Engaging the Community with Digital Archaeology at the Old Church of St. Nich...
Wessex Archaeology was commissioned by the Churches Conservation Trust to undertake a community project at the Old Church of St. Nicholas, Uphill during Heritage Open Days. Whilst the CCT were interested in the results of the archaeological work, the primary aim of the project was to use the work to enthuse the community about this seldom open heritage asset. It was hoped that as a result volunteers would be found to help keep the church regularly open to visitors.
The project made use of a combination of laser scanning, metric survey, excavation, RTI and geophysics to investigate the church and graveyard. This integrated approach to site investigation helped draw large numbers of visitors to the site and allowed them to learn about the practice of modern archaeology.
With engaging the community a priority people were encouraged to help conduct the archaeological work where possible. Volunteers were trained in archaeological survey and excavation techniques and given explanations of how the equipment they were using worked.
The project was carried out in such a way that provisional results could be viewed on site to maximise engagement. Raw scans were shown on the instrument as the laser scanning progressed, the graveyard was surveyed straight to CAD on a tablet PC, and Reflectance Transformation Imaging was processed on site. This allowed volunteers to see the product of their work straight away. A selection of the project work was exhibited on the final open day including the processed laser scan survey of the exterior of the church.
This project brought new knowledge about the Old Church of St. Nicholas to the community and allowed individuals from that community to share their knowledge with others. The multi-disciplinary approach to this project drew large numbers of people to the church and many were excited by the potential of the digital practices of modern archaeology, however traditional approaches still hold a great appeal.
This paper will discuss the successes and challenges of the project, the benefits that the use of technology brought to it, and some of the findings of the work carried out.
Your Paintings Tagger - MCN 2013
The document discusses the BBC Your Paintings project, which provides an online database of over 200,000 UK paintings from 48,833 artists and 2,668 collections. The National Library of Wales has developed a large number of digital resources (including newspapers, archives, manuscripts and photographs) that are freely available as a national digital public library for Wales. Development of this material has involved research and innovation in all aspects of the digital life cycle, and development of an underlying digital infrastructure, to support the creation of open and sustainable digital collections that can be used, and re-used, by the widest range of stakeholders. Central to this has been the development of digital content in collaboration with national and international partners. This presentation will discuss this national context for Cynefin, a recent project developed in collaboration with the Archives and Records Council Wales (ARCW) and funded by the UK’s Heritage Lottery Fund. The project will digitize over a thousand tithe maps covering 95% of Wales between the period 1838 and 1947. The project has explored new approaches to crowd sourcing to geo locate the tithe maps and transcribe related apportionments, and also to develop links between content in the collections, linking location, ownership, land use and value. The project has also had to find innovative ways to digitize large tithe maps, including the use of an automated tripod head originally developed to capture panoramic landscapes and the construction of a specifically designed wall to ensure a consistent horizontal distance from the camera. The digital images have been ingested into a Fedora repository and shared using the IIIF standard. The crowd-sourcing element will be released to the public at the beginning of November 2014 and the initial results of the uptake and engagement of volunteers will be discussed in the presentation. The digital preservation of the tithe maps, apportionments and the crowd-sourced data will present future challenges, and approaches to these issues will also be discussed. This project is a potential model for other institutions to leverage the resources of the crowd to produce a useful and enduring digital humanities resource.

The National Library of Wales has been using IIIF for 2.5 years to provide access to digitized maps, newspapers, photographs, and manuscripts. It has implemented IIIF to allow interoperable viewing without transferring images or losing control. Over 1.1 million newspaper images and 200,000 manifests are now available through IIIF-compliant viewers. The library is also using IIIF for a transcription project and developing tools to support annotation and multilingual access.

The Royal Pavilion in Brighton served as a military hospital for Indian soldiers during World War 1. This provided an opportunity to promote a vision of the British Empire to audiences in Britain and India. The hospital was portrayed as a place of royal benevolence where Indian soldiers received excellent care, helping to justify and legitimize continued British rule in India during a vulnerable time. This is the presentation of my PhD thesis: Designing for Participation within cultural heritage. Participatory practices and audience engagement in heritage experiences proscess.
The research investigates the emerging role of cultural institutions that, responding to the expectations of contemporary audiences, are shifting from being providers of content, to being facilitators of experiences around it. The overall aim is to envision novel paradigms for audience engagement within cultural institutions, outlining a general framework for the design of effective participatory experiences of heritage.

The art of work in the age of ??? reproduction
The British Library holds over 180-200 million items in its collection, including manuscripts, maps, newspapers, and other materials. Only about 1-2% of the collection has been digitized so far due to the challenges of scale, including the resources needed for imaging, cataloging, and dealing with copyright issues for such a vast collection. The library is addressing these challenges through various digitization efforts and tools that make collections available online, as well as training programs to empower staff in digital scholarship methods and innovations. The goal is for the library to support new ways of exploring and accessing collections through open access digital resources and collaborations.

The art of work in the age of ??? reproduction
The British Library holds over 180-200 million items in its collection, including manuscripts, maps, newspapers, and other materials. Only about 1-2% of the collection has been digitized so far due to the challenges of scale, including the resources needed for imaging, cataloging, and dealing with copyright issues for such a vast collection. The library is addressing these challenges through various digitization efforts and tools that make collections available online, as well as training programs to empower staff in digital scholarship methods and innovations. The goal is for the library to support new ways of exploring and accessing collections through open access digital resources and collaborations.

