MAKER SPACES
“Makerspaces--also sometimes called hackerspaces--
can be any area where people gather to make and
create. These spaces often include 3D printers, but do
not necessarily have to. In makerspaces, people share
supplies, skills, and ideas, and often work together on
projects.” Sharona Ginsberg
“Fundamentally, makerspaces are a technological leap
past library knitting and quilting circles, where patrons
and experts have often come together to learn new
techniques and train others in a skill. The new tools are a
lot flashier, and certainly more expensive than a needle
and thread. The cost factor is what makes a makerspace
so appealing to library visitors—what one person cannot
afford to purchase for occasional use, the library can buy
and share with the community.” Manufacturing Maker Spaces
Na continuidade de uma tradição….
”A DML is a gathering of equipment that allows original
digital content to be created or analog content to be
converted to digital formats.” Goodman

DIGITAL MEDIA LABS
Learning Labs are spaces where young people can explore,
express, and create using digital media. They are guided by a
core philosophy that youth are best engaged when they’re
following their passions, collaborating with others, and being
makers and doers, not passive consumers. Learning Labs
respond to the interests of the young people themselves, their
leadership, and their participation

RAÍZES
“Space is being reconfigured around broader education
and research needs, and less around the management of
print collection. In effect, space is shifting from
infrastructure to engagement…” Lorcan Dempsey, 2012
“The new brand for the library is to expose itself as a
technological and social laboratory where citizens
experience and interact with each other or with the
professionals. Citizens and librarians have then a new
status, the status of creators: this promotes the
construction of a highest vision of the user and, more
generally, of subcultures” Accart, 2013
RAÍZES
'Maker culture' emphasizes learning-through-doing in a social
environment. Maker culture emphasizes informal, networked,
peer-led, and shared learning motivated by fun and self-
fulfillment. Maker culture encourages novel applications of
technologies, and the exploration of intersections between
traditionally separate domains and ways of working (,,,).
Community interaction and knowledge sharing are often mediated
through networked technologies, with websites and social media
tools forming the basis of knowledge repositories and a central
channel for information sharing and exchange of ideas, and
focused through social meetings in shared spaces.. .

About The Labs
The Labs is Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh's teen-only creative technology
program. The Labs provides teenagers with access to equipment, software, and
trained artist mentors in an innovative learning environment with the focus on
creativity and creation. Mentors provide teens with the level of assistance they
need in order to create something new. The Labs invites teens of all skill levels to
take part on a walk-in basis.
We have two kinds of sessions:
Workshops - Mentors lead project-based workshops drawing on the interests of
teens in the space, providing software and equipment tutorials when necessary.
Workshops are informal, fun, and drop-in friendly.
Open Lab - Teens get a chance to try new things by messing around with software
and equipment. Open Lab is your studio time.
