What is Doo Wop?

Typical instruments included the double bass, electric guitar, saxophone, drums, and piano. Doo wop emerged from African American communities in cities like New York, Philadelphia, and Los Angeles. Popular doo wop artists included The Clovers, The Coasters, The Drifters, and The Flamingos. African Roots of Popular Music

Jazz - A Brief History
Jazz originated in the late 1800s as slaves from Africa began playing instruments and singing, forming the first style called ragtime. In the early 1900s, small bands formed and played jazz music in black communities, popularizing dixieland jazz. In the 1930s, big bands became popular and broadcast on the radio, known as swing music which was popular for dancing. Bebop emerged in the 1940s-50s as a faster, more dissonant style for musicians. Modal jazz in the late 1950s was based on musical modes while free jazz in the early 1960s removed tonality and structure. Fusion in the late 1960s blended rock and jazz using electric instruments.
George Gershwin
George Gershwin was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1898 to a family of Russian Jewish immigrants. He showed a talent for music from a young age, studying piano seriously from age 12. After quitting high school, he worked as a song plugger but soon turned to composing Broadway musicals, partnering with lyricist Ira Gershwin, his brother. Some of his most famous works include "Rhapsody in Blue," "An American in Paris," and "Porgy and Bess." Gershwin struggled to gain respect as a serious composer but saw great popular and financial success. His promising career was cut short when he died of a brain tumor at the young age of 38 in 1937.

Johann Sebastian Bach was a German composer and musician born in 1685 who lived during the Baroque period. He came from a family with many generations of composers and musicians. Bach held several musical director positions throughout Germany, composing pieces for the Lutheran church such as his Mass in B Minor. He composed in complex counterpoint and fugue styles and is considered one of the greatest composers of all time, having written works including the Brandenburg Concertos, Toccata and Fugue in D Minor, and Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring. Bach went blind late in life and died in 1750.

African Roots of Popular Music

Jazz - A Brief History

George Gershwin
George Gershwin was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1898 to a family of Russian Jewish immigrants. He showed a talent for music from a young age, studying piano seriously from age 12. After quitting high school, he worked as a song plugger but soon turned to composing Broadway musicals, partnering with lyricist Ira Gershwin, his brother. Some of his most famous works include "Rhapsody in Blue," "An American in Paris," and "Porgy and Bess." Gershwin struggled to gain respect as a serious composer but saw great popular and financial success. His promising career was cut short when he died of a brain tumor at the young age of 38 in 1937.
