This document discusses conventions used in magazine cover design. It describes how a figure was cut out from the background and overlaid on a banner headline to draw emphasis and suggest power. It also discusses further developing this by extracting a hand and hammer from an image and overlaying it to give the impression it is reaching out toward the viewer. Additionally, it addresses using the left third of the cover to catch the consumer's eye on the shelf and include magazine content information.
