hey say it is the most romantic city
in the world and with a museum
dedicated to romance, a love wall
and postcard-worthy views, Paris
truly owns its City of Romance
title, making it the most romantic destination
for any day of the year though particularly
special for Valentine’s Day.
With many from around the world
coming to Paris to declare their love, from
marriage proposals to celebrations of special
anniversaries, the city dubbed the City of
Romance has played host to endless romantic
stories over the centuries. If you are looking for
a lesser known rendezvous spot, away from
the traditional locations, to create your own
memory you cannot bypass the Love Wall.
Le Mur des Je T’Aime is a mural paved with
tiles declaring “I Love You” in 300 languages,
creating, literally, a love-filled backdrop for your
declaration of love.
While to many Paris is all about romance,
to others it is all about the cuisine, and with
more fine tables found than in any other city
in the world, the French capital gives you the
opportunity to combine the two loves. Le
Grand Véfour is an institution of the culinary
capital and is a fine example of where guests
are invited to sample refined French fare and
experience the romance of the dining room
where delicate carved panelling and neo-
classical frescoes mirror the royal history of
the city where past diners included Jean-Paul

8th arrondissement is closed for renovations,
this sumptuous restaurant, which oozes
yesteryear glamour, is where his cooking
classes are being held, offering amateurs an
exceptional opportunity to learn the fine art
of haute cuisine in one of the oldest and one
of the most opulent settings in the city, if not
the world.
Bursting with the arts, a lovely way to spend
Valentine’s Day in Paris is to visit some of the
world’s most extraordinary museums. One of
the museums made with love is the Musée de
la Vie Romantique (Museum of the Romantic
Life) where you will find mementos of George
Sand and Chopin and paintings by Ary Scheffer.
The museum dedicated to everything romance
is nestled in an Italian villa, a perfectly preserved
mansion, which was home to the 19th century
artist Scheffer.
France is known for its savoir-faire in
jewellery design and haute joaillerie house

It may be a cliché and it may be too traditional
but it still remains one of the most beautiful
places to soak in the romance of the city. The
Eiffel Tower was designed in 1889 for the World’s
Fair and it was welcomed with mixed reviews
at the time, and now, almost 130 years later,
it has become the symbol of the city and the
iconic monument that marks a million and one
memorable romantic memories. for the perfect
view of the Tower make your way to the Palais
de Chaillot where you can take in its splendour
in full, and wait for the sun to set, setting up the
most romantic moment for you, when the Eiffel
Tower starts twinkling in the night with what
seems like millions of sparkling diamonds.

ccording to the Chinese zodiac,
2016 will be the year of the fire
monkey, which is a smart, quick-
witted, frank sign. Usher in the
Chinese New Year on February
7, 2016, which is Chinese New Year’s eve, and
New Year’s Day February 8, with a feast at one
of Paris’s many excellent Chinese restaurants, or
take a break from the delicious but hearty dishes
of winter in France with a lighter oriental meal.
Chez Ly
The elegant Madame Ly has created a superb
little chain of Chinese restaurants since she
arrived in Paris from Hong Kong in 1988.
All five of her addresses in stylish western
Paris are elegant places with refined decors,
charming service and excellent cooking. If
one stands out as a destination for a special
Chinese New Year’s feast, however, it might
be the enchanting restaurant on Rue Lord
Byron just off the Champs-Elysées, because it’s
spacious and beautifully well-lit. Start with the
langoustine salad, some steamed Cantonese-
style ravioli filled with shrimp, chicken and
vegetables, and maybe an order of the
steamed salt and pepper shrimp, and then try
impeccably cooked main courses such as filet
of beef with ginger and chives or Hong Kong-
style lacquered duck. Finish up with a fresh
mango for dessert, and note that they have an
excellent wine list as well.

