The Republic of Macedonia is a country in Southeast Europe located in the Balkan peninsula. It declared independence in 1991 after the breakup of Yugoslavia and its capital and largest city is Skopje. The majority of Macedonians speak Macedonian, a South Slavic language, as their first language. The national flag depicts a yellow sun on a red field and the majority of Macedonians belong to the Macedonian Orthodox Church. Macedonian culture is characterized by folk dances like the Kopačka and cultural events include music, poetry, and film festivals. Macedonian cuisine has Mediterranean and Middle Eastern influences and features local vegetables, dairy products, and dishes.
