The document provides details about the production of an introduction for a BBC documentary project. It discusses how stock footage and news clips were edited together using quick cuts to create an engaging intro. Feedback found the intro didn't make the purpose clear, so logos were added. Footage of a day-to-day scene at the office was then introduced, using stock footage of a drive to set the scene followed by a voiceover interview to explain without needing text.

Introduction
For my introduction I wanted it to catch the eye of the audience and then show
them what's to come. To do this I used a variety of breaking news clips. The first
problem with this is that there is a lack of news clips about social media. To get
around this I used any breaking news clips and cropped them to just the breaking
news section. After I cropped them all together and then left the real social media
news clips till last it gave the effect they were all social media news. The second
problem was I struggled to screen record them. I took my clips off of YouTube.
When screen recording I found out that the red bar on YouTube would stay making
the footage look very unprofessional so I had to find another way around it. What I
did was I found the link of the YouTube video then downloaded and saved the
video to my SD-card then clipped it up and shortened it so it was just the breaking
news section and now there was no red bar and the video was in 1080p ( high
quality) which makes it appear more professional. I edited the first part of my intro
(the breaking news section) in a specific way. I wanted this to be very in your face,
eye catching. To do this I kept the clips no longer than 3 seconds. I used Cap Cut
to shorten the clips. I also didn’t add in a single transition this is because the quick
cuts between clip to clip kept my audience engaged and it allowed the intro to look
snappy. I experimented with different transitions however they all lengthened the
clips and actually made the into flow. Even though normally you would want
something to flow in this case I didn’t as I wanted it to be snappy so the audience
couldn't keep up. Because of this I found out no transition was the best way to
achieve my goal. I shot and edited it in this way to make sure my audience was
entertained. I knew that my audience was young so long boring clips would make
them stop watching straight away so I did the opposite to keep them watching for
as long as possible.

Introduction
The second part of my intro was the “The Truth” and the “coming up” section. I did this because
not only does the BBC like to do this so it kept with the codes and conventions, it also gives my
audience a glimpse of what's to come which will intrigue them to watch more. I know it will intrigue
them because I have done surveys to find out what they wanted to watch so if they get a glimpse
of something they like they watch the whole documentary which is my aim. The coming up section
was made up of clips from the time I spent at the office. This included interviews, day to day tasks,
examples of work they do and much more. I will talk later on how I shot each of these scenes
using thing such as rule of thirds, backgrounds and more. The way I edited the coming up section
was completely different to the first part of the intro. I wanted this part to flow and look visually
pleasing and look high quality. I first used Cap Cut again top trim up all the clips. I then
experimented with different transitions which allowed me to find out that the best one was ”mix”
this merged each clip together which allowed them to flow perfectly. I then added high tempo
music to this section to hype up my audience and get them excited for the rest of the
documentary. Also I faded the end of the music off so it was a smooth transition into me
introducing the documentary. To transition to the coming up section and to properly introduce the
documentary I created a title for my documentary which was the truth. I used photoshop to create
this scene. I came up with the title name my self then I picked a font which looked the most
suitable. I done research into other videos which the BBC have produced to see which fonts they
like to use. I picked the one which was closest to the one they use to make sure I kept with the
codes and conventions. I choose to change the letter coloring to red. I picked red because not
only does it get people attention the best and intrigue them. It also has the connotations of
adventure and danger. Both of these is featured in my documentary so I felt like red was the
perfect color. Also my audience will see red and think of these connotations and want to see what
happens. They will want to go on the adventure and they will want to see what danger there is.
Especially because they are young it is more likely they are intrigued by adventure and danger
than anything else. I used the letter spacing tool to make the title look as clean as possible. I also
added the BBC Three logo onto this scene so it allowed my audience to know where to go to find
out more about this documentary. It also keep with the codes and conventions. To cut to this
section I downloaded a classic static transition from YouTube then I added it to the end of the
news clips.