Chez Vong
The elaborate décor with lush greenery,
big-bellied Buddhas, dark wood panelling,
fountains and Chinese porcelain, and a
convenient location in Les Halles in the middle
of Paris are as much of a draw as the cooking
at this long-running and rather dressy Chinese
table. Portions are modest, so begin with a
variety of starters, maybe some Peking-style
soup and then the sea bass and lotus root
salad and steamed raviolis before ordering
dishes like Sichuan-style beef and, for high
rollers, the lacquered Bresse chicken, which
must be ordered in advance and is priced at a
solid 142 euros.

L’Orient d’Or
The garlands of red chili peppers in the dining
room at this relaxed, affordable and very
popular restaurant not far from the Folies
Bergère are a tip-off that the kitchen here uses
the same ingredient generously. They’ll tone
a dish down on request, however, and not all
of the Hunanese dishes are fire-alarm hot. Try
the jellyfish salad, delicious smoked pork with
chives and dried peppers, steamed scallops
with crushed garlic, tripe with pepper and
sautéed Chinese cabbage.

Shang Palace
Hidden away on a lower level of the discreet
and very luxurious Shangri-La Hotel Paris hotel,
this plush and very intimate Michelin one-star
restaurant is not only the most elegant Chinese
restaurant in Paris but one of the city’s very
best. Chef Samuel Lee, a native of Hong Kong,
cooks exquisitely refined but richly flavoured
dishes like the best Peking duck in Paris, the
skin is crunchy, the bird fully flavoured, and

The exceptionally cordial service and excellent
cooking at this tranquil restaurant in a quiet
residential district of the well-heeled 16th
arrondissement have made this restaurant one
of the best regarded Chinese kitchens in Paris.
Classic dishes such as spring rolls, Peking duck
and various noodle dishes are made with first-
rate ingredients and great care.

TAOKAN
Tucked away in the heart of Saint-Germain-
des-Prés, this decidedly chic and very intimate
little restaurant attracts a stylish international
clientele who appreciate its low lighting,
comfortable ecru décor and light, healthy,
carefully cooked dishes. Start off with one of
the house cocktails, a Taokan, which is made
with Aperol, Champagne and yuzu liqueur, and
then try the lobster and green apple ravioli,
grilled Peking-style ravioli stuffed with chicken,
scallop and mango tartare, and steamed cod
with fresh ginger and white tea sauce.

LA TAVERNE DE ZHAO
This simple little restaurant near the
Canal Saint-Martin in the hip young 10th
arrondissement has become a hit for the
authentic cooking of China’s Shaanxi province
that’s served up by the amiable Zhao, who
grew up there. The eager crowd of regulars
flocks here for the pork and cucumber filled
crepes, ravioli, meat buns and hot pot dishes of
noodles in bouillon with various garnishes.

TRICOTIN
This big busy restaurant in Paris’s main
“Chinatown”, the neighbourhood in the 13th
arrondissement that runs from Place d’Italie
to the périphérique, or beltway that encircles
Paris, is the perfect place to come in a group

for a big feast of the dim sum (mostly steamed,
sometimes fried dumplings), which are their
specialty. Among the best ones are the ha
kao (shrimp dumplings), sui mai (dumpling
filled with Chinese chives), and lo mao gai, or
rice cooked inside of a lotus leaf. They also do
good chow fun (thick rice noodles), roast pork
and sautéed Chinese broccoli. The pace is fast
and furious at this casual place, but the food is
delicious and very reasonably priced.

TROIS FOIS PLUS DE PIMENT
This attractive new restaurant in the Marais has
been packed ever since it opened several months
ago because the quality of its dumplings and
noodle dishes is so good. The chef comes from
Chengdu, the capital of China’s Sichuan province,
which explains the serious spiciness of the cooking
here, although the heat can be moderated for
those with more timid palates. The Dan-Dan
noodles in soup are especially good, as are the
Sichuan-style beef noodles and the vegetarian
version of the same dish. Eat-in or takeaway.

