push
Marc's
unsynchronised
composiCons
into
the
orchestral
sphere
for
the
first
Cme.
The
work
will
be
directed
but
only
to
iniCate
sounds
and
instrumental
groupings.
All
performers
will
play
'as
soloists',
following
their
own
fully
notated
parts
which
shall
contain
different
tempi,
bar
structures
and
material,
simultaneously
performed
[unsynchornised]
across
the
orchestra
without
a
unifying
beat
from
the
director.
Each
performer
will
play
'live
and
[to
a
certain
extent]
free'.
Due
to
the
composiConal
nature
of
the
music,
each
performance
will
yield
slightly
different
results,
interplays,
gestural
and
harmonic
references
and
unique
outcomes
creaCng
music
of
great
fluidity,
unpredictability,
beauty,
complexity,
wild
energy
and
connecCvity.
This
music
cannot
be
read
from
a
convenConal
score;
it
renews
itself
with
each
performance
and
can
only
be
'revealed'
when
played
live.
There
are
many
more
projects
in
the
pipeline
for
2014
and
beyond
which
Marc
will
announce
once
confirmed.
