Home- School Approach: Linkage Assessment
of Students Competency
with the Aid of a Home Study Guide in
Technology and Livelihood Education (TLE)
for Grade 10 Students of Nabua National High School
Researcher: Priscilla Mutya
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
DepEd, through the External Partnerships Service (EPS), provided strategies
and best practices for parents to improve home learning experience with Filipino
learners through an orientation on the Parents’ Role for a Better Learning at Home.
It highlighted that parents play a vital role in the success of the learners not only in
the lessons they learn from the teachers, but also in the guidance to nurture
holistically developed individuals. This has been very successful and useful during
the past years of the health crisis when there is absence of in- persons classes and
learners are mentored by more knowledgeable others in their respective homes.
PURPOSE OF THE STUDY
This study will be having a comparative assessment of the results of hands-
on activities and tasks in the pre- implementation stage to post- implementation
of the home study guide. The result of the tasks and activities with proper
instructions and rubrics will determine whether there is impact and good result
which will be basis for policy recommendation and adoption or acceptance of
the instructional material. The home study guide in TLE will provide activities in
TLE 10 for Grade 10 students with clear instructions for the tasks and activities
to ensure that the assistance in homes will be able to follow.

School Administrators. The result of the study will provide basic guidelines for the
administrators, as well as supervisors to craft a responsive action and implementation
plan for optimum development of the students which can also be suggested to other
schools on how the identified Most Essential Learning Competencies can be taught with
linkages. Relative to this, significant findings may give them insights of the TLE programs
so that they can devise measures that will help improve the competency of teachers in the
subject area and particular topics.
School Heads. As the strength and backbone of the organization, the school leaders
will be motivated to initiate programs and projects beneficial to learning and teaching with
proper budgeting of work through observing responsive program and projects that
address the needs of the students and teachers.
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
Parents and Community. The result of the study will serve as their
springboard in supporting their children to have more access to modern
resources in order to improve their child’s academic performance. This will
also educate them to provide a more liberating and progressive parenthood
for their children to have more academic support.
Future Researchers. The result of this study could serve as competency
in education that could be a future reference. Likewise, this provided advance
information about the level of competencies of learners and be able to
suggest a scheme for improving Most Essential Learning Competencies in
Technology and Livelihood Education (TLE), thus, providing a better
understanding of related problems.
DEFINITION OF TERMS
The following terms are operationally defined to attain clarity on the discussion of this study,
to wit:
Competency Assessment. It measures how (behaviors) someone does the what (task or
skill). The individual's selected proficiency level is then compared with the target level, defining
proficiency or skill gaps for each task and skill. Through the use of the GABAYS manual, proper
alignment based from the competencies and aptitude of the learner will be the recommended field
of specialization.
Cookery. This consists of competencies that a person. must achieve to clean kitchen areas,
prepare hot, cold meals and desserts for guests. in various food and beverage service facilities.
Curriculum Guide (CG). It is a listing of expected outcomes in Technology and Livelihood
Education for all levels of the learners. This outcome includes the content and performance
standards as bases of the TLE framework.
DEFINITION OF TERMS
Effectiveness. It refers to the significant difference between the competencies
developed in the experimental and control groups.
Field of Specialization. may be a course of study or major at an academic
institution, or may refer to the field in which a specialist practices. In the case of an
educator, academic specialization pertains to the subject that they specialize in and
teach.
Home- School Approach. Home-school partnerships involve teachers finding
opportunities for students and/or families to share knowledge and skills gained through
home and family experiences. Teachers use students' home experiences to devise
meaningful and relevant learning activities. In the present study, it talks on
acknowledging the advantages of having assistance from more knowledgeable others
(mko) in homes to master skills in TLE specifically in cookery
DEFINITION OF TERMS
Linkages. It focuses on the ideal that classroom activities are meaningfully linked to
the experiences and aspirations of the students in their homes and communities. This is
the approach that will be used in mastering the skills or competencies identified for the
TLE.
Most Essential Learning Competencies. These are defined as what the students
need, considered indispensable, in the teaching-learning process to build skills to equip
learners for subsequent grade levels and subsequently, for lifelong learning. In this study,
it will focus on the Quarter 2 MELC of Grade 10 Technology and Livelihood Education
which are competencies in cookery and the focus topic is Vegetable dishes.
More Knowledgeable Other. This is anyone who has a better understanding or a
higher ability level than the learner, particularly in regards to a specific task, concept or
process. Traditionally the MKO is thought of as a teacher or an older adult.
DEFINITION OF TERMS
Practical Approach in Teaching. It is a form of instruction that promotes hands-on
learning, real-world application, and problem solving. It entails going beyond theoretical
principles and immersing students in hands-on activities that allow them to actively participate
in, investigate, and experience the subject matter.
Strategic Intervention Material. It is an instructional material for remediation purposes
is one of the solutions employed by the Department of Education (DepEd) to enhance
academic achievements of students performing low in the field of science and technology.
Technology and Livelihood Education. It is a learning area for students embedded in
the K to 12 Curriculum which focuses on the development of one’s knowledge, skills and
attitudes.
Vegetable Dishes. It is a main or side meal that stars a variety of vegetables, which have
been prepared through various cooking methods. They are typically laden with essential
vitamins and minerals necessary for healthy living.