abulous Fiats, racy Renaults and
automobile memorabilia all offer an
entertaining and design filled setting
to enjoy fine and authentic food from
a host of horizons.
One of the most iconic places in town
to stop in for a good homemade meal in a
singularly automobile ambiance is the aptly
named Auto Passion Café. The restaurant
opened at the end of 1999 and has been going
strong ever since. Seven days a week car lovers
and just lovers of good food and a unique
ambiance swirl through their doors. There are
no less than 20 display windows presenting
the memorabilia and diverse documents of a
host of automobile clubs who regularly hold
their meetings there, for some every month,
and a new car thrones in the establishment
every three weeks. It is a lieu that has been
frequented by figures in the auto racing world
including Sébastien Loeb and Alain Prost and
the establishment hosts dinner debates with
racing car drivers twice a month. There is a full
cocktail menu with whimsically named drinks
like the Racing Car Driver or the Hitchhiker
(these two are alcohol-free) or savour a Rally
menu at lunch time that includes a choice of
three appetisers and main courses from the
main menu called the Kart, a word play on the
French word for menu, carte, and karting. There
is also a little driver’s menu for children with a
choice of mini cheeseburgers and spaghetti
carbonara, followed by dessert. Offerings on the
main menu include a generous platter of cold
cuts, terrines and Cantal cheese to share or an
antipasto of grilled vegetables with wholegrain
bread. The appetiser course, named Starting Grid
on the menu, brings several choices including a
poached organic egg with seasonal mushrooms
and chorizos sausage while main courses, called
Pit Stop, include pork tenderloin in an orange
and ginger sauce served with homemade purée
or filet of sea bass with almond crumble and
candied lemon. Desserts, referred to naturally as
the Finish Line, offer up French toast or a mango
passion fruit tiramisu.
Meanwhile, delicious food, great drinks,
cars, cars, and more cars, exhibitions revolving
around them and a fine boutique are all found
in the luminous L’Atelier Renault, an emblematic
venue on the Champs-Elysées where traditional
French brasserie fare can be enjoyed on the 1st
floor in a convivial ambiance punctuated by
automotive activities and events. Offerings at
the L’Atelier Renault Café reflect the revolving
exhibitions held in the concept store. Winning
appetisers include salmon gravlax or warm goat
cheese with honey and pecans. The grilled sea
scallops are accompanied to perfection by a
creamy Parmesan-filled risotto and among the
Grand Prix quality meats on the menu is the
confit of lamb shoulder served with heirloom
vegetables. But the real fun here is found on the
dessert menu. Indulge in the Coupe de L’Atelier
Renault Café, a sinful bowl filled with chocolate,
salted caramel and hazelnut praline ice-creams,

brownies, chocolate sauce and whipped cream.
Or you might want to opt for the Elysées pastry
especially created for the café by the Parisian
house of tea and pastries Angelina. Before or
after your meal or a drink discover an array of
Renault cars in the showroom downstairs or
watch Grand Prix races broadcast live. There is a
free workshop for children daily and a boutique
carries a fine selection of miniatures, key chains
and Formula 1 products.
Over at MotorVillage, the Parisian showcase
for the mythical Italian carmaker Fiat, a state-
of-the art avant-garde space offers a journey
into Italy and its worlds of design, technology,
fashion and of course great cuisine. From the
elegant NoLita restaurant upstairs or the café La
Terrazza downstairs you can gaze upon the cars
in a magical glass tube that rises up 14 metres
high into the middle of the space showcasing
a car on each floor. It offers a glimpse into the
world of Fiat and its iconic car makes among
them Alfa Romeo, Lancia and Maserati. The La
Terrazza café offers great Italian coffees all day
long and classic light Italian fare and snacks like
authentic pizza and freshly made panini while
genuine Italian cuisine from throughout the
peninsula is served upstairs at NoLita where the
menu changes with the seasons. The winter
menu proposed by chef Vittorio Beltramelli
includes a range of superbly prepared starters
like tiny and tasty fried octopus and his
celebrated vitello tonnato (thinly sliced veal
with tuna) flavoured with black truffle. For the
pasta course the spaghetti Cacio & Pepe is a
fine choice bursting with peppery cheese and
Sicilian shrimp marinated in lime. The calf’s liver,
Venetian style of course, is done to perfection.
The Motor Village ambiance is all enhanced by
cutting edge videos, temporary exhibitions and
a superb boutique.
Another automotive note, the Rétromobile
trade show, which showcases classic, vintage
and collector cars, rolls into Paris from February
3rd through to February 7th. Being held for

