Fashionable Weapons of
Mainstream Disruption
Fashion= Social Ranking
By Aiden Dexter Cole Fisher
Wikipedia
Mainstream is the common current
thought of the perceived majority. It
includes all popular culture and media
culture, typically disseminated by
mass media.
Urban Dictionary
Mainstream is what's the new trend. when one
"style" gets old, a new one is reborn, a
mainstream person is someone who jumps
from trend to trend so that they fit in with the
rest of the crowd. Mainstream is being what
society thinks you should be, and look like.
FASHION ADAPTION
Concept stage
Publishing stage
Brand endorsement, through mass media (High class)
Continued Advertising
Warn by Figure of culture
Reproduced and adapted for a lower price range
(Middle class)
Covered in through catalogues, TV ads
Cheap Reproductions, Trend leaves the stream
Discounted reproductions (now reaching Lower income
budget)
Innovators take reference and come up with the next
big thing
Blanket Categories are a part of the
stream.
When the media gets ahold of an unknown
category, they tend to shorten the the
subgenres of a Singular style/trend. For
example: Hipsters can alter their style
(Aesthetics and Personalities) to create
alternate subgenre that come from the
reference word, hipster.
Social rankings
Nowadays people genuinely judge others through their
appearances, linking it to their job qualifications, religous
beleifs, education, personalities and incomes which then
define their social class,(High,Mid,Low) and their styles.
The average item, now being mass produced, is what you
call mainstream. The weapon here is that mainstream
makes you the ultimate average. The higher class
consumers would break this code easily throught their
increased disposable income making them “above the
code”
NOW ONTO MY
OPINION
(Personalised reflection)
Nerd notes:
● 6-8% of Income is Disposable towards
Clothing according to the U.S
● The average income in 2014 (considering
bonuses & Overtime) A$78,879 per annum.
Status Battles: Based on youth
demographic
VS
The Difference
Culture Kings Cotton On
Relatables: Relatables:
Comfort, Functionality, Warmth, Use Comfort, Functionality, Warmth, Use
Status: Status:
Medium High class. (Almost like being in a
secret club)
Medium Class (You have a basic income to
spend, why not make it on something
slightly less mainstream?)
Comparison: 1 Item = Medium Income Comparison: 3 Items = Medium Income
ALL BOUT DAT STATUS
Conclude it.
As this is my reflective presentation, note that this is a
reflection based on the thoughts of a graphics design
student IN, practice. not ON practice which would happen
at the conclusion of this speech.
This quote has been reproduced post modernly by my mother, Dr Deborah L. Fisher (Fashion
Lecturer), Now by me, but originated from Donald Schӧn’s book “The Reflective Practitioner, How
Professionals Think in Action.
Thank you for listening
