Champagne’s sparkling bubbles set it apart from any other

festivities and celebration. Here we bring you our favourite five
spots in the French capital to enjoy a glass of the famous
French drink.
It’s been 12 years now since the Radisson opened the very first
champagne bar in Paris. The Radisson Blu Le Dokhan’s serves
no less than 50 different Champagnes in an elegant Baroque
setting. From rare vintages to offerings from little-known
producers selected by the head sommelier, this place is ideal for
your champagne time toasts.
The Mandarin Oriental’s Bar 8 offers a memorable champagne
time, which begins as you enter through the hotel’s majestic
hall. Seven Champagnes by the glass are offered on the bar
menu including Bollinger’s Spéciale Cuvée and a Dom Pérignon
2002. The pink Champagnes by the glass are from the houses of
Duval Leroy, Bollinger and Laurent-Perrier, and a fine selection
of no less than 45 Champagnes, including 14 pink Champagnes
(a genuine champagne cellar selection), by the bottle awaits
including the “S” de Salon Blanc de Blancs 1999, a Krug vintage
1998 and a Cristal Roederer 2004.

Looking for champagne time with a view? The Grand
Palais has never been grander for within you will find one
of the chicest of Parisian rendezvous, the Mini Palais bar
& restaurant. It is a delicious moment inside or outside
in the sunlight or moonlight for a meal with a glass of
champagne. The menu includes several Veuve Clicquots,
including the 2004 vintage rosé and a superb Dom
Pérignon rosé, 2000.
Meanwhile, excellent champagne shopping can be found
at Dilettantes. This wine cellar is devoted exclusively
to Champagne with over 125 different kinds on offer,
selected by Fanny Heucq, the daughter of a Champagne
wine grower. Tastings are also organised.
And through an elegant shop window focusing on the
luxurious world of Champagne, visitors are invited into the
Boutique Champagne Arlaux. The boutique carries the full
range of the fine champagnes made by the Arlaux family
whose vineyards are found on the mountain of Reims, one
of the region’s finest growing districts. Private tastings with
an interpreter can be organised.

shirt-maker, the house of Emanuel Berg
aims to offer its clients the best expertise in
shirt tailoring. In the spacious and elegantly
designed new boutique both ladies and
gentlemen will find a plethora of shirts to
choose from, whether off-the-rack or bespoke,
the perfect shirt awaits here.
Clients can choose from a selection of 1000
different fabrics, 60 different collar styles and
35 different cuffs to create their bespoke shirt.
Tailored from mostly Italian fabrics including
Albini and Thomas Mason, the shirts are put
together in Poland and are delivered within a
fortnight.
The family-run fashion house also offers
elegant accessories complementing the
tailored shirts, including chic cufflinks, socks
and beautiful headscarves for the ladies.
Monograms in different fonts and colours
can also be subtly embroidered into the
shirts, adding an even more personalised
touch to the shirts.

Big cities for the energy, but it reminds me of

In Paris, a fine place for luxury chocolates is
Debauve & Gallais, chocolate makers to the
kings of France and the oldest chocolate house
in Paris, which was founded in 1800. Sulpice
Debauve, pharmacist of King Louis XVI, opened
with his nephew, Mr. Gallais, a chocolate
factory whose quickly rising fame made it the
appointed supplier of the kings Louis XVIII,
Charles X and Louis-Philippe and the house has
remained in the same family since then.
The house’s establishments are where the
genuine lovers of true French dark chocolate
rendezvous. The Left Bank shop opened in
1819 and is inscribed on the French Historic
Monument List, while the Right Bank boutique
is doted with a Louis XVI style. Debauve &
Gallais grind and blend themselves the fine
beans that go into their chocolates, obtaining
different strengths of cacao, reaching even 99
percent in some chocolates. They were the first
to grind beans using a white marble grinder
of their own making and won gold medals at
International Expositions going back to 1878,
1889 and 1900.
For over two centuries the house of Debauve
& Gallais has been offering recipes that they
have remained faithful to throughout their
history. And today the house offers more than
40 varieties of chocolate including a delicious
raspberry ganache that offers a unique gourmet
moment while the succulent truffles are made
with a specially blended dark chocolate. With
over 200 recipes, the savoir-faire of the house
resides in the blending of chocolates from
different origins and once they arrive in France
they are tested and tasted to obtain the perfect
mélange.
Perpetuating a tradition of chocolates for
health, rich in cocoa content, the know-how
has been handed down from generation to
generation and is currently in the care of Paule
Cuvelier. And renewing with its 19th century
origins, the house, with a tea master, is now
blending again its own line of fine teas.

The Palais Galliera, the fashion museum of the city of Paris, re-opened its doors last September 28 revealing its newly renovated
galleries and honouring the designer Azzedine Alaïa with its opening show that will be running through to January 26. The
exhibition, the first Paris retrospective devoted to the designer, showcases seventy of his iconic models, retracing a unique creative
career. The designer, whose singular, wearable clothes feature jersey and stretch fabrics, presented his first signature collection in
1979 but before that his made-to-measure garments graced legendary figures like Louise de Vilmorin, Arletty and Greta Garbo.
“When I’m working on a garment, it has to flow over the body, in profile and in back view”, explains the designer who is among
the couturiers that master every step in the making of a garment, from drawing the pattern to cutting and sewing the fabric into a
magical outfit. The show is being presented at the Palais Galliera and in the Matisse Room at the nearby Musée d’Art Moderne. – P.V.

