The Making of
“The Alien Robber”

  by H.P.S. Room 12, Year 2,
             2010
First we spread all the toys out on the mat and talked about some different story
                                      ideas.
Mrs O recorded these ideas in our brainstorm book.
Then we voted on each story plot and the one with the most votes won.
We then collected up only the characters we had chosen so we could start
writing the storyboard for each page of our digital storybook.
Mrs O scribed the children’s ideas about what each page should say.
As we wrote each page of our story we also decided what the photo for that page
                                should include.
We wrote our story on large pages so we could look at it later on when we were
                           taking our digital photos.
When we started writing our story we realised our characters needed really clear
names rather than just using the kind of animal they were.
We also realised we needed to make them either a girl or a boy to make the story
the same from the beginning to the end.
Leon, Pia, Tarryn, Rona, Marcia and Yangling worked together to make the
invitations and letterboxes for our digital storybook.
They painted the letterboxes to match the colours of the characters: Shelley the
turtle had a green letterbox, Speedy the snow leopard had a black letterbox and
Bluey the blue teddy bear had a blue letterbox.
Daniel, Tobin and Katie made the presents for each of the characters to give to
the birthday girl, Bouncy the kangaroo.
They chose some containers to wrap up and decorate.
Nathan, Leyton and Keagan made party hats for Bouncy, Bluey, Speedy and
                              Shelley.
Monique, Kyle, Nancya and Mitchell used sponges and brown paint to carefully
                    paint Bouncy the kangaroo’s house.
Jayden used a sponge to paint a container with chocolate brown paint.
Then he glued red material on top with small pieces of green paper to look like
                                strawberries.
                                    Yum!
Namar and Jack painted small sponges brown like chocolate.
They glued these onto white plastic spoons.
Lastly they glued pieces of red material and green paper on the top to look like
                                 strawberries.
The pieces of cake looked delicious!
Rona and Tobin painted a plastic bottle covered in masking tape to make a tree
trunk and Mitchell painted the leaf covered part at the top of the tree.
Then they all cut apple shapes out of red paper and stuck them onto the wet
                                    leaves.
When both parts were dry, they taped them together on the back.
Everyone helped make something for our digital storybook.
Then we got some material and cushions that looked like sky and grass.
Finally we put everything on the table so it would all be ready for our special
                              photography day.
All of us knew which group we were in on ‘photo day’ and which photos we
                                needed to take.
We also found out who our buddies were going to be when it was time to type up
and insert the photos for each page of our DSB.
In Mrs Kilmartin’s group there was: Pia, Namar, Leon, Nathan and Tarryn.
Each group had a digital camera on a tripod and two more digital cameras on
                                 lanyards.
We used material to help us make the sky and grass in each scene.
We learnt to put cushions under the green material to make it look like we had
                          mountains in our photos.
In Miss Harris’ group there was: Jayden, Daniel, Jack, Keagan, Marcia and
                                 Nancya.
On the windows we pegged each page of the storyboard we made so we knew
                       what to photograph next.
The children took turns using the cameras and helping to arrange the sky, the
grass, the characters and the different props.
Sometimes our arms got tired holding the sky up in the right place.
In Mrs Oliphant’s group there was: Katie, Yangling, Tobin, Kyle and Mitchell.
We had to make sure each thing was in the right place so the photo would look
                                  right.
We learnt how to zoom in and zoom out so that only the things we wanted were
                               in our photos.
No children’s hands and no children’s heads!
We learnt a lot about cameras and taking digital photos.
We asked a lot of questions and had lots of fun too.
We moved our storyboard to the wall near the computers we were going to use
to type our digital storybook on.
Mrs O wrote our names in pairs on a chart on the wall so we could take turns
typing the words and inserting the right photo for a page or two of our DSB.
When we were done we made a P.M.I. chart about making a digital storybook.
It was good to see the things we found positive, minus and interesting.
I wonder what we will write after we finish our next DSB?
“The Alien Robber” was written and illustrated by
the Year 2 children in Room 12 at H.P.S.