of variations on purple,
deep pink, blues and greens
forms a perfect square in abstract, a group
of what seems to be friends sits around a
table at a whimsical airport surrounded by
greenery and in an installation, colourful
carpets line the walls, ceiling and floor of a
room. Contemporary Chinese art is currently
being showcased at the Fondation Louis
Vuitton with an exhibition bringing together
12 artists from different generations who
live in Mainland China. The show, entitled
Bentu, Chinese Artists in the Turbulence of
Transformation, displays works in a host of
mediums reposing on various techniques
drawn from local traditions and cultures as
well as state-of the-art technology. Bentu
means native land and in contemporary
Chinese art implies a dialectical concept that
reconciles local bentu with global bentu
within a process of universalism and a critical
re-discovery of true identity. This expression,
bentu, is central to the reflection of artists,
critics and researchers in China today. The
works reflect an interpretation of the new
economic order, ecology, as well as the
transformation of the relationship between
the city and the country and also address
questions inherent to identity.
This is the first exhibition devoted to
Chinese art that has been held in France in
10 years and was organised in collaboration
with the Ullens Center for Contemporary Art
in Beijing.
Parallel to the show, the Foundation’s
permanent exhibition space will feature works
emanating from the Foundation’s collection
in a host of mediums by Xu Zhen, Ai Weiwei,
Yang Fudong, Huang Yong Ping among other
Chinese artists. Among the monumental
works on display are Al Weiwei’s Tree and

one of the most venerated goddesses of the
Chinese Buddhist pantheon into an enlarged
and highly coloured Pop art figure.
Art and an extensive programme of
musical events, cinema, performance art,
poetry, conferences and debates round out
the programme.
The Fondation Louis Vuitton, dedicated
to showcasing contemporary art, opened
its doors in October of 2015. Housed in
a spectacular building commissioned
by Bernard Arnault and designed by
the American architect Frank Gehry, the
Foundation’s building features spaces
dedicated to the permanent collections,
temporary exhibitions and commissioned
works. Its 350-seat adjustable auditorium was
conceived to host various cultural events.
The Foundation is located on the frontier
between the Bois de Boulogne and the
Jardin d’Acclimatation, delightful strolling
spaces well known to Parisians. The charming
Jardin d’Acclimatation is a 19th century
landscaped park filled with a host of plant
and animal species. The natural, woody
environment of the Jardin d’Acclimatation
served as an inspiration for Frank Gehry to
create the Foundation’s structure of glass
and transparency embodied in a glass shell,
an assembly of blocks known as the “iceberg”
that covers the body of the building. And
the building, set on a water garden, blends
brilliantly into the natural environment
of woods and gardens around it. From
the building’s terraces, unusual views and
perspectives of Paris can be found along with
those of the imminent woods.
The metro stop for the Fondation is Les
Sablons but the Foundation has set up an
electric shuttle bus leaving every quarter of
an hour from the Place Charles de Gaulle at
the top of Avenue de Friedland and dropping
visitors off in front of the Foundation.

A Happy Birthday
The Musée du Quai Branly, which houses an impressive
and beautifully displayed collection of indigenous arts
from Africa, Asia, Oceania and the Americas is turning
ten years old this year. The museum, which showcases
non-Western arts and civilisations from the Neolithic
period to the 20th century through its permanent
collections and temporary exhibitions, complemented
by a rich programme of performances, conferences
and special events, has enjoyed an enormous success
with the general public. The current exhibition,
Persona, Etrangement humain, looks at how certain
objects take on a life of their own, becoming a type of
person in their own right. The show brings together
some 230 statues, sculptures, robots and film extracts
shedding light on these strange humans. Meanwhile,
a show devoted to shamans and divinities in Pre-
Columbian Ecuador bringing together 260 works and
archaeological pieces opens on February 16.

