REACH Dorset
As practising artists - Rosie as a writer, Marc as a painter and composer - we were excited about working together on a project which would let us convey our passion and conviction about the transforming power of creativity. Between April and October 2009, we ran small weekly groups at Bridport Arts Centre, Dorset, devising exercises and activities to trigger the imagination and encourage new ideas and skills. We wanted to create a safe environment where people could experiment and explore with words and images in ways they had not done before, using the natural world as a stimulus and subject matter, sometimes involving walks to woods and on the coast.
Our main purpose was to catalyse inner change, to enable everyone to take hold of his or her own creativity in a positive way. Since this process was more important than results, we encouraged practices to loosen and inspire, such as associative writing or drawing with the eyes closed. And we were delighted so many participants described their experiences as liberating and affirming, freeing them from conventional expectations and inner critics and letting them view their lives from new angles and perspectives. Sharing work, talking and relating together also built self-acceptance, confidence and trust. We later progressed to more sustained pieces, including a personal `tree of life' design.
The outcome of this has been art and writing of remarkable quality, some of which we are presenting in this volume. Poems, prose fragments, pencil and charcoal sketches, paintings, photographs, stained glass, 3-D, textile and paper work, all evidence of the remarkable inventiveness latent within everyone. And between the lines, making them all the more valuable to us, are the moving personal stories, the compassion and humour we also shared together. Indeed, the fact that all this work was done in the midst of people's struggles with huge inner and outer challenges - stress, depression, bereavement, anxiety, panic, job loss, ill-health - confirms our belief not only in the power of art but in its sheer necessity on our human journey.
All the work is reproduced anonymously, but with the artists' permission.
REACH Dorset developed from an initial partnership between Bridport Arts Centre and Bridport Medical Centre that was brought about by Alex Coulter and the regional REACH initiative. We are deeply grateful to them and to Arts Council England South West, Dorset Primary Care Trust, Dorset Mental Health Forum and all the course participants who made REACH Dorset possible. The original project groups are now continuing their creative journeys independently, successfully demonstrating a sustainable legacy for REACH Dorset. We hope this volume will help foster more projects of this kind inspiring REACH Dorset members and others to continue working creatively as a major step towards well-being.

This document provides relaxation scripts to help individuals with autism spectrum disorders relax and reduce stress and anxiety. It was prepared by The TAP Service Center at The Hope Institute for Children and Families and contains scripts focused on deep breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, visualization, and meditation to promote calm.
This document provides tips for addressing specific toilet training problems that may occur with children on the autism spectrum. It lists several common issues such as resisting sitting on the toilet, being afraid of flushing, overly interested in flushing, playing in the water, playing with toilet paper, resisting being cleaned, having bad aim, and retaining when the diaper is removed. For each problem, it provides multiple strategies to try, such as using visual cues, changing materials, adding distractions, and cutting diapers gradually. The overall goal is to make the toilet training process more comfortable and successful for children with autism.
Preparation, commitment, and consistency are key to successful toilet training. Create a baseline chart and picture schedule of the routine. Choose a consistent word for using the bathroom. Reward dryness and going to the bathroom, but not accidents. Gradually increase time between bathroom trips and work on independence with prompts. Bowel training requires regularity and relaxation.
This document describes a 5-point voice scale to help children with autism spectrum disorders understand appropriate voice volumes for different situations. A level 5 voice is very loud for emergencies only, while a level 1 voice means being silent. The scale provides examples of when to use each voice level, from loud outdoor play (level 4) to quiet whispering (level 2) to silent listening (level 1). Teachers can point to the numbered scale to remind students of the appropriate voice level.
This document provides tips for using social stories to help children with autism spectrum disorders understand social situations and expectations. Social stories are brief descriptive stories that explain social cues, activities, and rules in concrete terms. They should be written from the child's perspective and include descriptive, perspective, and directive sentences. When using social stories, they should be read to the child in a calm setting and the desired behavior should be modeled. The stories can then be read just before relevant social situations.
Giving children choices allows them to feel in control and more willing to cooperate. Offering limited choices of two options provides structure while allowing decision making practice. When presenting choices, discuss potential outcomes but do not interfere with the natural consequences of their decision. Using choices helps children learn to make their own decisions from a young age for small choices and builds skills for more important life choices.
The Incredible 5-Point Scale is a strategy that involves rating behaviors on a visual scale to help children understand and manage their own feelings and behavior. It breaks behaviors down into concrete levels from 1 to 5. Implementing the scale involves choosing a target behavior, defining the levels, developing a story or visual, introducing the scale to the child, and practicing rating behaviors. The scale provides a non-judgmental way for children, parents, and caregivers to communicate about behavior regulation and reduce power struggles.
This document provides tips for using "magic statements" to prevent, minimize, or de-escalate conflicts with children who have autism spectrum disorders. The magic statements give simple, practical language responses for situations like withdrawing a positive consequence, interrupting disruptive behavior, validating a child's desires when saying no, declining inappropriate suggestions, transferring responsibility to find solutions, affirming agreements, and disengaging from heated discussions. Examples of magic statements include "We'll try again later", "This isn't working", and "Can you think of a solution that will work for both of us?".

