Based on the course material, examine the potential effects of agroterrorism, as a subset of biological terrorism, on the United States agricultural sector and economy. How significant a threat do you view agroterrorism as broader subset of biological terrorism?
Agroterrorism what exactly is it. Well it is defined as an “intentional introduction of a plant or animal disease with the purpose of causing monetary losses, creating fear, and/or undermining social stability”. (Bergeron 2011; Monke 2006) Based on this definition it looks like that agroterrorism in basic terms is when something is intentionally brought into an organism that will cause bodily harm to others. By doing this it would cause mass panic.
The agriculture and food industry are something that the United States needs to continue stability and life. There is so much revenue that is generated from these industries and introducing a weapon like this would cause many issues. Typically the main threats that came to food was diseases and pests that are accidentally introduced to the food supplies. Introducing a bioterrorism weapon like that to the food supply would cause much hysteria throughout the United States. Maybe even across the world. We need food to survive and so on.
“The goal of agroterrorism is not specifically the death of plants and animals, but rather an agroterrorism event is an avenue to undermine consumer confidence, cause social turmoil and create a host of other concerns.” (Stirrup 2007) With this being said if the consumer has no confidence in what they are selling and the crops that they are planting damaged in a way that they would not be consumed the consumer would then loose funds that they need to survive. With that as well tampering with the nations food supply would impact the publics feelings of certain consumers food chain and cause many issues.
The threat of agroterrorism is a widespread prospective event that may require a vast knowledge base; extensive resources and a fundamental understanding of emergency management response. With all of this being said I do believe that it is significant enough to be considered a way that many people could attack the nation because sometimes things that introduced to plants or animals can go undetected for different amounts of time.

(Bergeron 2011; Monke 2006) Based on this definition it looks like that agroterrorism in basic terms is when something is intentionally brought into an organism that will cause bodily harm to others. By doing this it would cause mass panic.
The agriculture and food industry are something that the United States needs to continue stability and life. There is so much revenue that is generated from these industries and introducing a weapon like this would cause many issues. Typically the main threats that came to food was diseases and pests that are accidentally introduced to the food supplies. Introducing a bioterrorism weapon like that to the food supply would cause much hysteria throughout the United States. Maybe even across the world. We need food to survive and so on.
“The goal of agroterrorism is not specifically the death of plants and animals, but rather an agroterrorism event is an avenue to undermine consumer confidence, cause social turmoil and create a host of other concerns.” (Stirrup 2007) With this being said if the consumer has no confidence in what they are selling and the crops that they are planting damaged in a way that they would not be consumed the consumer would then loose funds that they need to survive. With that as well tampering with the nations food supply would impact the publics feelings of certain consumers food chain and cause many issues.
The threat of agroterrorism is a widespread prospective event that may require a vast knowledge base; extensive resources and a fundamental understanding of emergency management response. With all of this being said I do believe that it is significant enough to be considered a way that many people could attack the nation because sometimes things that introduced to plants or animals can go undetected for different amounts of time.

Nicole:
Vulnerability varies among people, some are more sensitive to it than others. When looking into various vulnerabilities I found that they can overlap, often vulnerable people are sensitive to risks that originate from economic, physical, social, biological, and genetic factors along with their lifestyle behaviors. Each of these factors plays an important role in vulnerabilities.
After an analysis of statistical data and trends related to different populations, I found that vulnerable mothers and children, abused individuals, and people affected by alcohol and substance abuse overlap in many ways. When considering data it is important to remember “It is difficult to get definitive data on any given population. Variations in how studies are conducted, the communities in which they are conducted, and the type of respondents all contribute to incomplete and inaccurate data compilation.”( Burkholder, D. M., & Nash, N. B. (2013). ). Vulnerable children can be affected by abuse ”Child maltreatment has enormous immediate and long-term repercussions. Beyond death, physical injury and disability, violence can lead to stress that impairs brain development and damages the nervous and immune systems.” (WHO). Many times child abuse can be linked to poverty and the stress of caring for children. Alcohol abuse can also be a cause of abuse of children, spouses or other people in our lives. Substance and alcohol abuse can also lead to health issues as well per the World health organization “Alcohol is a toxic and psychoactive substance with dependence producing propensities. Alcohol consumption contributes to 3 million deaths each year globally as well as to the disabilities and poor health of millions of people. Overall, the harmful use of alcohol is responsible for 5.1% of the global burden of disease” (WHO).

There are many factors that can affect a person’s vulnerability. These factors can consist of finances, family, and education. (Burkholder & Nash,2013). The three groups that I feel are most vulnerable are people diagnosed with mental conditions, immigrants and refugees, indigent and homeless people.
Studies show that 50% of Americans have had some sort of knowledge of a mental illness in their lifetime. 5% of adults in America have been diagnosed with a serious mental disor.

Research Update 2009
The North Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station provides an update on infrastructure projects and research. Improved facilities are needed to achieve the AES mission of developing and disseminating agriculture technology. Construction has been completed on several research centers and is ongoing for the greenhouse complex and beef research center. The 2009 legislative session provided $17 million for enhanced facilities including the greenhouse, beef center, and research center renovations. Student enrollment in agriculture programs is at a record high. Leadership changes and appointments are noted.
