Our co-founder, Ben Dilts, created Lucidchart to
solve the pain points of collaboration, version con-
trol, and information security that he experienced
as an engineer. Because Ben led the development
of a health benefits software, he dealt with strict se-
curity requirements imposed by HIPAA and other
legislation. To ensure compliance, his team emailed
Visio diagrams back and forth as they planned the
software but, as a result, had a difficult time keep-
ing track of the most up-to-date version.
Unsurprisingly, Ben was frustrated by the inefficien-
cy of this process. He wanted a simple diagram-
ming tool that allowed multiple people to collab-
orate simultaneously and cost less than Visio. He
wanted a solution that didn’t yet exist.
So he built it himself.

1 Create an IAM user or upload the results of our
CLI script to connect Lucidchart with AWS.
2 Lucidchart queries the AWS console for a
description of your infrastructure and net-
working rules—it never actually touches your
infrastructure.
3 Lucidchart imports your data, including the ap-
propriate shape type and name, relationships
between components, and metadata.
4 To draw a network, simply drag the desired
components to the canvas and click a node to
reveal all of its connected components.