Introduction
The next scene in my documentary was the main introduction to the
documentary. This is where I spoke to the camera to speak about what
we have filmed and what is going to happen and what the problem we are
discussing is. The way I shot this section was in the professional studio. I
set up the lighting in a specific way. I used two big studio lamps. I set
them to full power (6) so it lit up my scene. I aimed them behind me so
that it wouldn’t look to bright on me and gave me a glow which would look
professional. I set up the background with the black curtain. This plain
background looked great with the light on as it looked very professional
and something you would see in other documentary's. I used the iPhone
14 for the camera. I set the video to 4k 60fps to make sure the quality
was the best it could be. I set the camera up using the rule of thirds to
make sure I was right in the center when talking as I wanted to be the
main subject of the scene and putting me directly in the middle will
establish this. I transitioned this scene in with a simple fade to black
which looks clean and professional. I then cut the scene up as I started
the film early to make sure I didn’t miss any footage of me speaking I also
cut the end off of me ending the footage as it doesn’t look professional. I
also edited the sound of this scene I turned the volume up by 8 decibels. I
then faded the sound out so that the scene still remained but the sound
slowly went away. I did all of this on premier pro using the audio gain
feature and then for the sound to fade out I used adobe audition to do it.

Introduction Feedback.
For this project I shot and edited in parts. After this part
(my intro) I showed my target audience, I then got there
feedback and what they thought about it. After reviewing
the results it showed that they liked the intro but they
didn’t really know who the documentary was for.
Because of this I decided to add in the BBC Three logo
and northern voices logo right at the start this allowed
my audience to know who it was for and if they want to
find out more about this they can research into the
subject on there websites. To add this in all I did was
downloaded the two images from google, re sized them,
slightly changed the color saturation to make them a bit
more bright ( to catch the attention of my audience) then
added them onto the begging of my clips and then
added the fade to black transition at the end. For this
transition I lengthened the time because I wanted to split
these logos up from my actual intro.

Day to Day Scene
The next part of the project was the day to day life. This was
recommended by the audience so I made sure this was a
main part of the documentary. To introduce this section I
used stock footage of cars driving to give the effect that we
were on the way to the office. I used stock footage because I
wanted to get high quality footage which is impossible to film.
I got this footage from YouTube by downloading it then
cropping it to suit my needs. I experimented with different
videos but after the results from the survey I decided to use
this one. I then added in the voiceover. I decided to use a
voiceover instead of text on the screen because I know my
audience is young and would rather listen than read. I used
voice memos on the iPhone to record the voiceover in a
empty studio so there was no background noise at all so it
made sure my voice sounded as crisp as possible. I then
used adobe audition to edit the sound. I changed the sound
to 12 decibels to make sure it was loud and clear.

Day to Day Scene
This section began with footage of Owen going through an online call with
he had one of his clients. It is then followed up with an interview with him
about what he was just doing. The first scene was a shot in a medium
close up. I used the rule of thirds to position the actor to the left of the
screen and then moved him into the middle. I did this because I wanted to
get some focus on the background to give the audience an understanding
of his job and that he is based in fashion. I then moved him to the center
to show that he is now the main subject of attention in the scene. The way
I edited the first clip was in Cap Cut. I cut section off to make sure it wasn’t
too long then added the high resolution effect then turned that down to
30% so it looked clean and not too over the top. I then used premier pro to
control the volume and turn it down a little bit as it was a bit too loud. I
then added some music over the top just slightly as some background
noise. I then used the fade to black transition to transition it to the next
part of this scene. This scene was also shot in a medium close up shot
however I did it from an eye level side angle. I did this to add some variety
to my clips as I knew I would be filming other clips from a front angle and I
didn’t want audience getting bored of the same angle over and over again.
I edited this section very similar to the last one. I used the same high
resolution effect on 30% again so the actor looked the same and there
was continuity. I also chopped up parts and any bloopers. Then I finally
edited the volume on premier pro and used the audio gain tool to turn it up
by 8 decibels.

