Fiction is a form of narrative, one of the four rhetorical modes of discourse. Fiction-writing also has modes for fiction-writing: action, exposition, description, dialogue, summary, and transition (Morrell 2006, p. 127). Author Peter Selgin refers to methods, including action, dialogue, thoughts, summary, scene, and description (Selgin 2007, p. 38). Currently, there is no consensus within the writing community regarding the number and composition of fiction-writing modes and their uses.
Description is the fiction-writing mode for transmitting a mental image of the particulars of a story. Together with dialogue, narration, exposition, and summarization, description is one of the most widely recognized of the fiction-writing modes. As stated in Writing from A to Z, edited by Kirk Polking, description is more than the amassing of details; it is bringing something to life by carefully choosing and arranging words and phrases to produce the desired effect (Polking 1990, p. 106). Increasingly considered as a viable and cost-effective source of renewable energy, PV systems now range from commercial and residential, to large scale power generation at solar parks, etc.
Partial lightning currents can enter the PV system following a direct lightning strike to the external lightning protection system (LPS), or via transient overvoltages from the wider electrical network.
Effective protection against partial lightning currents can be achieved through installation of surge protection devices (SPD's), on both the DC and AC sides of the DC-AC Inverter.

A tale of scale & speed: How the US Navy is enabling software delivery from l...sonjaschweigert1
Rapid and secure feature delivery is a goal across every application team and every branch of the DoD. The Navy’s DevSecOps platform, Party Barge, has achieved:
- Reduction in onboarding time from 5 weeks to 1 day
- Improved developer experience and productivity through actionable findings and reduction of false positives
- Maintenance of superior security standards and inherent policy enforcement with Authorization to Operate (ATO)
Development teams can ship efficiently and ensure applications are cyber ready for Navy Authorizing Officials (AOs). In this webinar, Sigma Defense and Anchore will give attendees a look behind the scenes and demo secure pipeline automation and security artifacts that speed up application ATO and time to production.
We will cover:
- How to remove silos in DevSecOps
- How to build efficient development pipeline roles and component templates
- How to deliver security artifacts that matter for ATO’s (SBOMs, vulnerability reports, and policy evidence)
- How to streamline operations with automated policy checks on container images

Climate Impact of Software Testing at Nordic Testing DaysKari Kakkonen
My slides at Nordic Testing Days 6.6.2024
Climate impact / sustainability of software testing discussed on the talk. ICT and testing must carry their part of global responsibility to help with the climat warming. We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.
Securing your Kubernetes cluster_ a step-by-step guide to success !KatiaHIMEUR1
Today, after several years of existence, an extremely active community and an ultra-dynamic ecosystem, Kubernetes has established itself as the de facto standard in container orchestration. Thanks to a wide range of managed services, it has never been so easy to set up a ready-to-use Kubernetes cluster.
However, this ease of use means that the subject of security in Kubernetes is often left for later, or even neglected. This exposes companies to significant risks.
In this talk, I'll show you step-by-step how to secure your Kubernetes cluster for greater peace of mind and reliability.

PHP Frameworks: I want to break free (IPC Berlin 2024)Ralf Eggert
In this presentation, we examine the challenges and limitations of relying too heavily on PHP frameworks in web development. We discuss the history of PHP and its frameworks to understand how this dependence has evolved. The focus will be on providing concrete tips and strategies to reduce reliance on these frameworks, based on real-world examples and practical considerations. The goal is to equip developers with the skills and knowledge to create more flexible and future-proof web applications. We'll explore the importance of maintaining autonomy in a rapidly changing tech landscape and how to make informed decisions in PHP development.
This talk is aimed at encouraging a more independent approach to using PHP frameworks, moving towards a more flexible and future-proof approach to PHP development.

STEP 1: Turn off the power
As stated previously, turn off the power.
Locate latches on the lens frame and release
them allowing lens frame to swing open.
Carefully let lens frame hang and remove if
obstructing upgrade.
STEP 2: REMOVE THE TUBES
Remove the existing linear fluorescent tubes
and properly dispose of them. See Figure 2.
NOTE: Please seek advice from the EPA at
their website, local office, or national hotline
for further disposal details for fluorescent
tubes. The EPA's website is www.EPA.gov
STEP 3: REMOVE BALLAST COVER
To remove the wiring and ballast cover, squeeze the
sides in and pull down and set aside. See Figure 3.
STEP 4: UNSCREW BALLAST
Find the existing ballast and remove the screw
holding the ballast to the fixture. See Figure 4.
STEP 5: REMOVE LEADS & BALLAST
Now remove the ballast from the fixture by cutting
the leads from the ballast to the fixture on both
ends of the luminaire and cap the socket leads.
See Figure 5.
NOTE: When cutting leads to the fixture, always
leave the smallest amount of wire attached.

STEP 6: CUT POWER LEADS
Cut or disconnect the leads from the ballast to
the input power ensuring that you leave as
much length of wire as possible for the
electrical connections. Remove the ballast from
housing and dispose of properly. See Figure 6
STEP 7: PREP WIRES
Prepare input power by stripping input power
leads ¼ inch. See Figure 7
STEP 8 / 8A: STRIP & ATTACH TO DRIVER
Prepare input power by stripping input power leads ¼
inch. Connect driver to input leads.
See Figure 8 / 8A.
STEP 9: ATTACH DRIVER
Bring new driver into fixture using mounting holes
from old ballast if possible and secure it using
supplied #8-32 screw. See Figure 9.
NOTE: If housing has multiple locations for power
supply, new driver can be secured in any of these
locations.
STEP 10: Connect Driver to input power
Make electrical connection per “Electrical
Connections” persection on page 4.
STEP 11: ATTACH DRIVER COVER
Bring wiring / driver (ballast) cover previously
removed in Step 3 into the fixture. Carefully
tuck all leads and wire connectors into the wire