A bracelet of bronze covered in silver, dragon brooches and
a geometric amphora dating from 8th century B.C. are all
remarkable in their refinement and are all rendered in great style.
These are just a few of the 250 works and objects of the Etruscan
Civilisation being showcased in an exhibition at the Musée Maillol.
These ancient people, seafarers and traders by tradition, evolved in

the 9th and 2nd centuries before Christ on the Italian peninsula.
Widely known for their highly developed funerary arts, this

BEING BILAL
Works of art depicting human passions,
hybrid monsters and machine dreams
are all being played out in the exhibition
Mécanhumanimal at the Musée des Arts
et Métiers, the city’s museum devoted to
science. The show offers an encounter
between the visionary, multi-media artist Enki
Bilal and an exceptional space filled with a
unique collection engendering a fabulous,
thought-provoking dialogue between his
creations and the objects of the museum.
The artist’s prophetic visions are juxtaposed
with the museum’s permanent displays of
inventions and scientific instruments. Rarely
exposed objects are on display alongside the
artist’s extraordinary creations from the 1970s
to the present, inviting the visitor to explore
the relationship between man, animals and
machines. The unique experience is further
enhanced by 3D and touch image displays
conceived by Dassault Systèmes and Alain

ETRUSCANS OF ETERNITY
Captivating Claudel
Remarkable and rare are the works of the sculptress
Camille Claudel that the Musée Rodin has brought out of
its reserves for an exceptional exhibition commemorating
the 70th anniversary of the great artist’s death. Some 20
pieces given to the museum by her brother, the writer
Paul Claudel, and pieces purchased by the institution are
being shown for just three weeks in October. Student,
collaborator, mistress and muse to Auguste Rodin, Camille
Claudel remained with the artist for 10 years with the final
break in the tumultuous relationship coming in 1892.
Claudel embarked on forging her own creative identity
experimenting with familiar scenes like a couple simply
waltzing. Through her subjects she captured and rendered
in diverse materials brief moments from everyday life as
exemplified in her work Les Causeuses (The Talkers), which
was sculpted in the difficult material, marble onyx. – P.V.

Exchanging with the Arts at
Art Elysées
B
oth prestigious and emerging galleries
are present providing an exceptional
blend of works, bringing the abstract,
the surreal, the figurative, the pop and
the narrative in paintings, collages, sculptures
and photographs to the Champs-Elysées. The
venue enables collectors, enlightened amateurs
and visitors, both the passionate and the
curious about art, to intermingle and discover
fine art galleries featuring modern and classic
contemporary art. The galleries are chosen by
a committee presided over by Baudoin Lebon,
gallery owner and key figure on the Parisian art
scene. “We ask that the galleries come and be
what they are, to show what they would normally
show”, said Mr. Lebon.
This year a special accent is being placed on
geometric abstraction with the works on show
being colourful, qualitative and highly varied.
The presentations succeed one another in the
pavilions enabling the visitor to come into close
contact with the works on display. Step into a
strong world of figurative art at the AD Galerie,
which presents works by Hervé Di Rosa, Robert
Combas and Peter Klasen while the Cannes-based
Galerie Hurtebize is showcasing 20th century
French masters like Bernard Buffet, Fernand
Léger and Raoul Dufy. Meanwhile, the world of
Pop Art emerges with the Taglialatella Galleries,
which presents masters in the genre with Warhol,
Haring and Basquiat and nature-inspired works
by contemporary masters like Claude Mollard and
Kolb are being featured by the Galerie Capazza.
A highlight of this year’s show is a collaboration
with Young International Artists, which is showing
the works of 60 young artists in galleries in the
Marais neighbourhood. Shuttles are slated to link
the two venues.
And like every year, Art Elysées is hosting an
exhibition in the Champs-Elysées pavilions with
this season being devoted to the French sculptor
Christian Renonciat whose works feature wood.
Meanwhile, a show devoted exclusively to
design, Design Elysées, with about a dozen
exhibitors is being held alongside Art Elysées over
the same dates. Cutting edge design, furniture
and objects of the 20th century are presented
by the participating galleries whereby collectors
and design enthusiasts will find superb pieces by
Charlotte Perriand, Maria Pergay and Jean Prouvé
among an array of other designers. Design Elysées
is also hosting an exhibition devoted to Michel
Deverne whose sculptural works bridging art and
architecture often grace urban spaces like his
emblematic mosaic at La Défense.

Elysées show. The ephemeral event is being held for the seventh

As the autumn art scene in Paris heads into full swing, the Compagnie des Bateaux-
Mouches® is organising a singular art show, Le Salon des Indomptables, in which