Day to Day Scene
The next part of this scene is Ben’s part. Ben is taking footage to be posted on social
media. He then runs the audience through what he does and how the business is
ran. I shot the first part in a close up. I did this because I wanted to show the detail of
the phone to show the actions Ben is doing. I also wanted to capture the detail of the
shoe. I swap focus between the phone and the shoe multiple times. When looking at
the phone it creates a soft focus for the rest of the scene in that bit of footage. This
allows the audience to only focus on the phone and it shows that the phone and the
action that is taking place is the main subject of that clip. I edited this footage very
similar to Owens part. I started off with a fade to black transition this is because I
want to keep the continuity of the last transition this allows the footage to flow better
as if each scene had a different transition it would not look pleasing to the eye. I then
added the same high resolution effect this time I changed it to 50% as this allowed
the audience to see the details of the shoe more clearly. I then added another clip of
him taking footage which I did the exact same steps to. The way I shot the second
part of the footage was I used a medium close up from a slightly low angle, from the
front. I did this because I wanted Ben to seem higher up than the audience and that
the audience should look up to Ben to be like him as he uses social media for
positive thing and not negative harmful ways so they should aspire to be like Ben
and this low angle gives off this effect. The reason behind the medium close up was
to capture the emotion in the actors face and to show the happiness he gets from his
online job. I edited this scene on Cap Cut. I used the trimming tool to get rid of any
unwanted footage. I then added 30% of the high resolution effect so him and Owen
looked the same. Finally I added the fade to black transition at the end. Next I used
premier pro to edit the sound. I used the audio gain tool to increase the volume to 10
decibels.

Day to Day Scene
The final scene of the day in life part of my documentary was an
example of a sale. I shot this scene in many different shots and
angles. I started in a MCU shot then moved in a CU of the items
then straight into another CU shot of the phone then back to a
MCU shot of Owen speaking. The reason behind each of the shot
changes was to make sure the audience knew what to focus on.
So for example at the beginning I wanted to show who was in the
scene that’s why I choose a MCU. Then I wanted to show the
object we were discussing so I chose a CU shot to allow the
audience to see the object in high detail. Then the focus changed
to the phone/sale so back to a CU so the audience can read the
numbers for themselves. Finally I wanted Owen to discuss the
sale sand benefits of social media so I went back to a MCU so we
can see the emotion of the actor and able to watch him speak to
us about the benefits as it allows the audience to put a face to a
voice which makes them believe what he is saying a lot more.
Once again I edited this section just like the others to make sure
it all flowed and that there was no crazy transitions that didn’t look
unprofessional. I changed the saturation to 30% to make sure
Owen looked the same across all clips.

Positive Statistics.
The reasoning behind this scene was I wanted to show how social
media is a positive thing. The best way I believed I could show this
was through facts and stories. I wanted to show some real stories
in the news to do this I researched and downloaded 5 stories to
add. However I didn't just want stories on the screen with no
background, I wanted the stories to sit on top of something. To do
this I videoed some cinematic shots of the office and items in the
office for the background. I know the BBC like to use cinematic
shots so this will follow there codes and conventions. I did have a
problem with these hots because 90% of the footage corrupted
meaning I only had 7 seconds worth of footage and the voiceover I
had planed was at least 45 seconds. To overcome this problem I
had to duplicate the footage over 8 times then match them all up
so it all flowed. I then added the news articles on top however I
timed each of them so they can on one by one and left the scene
one by one as I thought it looked more professional and gave my
audience time to take in each article. I then added the voiceover to
these clips. The voiceover was filmed on voice memos in a empty
room so there was no noise to ruin my voice and then it was edited
on adobe audition. I increased the volume to 12 decibels and also
added a fade off on my voice and allowed the stats to keep
running for a couple seconds after.

College Introduction.
Originally this documentary was supposed to be only shot in
the office of the business owner and was supposed to be only
about them. However when I went to upload my footage to edit
only 50% would upload. Because of this I had to improvise. I
didn’t have time to re shoot everything in the office because of
this I chose to shoot at college because my audience also
wanted to see the negative side of social media. So I
interviewed college students for the second part of the
documentary. To introduce this section I once again used stock
car footage. I choose footage which was completely different
angles to the other car footage I used. Again, I used YouTube
to download it then Cap Cut to edit and trim everything. After
that I added a voiceover to introduce this part of the
documentary. I uploaded the voiceover to adobe audition
where I was able to control the volume so it fit this part of the
documentary.

