Charles "Lucky" Luciano was an influential Italian-American gangster who modernized organized crime in the United States during the 1920s-1940s. He rose to power in New York by allying with other crime bosses and orchestrating the murder of his rivals. Luciano reorganized the mafia into "The Commission" with representative crime families and oversaw lucrative criminal rackets. However, he was eventually convicted of running a prostitution ring and sentenced to prison, though he was later deported to Italy in exchange for helping the US government during World War 2. Luciano continued trying to exert control over criminal operations from abroad but was unable to fully resume power in the US.
