TASO offers free safe male circumcision (SMC) as part of combination prevention against HIV, including screening and treatment of STIs, condoms, counseling, and education. SMC involves removing the foreskin from a man's penis in a sterile environment by a trained worker, taking 25-35 minutes, after which the man can walk from the operating room. TASO has circumcised over 18,000 men out of a target of over 38,000 through either static clinics or mobile "camping" models. Studies show SMC reduces the risk of acquiring HIV by 60% when combined with other prevention strategies like abstinence and faithfulness.

2. SMC is a surgical procedure that involves the permanent removal of the foreskin from a man’s penis. This is done in a clean, sterile and safe environment by a trained medical worker, with the procedure lasting 25 to 35 minutes enabling the circumcised man to walk free from the operating room.

WOMEN
SMC in TASO is provided through 2 models, static model and camping or roving model. In the static model, SMC is provided within the vicinity of the TASO centers while the camping model involves roving from one place to another following the demand of SMC.
The service is free of charge at TASO and it is provided as a package including screening and treatment of STIs, provision of condoms, counseling and health education.
Studies from clinical trials have shown that circumcision protects an HIV negative man from acquiring HIV by 60%. This therefore means that SMC is to be used in combination with other strategies like ABC, and not to be seen as a vaccine against HIV for men.
Other benefits of circumcision include protection from other sexually transmitted infections, cancer of the penis and general hygiene which reduces chances of getting Urinary Tract Infections.
Safe Male Circumcision is also beneficial to women through prevention of transmission of the Human Papillomavirus (virus that causes cancer of the cervix to women). A circumcised man in essence protects his spouse from getting cancer of the cervix only when the man and woman are in a monogamous relationship without multiple sexual partners.