About The Hope Institute Learning Academy Enrollment Process
WHAT ARE THE QUALIFICATIONS FOR MY CHILD TO BE ENROLLED AT THE HOPE INSTITUTE
LEARNING ACADEMY?
The Hope Institute Learning Academy is a non-selective school. This means that grades and test scores
are not evaluated prior to admission. The Hope Institute Learning Academy does not require that students
have a minimum grade point average or test score. The only requirement is that your family lives in
Chicago.
WHEN DOES OPEN ENROLLMENT BEGIN?
Open enrollment begins on November 1, 2010 and is closed on August 31, 2011.
HOW DO I OBTAIN AN APPLICATION?
Parents interested in applying to The Hope Institute Learning Academy can obtain an application by
calling The Hope Institute Learning Academy at 773-534-7405 to request that an application be mailed or
faxed to their desired location. Applications are also available online at
http://www.hopeinstitutelearningacademy.org. Please note: The completed online application with
additional documentation must be submitted to 1628 W. Washington, Chicago, IL 60612.
HOW DOES THE HOPE INSTITUTE LEARNING ACADEMY ADMIT STUDENTS?
The Hope Institute Learning Academy manages the admission process for its campus. All students are
admitted through a lottery process. Students are not admitted on a first come first served basis. In order
for your child to be included in The Hope Institute Learning Academy lottery, the parent must submit a
complete application to The Hope Institute Learning Academy by the lottery deadline printed on the
application. Due to its focus on responsible inclusion, The Hope Institute Learning Academy uses a two-
tier lottery to maintain its enrollment in compliance with federal guidelines and mandates and with the
Corey H. Consent Decree. As such, students who have an IEP are randomly selected during one lottery
for the available seats for students with IEPs. Only students with IEPs are included in this lottery.
Students who do not have IEPs are selected through a second lottery for non-IEP seats. Only students
without IEPs will be included in this second lottery. During both lotteries, students are randomly selected
to fill the seats available at for each grade. If a child’s name is picked during the lottery that child will be
accepted. Children who are not accepted during the lottery are placed on a waiting list by date
application was received.
WHEN WILL I RECEIVE NOTIFICATION OF WHETHER OR NOT MY CHILD WAS ACCEPTED?
The results of the lottery are mailed to all parents the day following the lottery. The lottery takes place in
April for elementary students.
I RECEIVED A LETTER THAT MY CHILD IS ON THE WAITING LIST. WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?
That letter explains that your child was not accepted through the lottery and was placed on a waiting list.
If seats become available at The Hope Institute Learning Academy during the enrollment period, The
Hope Institute Learning Academy will admit students off of the waiting list, in numerical order, to fill the
available vacancies. Parents will be notified of the student’s acceptance either by phone or mail.
HOW LONG WILL MY CHILD BE ON THE WAITING LIST?
The waiting list becomes active on the date of the lottery and expires on August 31, 2011.

MY CHILD WAS NOT ACCEPTED FROM THE WAITING LIST. DO I HAVE TO REAPPLY OR DOES
THE WAITING LIST CARRY OVER TO THE NEXT YEAR
You would have to reapply as the waiting list expires on August 31, 201 and does not carry over.
I HAVE MORE THAN ONE CHILD. DO I HAVE TO COMPLETE AN APPLICATION FOR EACH
CHILD?
Yes. A completed application and the additional documentation requested must be submitted to The
Hope Institute Learning Academy for each child.
I HAVE MORE THAN ONE CHILD WHO IS APPLYING TO ATTEND THE HOPE INSTITUTE
LEARNING ACADEMY. BEING THAT YOU ADMIT BY LOTTERY, WHAT HAPPENS IF ONLY ONE
CHILD IS ACCEPTED?
Due to the random nature of a lottery, it is possible that only one child will be accepted and the other
sibling will be placed on the waiting list. The Hope Institute Learning Academy understands that this is a
problem for parents. In an attempt to alleviate the problem we will utilize a sibling preference policy
beginning in the 2010-2011 school year. An applicant is given sibling preference when they have a
brother or sister who is currently enrolled or are accepted for enrollment at The Hope Institute Learning
Academy. If there are vacancies for the grade that the prospective student is applying for, siblings will be
accepted before non-sibling prospective students to fill the available seats.
I RECEIVED MY APPLICATION BACK IN THE MAIL WITH A LETTER THAT STATED I DID NOT
SUBMIT EVERYTHING. WHAT SHOULD I DO?
At the top of the application there is a list of all of the documents required. Applications submitted without
those documents are considered incomplete and returned. Simply, make copies of the documents that
you were missing and send everything back to The Hope Institute Learning Academy’s office before the
application deadline.
I MISSED THE APPLICATION DEADLINE CAN I STILL SUBMIT AN APPLICATION FOR MY CHILD?
Yes, however your child will be placed on the waiting list in the order that we received the application. If
there are vacancies at The Hope Institute Learning Academy during the enrollment period, The Hope
Institute Learning Academy will admit students off of the waiting list to fill the available seats. The Hope
Institute Learning Academy will admit the students in numerical order. Parents would be notified of the
child’s acceptance either by phone or by mail of their child’s acceptance.
CAN I DOWNLOAD AN APPLICATION ONLINE?
Yes. The application is available on our web site at www.hopeinstitutelearningacademy.org. Please note:
Additional documentation must be mailed to The Hope Institute Learning Academy, 1628 W. Washington,
Chicago, IL 60612 to complete your application.
