3. Thatta’s ‘City of the Dead’ is home to an estimated half a million to a million graves,
with some claiming it is the largest cemetery in the world. Spread over an area of a
little more than 10 square miles, the graveyard houses graves from the 14th to the
18th centuries. Makli (literally “little Makkah,” as christened by an ecstatic Hajj
pilgrim) was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1981 as an "outstanding
testament" to Sindhi civilization between the 14th and 18th centuries.
Owing to its archaeological diversity, both in time and space, the site holds special
interest. The buildings have been divided into three time periods, according to the
different periods of reign.
one of the largest funerary sites in the world, spread over an area of 10 kilometres
near the city of Thatta, in the Pakistani province of Sindh. The site houses
approximately 500,000 to 1 million[1] tombs built over the course of a 400 year
period.[2] Makli Necropolis features several large funerary monuments belonging to
royalty, various Sufi saints, and esteemed scholars.