College Introduction.
This scene was the first scene actually in the college. I
decided to film me walking into the studio where the
interviews will taken place. I did this because I wanted to
introduce the new setting to the audience and let them take
in where we now are. I shot all these scenes as an
establishing shot at eye level. The reasoning behind the
establishing shot was because the main subject of this
scene was the setting and not the actual actor. The reason
behind the eye level angle was I wanted the audience feel
like it was them walking behind me, walking through the
college into the studio ready to watch he interviews. The way
I edited this intro was I wanted it to be snappy and the new
location change to grab the audience attention because of
this I included more volume of short clips instead of longer
vids but less volume. For example I made sure each vid was
less than 10 seconds. I also didn’t add in any transitions I
just used Cap Cut to trim each clip to make them flow so for
each clip I was walking at every point this showed the
continuity and made it all flow.

College Interviews.
This scene was the interviews I did at college. This scene was
filmed in the professional studio with the lighting set up. I used two
big studio lamps. I set them to full power (6) so it lit up my scene. I
aimed them behind the actors so that it wouldn’t look to bright on
them and gave them a glow which would look professional. I set up
the background with the black curtain. This plain background
looked great with the light on as it looked very professional and
something you would see in other documentary's. I used the

rule of thirds to make sure the actor was right in the center when
talking as I wanted them to be the main subject of the scene and
putting them directly in the middle will establish this. I made sure
the actor walked in and used this to transition each of the clips. I
also didn’t have the camera on the interviewer and I used the voice
of God effect to allow the audience to think it is them asking the
questions. I used Cap Cut to create name tags to introduce each of
the college students I then added transitions to the name tags so
they didn’t just disappear. Once again I used 30% saturation on all
of the actors. I also cut the excess of each of the clips.

Negative Statistics.
This part was the exact same concept as the positive
statistics but instead I wanted to show the bad side of
social media as this was requested by my audience to
see. This was shot in the exact same way. However I
used stock footage of a crowd in town instead of my own
footage. This is because this is something you say a lot
in BBC documentary so I decided to keep with the codes
and conventions and re create this. I then researched the
news stories downloaded then added them to my clip. I
timed them so they came in shot one by one. Then it was
time to do the voiceover which was shot in the studio
with no one in so it allowed my voice to be as crisp as
possible. Then I used the premier pro audio gain tool to
turn myself up so it was loud and clear.

The Ending.
To end my documentary I wanted to do a summary of what
had happened so far and the results we found out during the
time. I then wanted to do a ”next time” section as well as the
BBC like to do this so to keep with the codes and
conventions I also added one. I shot the summary in the
studio, I believed this was the best place as it allowed me to
set up the lighting again so the scene looked very
professional. I set the camera up and positioned me in the
center. This was shot as a MCU shot as it allowed the
audience to see me fully and see my emotions. The way I
edited this was very similar to the rest of the clips, I started
with a fade to black transitions then I used premier pros
audio gain tool and increased the volume so my voice was
clear. I added the high saturation effect and turned it to 30%
so all he clips of any actors looked the same. For the ”next
time” section I used excess footage that didn’t make actual
cut. I then clipped it up into 5 second clips and used the mix
transition to make it flow. I also used the text tool on premier
pro to add in the Next time. I then added high tempo music to
excite my audience for the next documentary.

Organization.
For this project I knew I had to be very organized as it was such a
huge project and I would have had 15 minutes worth of footage. To
make sure this was all okay I had to arrange my assets. I went through
all my clips and sorted them into folders. I put all the usable clips in
one folder and the outtakes/bloopers into another. This meant I knew
where exactly to look for my footage when editing and I wasn’t having
to test and check every video to see if it was okay. Not only did I have
to organize myself I also had to organize my staff and crew. To do this
I created a timetable so they knew exactly when I would be needing to
film and what I would be shooting so they could prepare. Also for any
interview I did I sent them the questions a week in advance meaning
they had plenty time to plan there answer. I also sent a reminder the
day before every shoot with them just to make sure

Problems I Overcome.
Over the course of this project I faced many problems. For
example premier pro would not let me render so I had to
research into that then I realized I had to change my
sequence settings. Another example was Cap Cut, halfway
through my project Cap Cut would not allow me ton export
anything anymore because of tis I switched my software to
premier pro. Another example that I have already spoke about
was the problem with my footage. Over 60% of my footage
was corrupted meaning I had to re shot loads of clips which
did take a lot of time. Luckily I overcame all these problems
and was able to produce a product that I am happy with.
