During adolescence, you suffer emotional ups and
downs. This is expected, but other teenagers
simply are not able to cope with them.
More than normal mood swings, some
adolescents face real problems while growing up
and give in to life’s pressures.
It is interesting to note, however, that mental
health is not only the absence of problems in the
mind but also a state of mind where you grow
happy, content and fully enjoy the life of a
teenager.
MENTAL HEALTH
1.Mental health is about how we think, feel and behave.
It is estimated that four in four people have a mental
health problem at some point, which can affect their
daily life, relationships or physical health.
2.Mental health problems can affect anyone. Without
support and treatment, mental health problems can
have a serious effect on the individual and those
around them
STRESS
• Growing up through adolescence, teenagers
encounter many challenges. These demands
add burden to your mind and body. Stress is
the reaction of the body to these challenges or
stressors. Unlike what we think of, stress is not
all bad. When stressed, the mind and body go
into ‘fight or flight’ mode.
UNDERSTANDING STRESS
Stress can be classified into two:
eustress and distress. Eustress or
Good stress is beneficial, while
distress or bad stress is not.
☺EUSTRESS ☹DISTRESS
Eustress refers to a positive
response one has to a stressor,
which can depend on one's current
feelings of control, desirability,
location, and timing of the stressor.
Potential indicators of eustress
may include responding to a
stressor with a sense of or positive

COMMON STRESSORS AFFECTING ADOLESCENTS
Teenagers, like adults, experience stress every
day. The sources of stress are varied and
changing. Most teens experience stress when
they perceive a situation as dangerous, difficult
or painful, and they do not have the resources to
cope.
Some Sources Of Stress For Teens Include:
• Ongoing family conflict
• School demands
• Negative thoughts and feelings about themselves
• Problems with friends
• Unsafe living environments
• Separation or divorce of parents
• Chronic illness or death of a loved one
• Moving or changing schools
• Taking on too many activities or having too high
expectation
