2. What is a Plateau ?
• A plateau is an elevated flat land. It is a flat-topped
tableland standing above the surrounding area.
• Plateaus is defined as an area of high elevation with
about 500 feet above sea level.
• These uplands have steep slope on one side or the
other.

3. Types of Plateaus :-
• INTERMONTANE PLATEAU
• VOLCANIC PLATEAU
• DISSECTED PLATEAU
• PIEDMONT PLATEAU

4. INTERMONTANE PLATEAUS:-
• The plateau surrounded by hills and mountains on all sides are
called Intermontane plateau.
• Example – Tibetan plateau , Mexican Plateau, Peruvian plateau.

5. VOLCANIC PLATEAU
• The flow of lava on the surface of the earth has resulted numerous
volcanic plateaus.
• Example – Deccan plateau of India, South Africa plateau,
Colombian plateau etc.

6. DISSECTED PLATEAU :-
• A dissected plateau is a plateau that has been intensively eroded
by rivers, glacier, wind etc.
• Example – Colorado plateau, Deccan plateau of India etc.

7. PIEDMONT PLATEAU :-
• Plateaus surrounded by mountains ranges on one side and plains
on the other side are called Piedmont plateaus.
• Example – the Patagonian plateau of South America, The
Appalachian Plateau etc.
