Love & Logic  In Middle School and Junior High
Student: We get to chew gum in other classes. Teacher: I'm sure that is true. But what is the rule in this classroom. Student: But that's not fair. Teacher: I know, but what is the rule in this classroom.
Nearly every one of us has been in the situation on the previous page. Inconsistent rules can lead to unnecessary debates with students.
What Love & Logic teaches us is that no matter what the rules are in each classroom the message is the same.
Rules and expectations change in different situations but respecting yourself, your peers and your teacher are always a rule.
So how do we do this?
Empowering beliefs are beliefs based on developing an internalized sense of control in kids, rather than trying to control them with rewards and punsihments.
The Core Beliefs   • Be responsible for owning and solving their own problems.  • Do more thinking than the adults.  • Face logical consequences inserted of punishment whenever possible.  • Learn to make a connection between their infraction and the action taken.
The Core Beliefs   • Learn to make decisions and then live with the consequences.  • Be able to take control over their lives and yet have school retain control  • See adults as helpers, rather than judges who dole out punishments.  • Learn in their school that problems are an opportunity for personal growth.
Examples to teach from: Social Justice, The Beatitudes & Social Responsibility
Core Belief + Misbehavior = What Action?
Every time I interact with a student, I'm going to let empathy and logical consequences do the teaching, instead of anger, blame and guilt.
What does this look like?
Student: This assignment is stupid, I am not going to do it. Teacher: You will receive points when the work is complete. Student: Well it's stupid. Teacher: You are entitled to that opinion, however you will receive credit when the work is complete.
A wise person once said, fair is not always equal and equal is not always fair.
Consistency comes, not from trying to force everybody to do the same thing at the same time - but by living by a set of core beliefs.