Hugo in Love
An exhibition focusing on the role love and sensuality played in the life and works of the French poet, novelist and dramaturge,
Victor Hugo is being played out in the Maison de Victor Hugo, the writer’s Parisian home turned museum. The show, entitled
Eros Hugo, entre pudeur et excès, focuses on the role modesty played in his romantic works juxtaposed with a certain excess,
which emerges through the sheer power of his writing and in his personal relationships. Eroticism is absent from his literary
works in which love is depicted as an idyll, almost chaste, though Hugo the man embraced vitality and was an inveterate
womaniser. The show follows this duality in a chronological fashion through works by Hugo alongside sculptures by Rodin,
paintings by Böcklin, Corot and Courbet, and drawings from Ingres and Delacroix, among others.

Dynamic Dinosaurs
The fascinating world of dinosaurs unfolds
in this fun and educational exhibition at the
Palais de la Découverte as visitors plunge back
200 to 65 million years ago into the Jurassic
and Cretaceous periods when dinosaurs
ruled the planet Earth. Seven animatronics,
animated robots, 60 fossils and a sequence
of astonishing videos take the visitor into
the world of these giants who once roamed
the planet Earth. Among the creatures that
seemingly come to life is the enormous,
herbivorous long-necked Camarasaurus,
the ferocious Tarbosaurus with its enormous
head and powerful jaws filled with pointy
teeth and the spindly bird-like Gallimimus
spending some time with an Oviraptor
with its parrot-like head and which was light
enough to incubate its eggs. Meanwhile,
an Archaeopteryx, the oldest known bird, is
perched upon a boulder calling out to visitors
as they walk by and the devilish Velociraptor
known for attacking prey far larger than he is
on hand as well. Workshops and interactive
games and exhibits round out the offerings.

Gazing into a Gallery
It is a world where one comes upon paintings by Alfred Sisley, Sonia Delaunay and Alexander
Calder, statues by Rodin and drawings from Dali. The Helene Bailly Gallery has opened up
new doors on the Right Bank, extending over the river from the already established venue
on the Quai Voltaire, showcasing museum-quality modern and contemporary masterpieces.
The new gallery brings together myriad works by the masters with the aim of rendering
the fundamental art movements of the 20th century accessible. “It is essential to illuminate
creation today through the modern masters that opened up the way for it, to highlight the
connections, to emphasise the parallels, to reveal the consistencies and to faithfully transmit
the vibrations that these works reveal,” explains the gallery’s owner Hélène Bailly Marcilhac.
For the gallery’s opening exhibition entitled The Great Masters from Impressionism to the
Present and running until the end of February she is presenting an impressive array of major
works by Cassatt, Renoir, Picasso and ever so many others in the luminous two-floor space.

A World within a World
It is a dainty and elegant world that is nestled inside the Castle of Fontainebleau. The superb Musée Chinois, the Chinese
museum, and connecting rooms were built for the Empress Eugénie in 1863 to house her ﬁne collection of Far Eastern
treasures. The four rooms on the ground ﬂoor of the castle’s Gros Pavillon comprise an antechamber, a salon-gallery, a grand
salon and the museum. With its white and green jade and rock crystal objects, porcelains, bronzes, glimmering gilded
dragons and a jewel-encrusted stupa ensconced between two gigantic elephant tusks, the jewel-box of a museum is a feast
for the eyes. While some of the pieces were acquired from the imperial depository, mainly revolutionary plunder, Napoleon III
and his Empress acquired others from the Summer Palace in Beijing after its sack by French expeditionary forces in 1860. The
collection also includes diplomatic gifts from the Ambassador of Siam who actually visited Fontainebleau in 1861.