This document discusses how the Royal Albert Memorial Museum created two mobile-friendly websites called Moor Stories and Church Detective to tell stories and share local history from Dartmoor, a region in England known for having poor cell phone signal. Wessex Archaeology was commissioned by the Churches Conservation Trust to undertake a community project at the Old Church of St. Nicholas, Uphill during Heritage Open Days. Whilst the CCT were interested in the results of the archaeological work, the primary aim of the project was to use the work to enthuse the community about this seldom open heritage asset. It was hoped that as a result volunteers would be found to help keep the church regularly open to visitors.
The project made use of a combination of laser scanning, metric survey, excavation, RTI and geophysics to investigate the church and graveyard. This integrated approach to site investigation helped draw large numbers of visitors to the site and allowed them to learn about the practice of modern archaeology.
With engaging the community a priority people were encouraged to help conduct the archaeological work where possible. Volunteers were trained in archaeological survey and excavation techniques and given explanations of how the equipment they were using worked.
The project was carried out in such a way that provisional results could be viewed on site to maximise engagement. Raw scans were shown on the instrument as the laser scanning progressed, the graveyard was surveyed straight to CAD on a tablet PC, and Reflectance Transformation Imaging was processed on site. This allowed volunteers to see the product of their work straight away. A selection of the project work was exhibited on the final open day including the processed laser scan survey of the exterior of the church.
This project brought new knowledge about the Old Church of St. Nicholas to the community and allowed individuals from that community to share their knowledge with others. The multi-disciplinary approach to this project drew large numbers of people to the church and many were excited by the potential of the digital practices of modern archaeology, however traditional approaches still hold a great appeal.
This paper will discuss the successes and challenges of the project, the benefits that the use of technology brought to it, and some of the findings of the work carried out.
3D reconstructions for story telling and understanding
This slidedeck was prepared for a webinar exploring some of the ways that 3D reconstructions are being used for story telling and to aid understanding. Following an introduction to the webinar Daniel Pletinckx of Visual Dimension bvma gave a presentation on 'Interactive storytelling in virtual worlds' which is followed by a presentation by Catherine Cassidy of the Open Virtual Worlds group at the University of St Andrews on 'Dissemination Methods for 3D Historical Virtual Environments'.
One Collection – Escaping the Labyrinth

The Science Museum is moving its world-class science, technology and medicine collection from Blythe House to a new custom-built collections facility in Wiltshire. The move requires us to complete a full inventory, barcode, pack and move all 320,000 objects in the collection whilst working in the labyrinth of rooms in a Victorian building. The eclectic collection, ranging from scientific instruments, pottery, chemicals, technology objects, antiquaries and ethnography material throws up many challenges of dealing with a heterogeneous collection and hazardous materials. In order to succeed we are completely overhauling current working practices; designing new efficient workflows, improving existing systems, enhancing data and using barcoding technology.

Public Domain Day in Belgium celebrated works that entered the public domain in 2023. Several institutions showcased how they uploaded public domain collections in 2022 and 2023, including the Passchendaele Museum which shared experiences from an upload workshop and the Agentschap Onroerend Erfgoed which highlighted architectural drawings. Other showcases were from the KBR on their Public Domain Day uploads and Europeana's findings from five years of their Open GLAM survey on sharing cultural heritage collections. The event advocated for better sharing of cultural heritage in the public domain.

Recording public archaeological discovery
The document discusses the Portable Antiquities Scheme (PAS), which records archaeological objects found by the public in England and Wales. It notes that over 449,359 objects have been recorded online in the PAS database over the past 7 years. It also describes ongoing research projects, a new database built in-house, and new functions that pull and link data from other sources to enhance the PAS records. Loch Leven Living Lab
The Loch Leven Living Lab aims to use digital technology and environmental monitoring to enhance the visitor experience and engagement with the Loch Leven ecosystem while supporting sustainable tourism growth. This would be done through developing interactive education content, augmented reality experiences, and open data science. Over 150 years of data on the site's ecology and 50 years of structured research could be organized and published on an open platform. Doing so may attract stakeholders interested in monitoring air/water quality, emissions, and more. Initial plans involve building a fiber and wireless broadband network to support these goals.

Power Grid Model
The global energy transition is placing new and unprecedented demands on Distribution System Operators (DSOs). Alongside upgrades to grid capacity, processes such as digitization, capacity optimization, and congestion management are becoming vital for delivering reliable services.
Power Grid Model is an open source project from Linux Foundation Energy and provides a calculation engine that is increasingly essential for DSOs. It offers a standards-based foundation enabling real-time power systems analysis, simulations of electrical power grids, and sophisticated what-if analysis. In addition, it enables in-depth studies and analysis of the electrical power grid’s behavior and performance. This comprehensive model incorporates essential factors such as power generation capacity, electrical losses, voltage levels, power flows, and system stability.
Power Grid Model is currently being applied in a wide variety of use cases, including grid planning, expansion, reliability, and congestion studies. It can also help in analyzing the impact of renewable energy integration, assessing the effects of disturbances or faults, and developing strategies for grid control and optimization.
