According to a poll, LoRaWAN became the leader in adding the most number of devices and sensors globally outside of China in 2023. The Onmia report expects NB-IoT to have the largest number of devices deployed in 2023, however LoRaWAN is expected to see the largest growth given most NB-IoT devices are currently in China and Asia. While LTE-M saw strong growth in 2022 in Europe and North America, LoRaWAN's long range, low power consumption, low cost, and large ecosystem of providers means it will continue to do well and be widely adopted for various applications in 170 countries.

This paper provides an analysis of LPWA underlying technology in licensed and unlicensed spectrum by means of literature review and comparative assessment of Sigfox, LoRa, NB-IoT and LTE-M. We review their technical aspect and discussed the pros and cons in terms of their technical and other deployment features. General IoT application requirements is also presented and linked to the deployment factors to give an insight of how different applications profiles is associated to the right technology platform, thus provide a simple guideline on how to match a specific application profile with the best fit connectivity features.

ITU Approves LoRaWAN as Global IoT Standard
Congrats on the LoRaWAN as a global IoT standard that was approved by ITU.
The LoRa Alliance, which works to promote the LoRaWAN standard for Low Power Wide Area Networks (LPWAN), said the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has approved the LoRaWAN as global IoT standard technology, Capacitymedia reported on 7 December.
Donna Moore, CEO and chair of the LoRa Alliance, said, "We worked together with the ITU-t (ITU's telecoms standards division) to get the independent body to officially classify LoRaWAN as global IoT standard, an international standard."

We will also provide a use case of deploying a wireless LoRa infrastructure that supports various indoor and outdoor services for the citizens of future Smart Cities.
Whitepaper - How to build a mutil-technology scalable IoT Connectivity Platform?
In this paper, we investigate the challenges facing service providers and enterprises for deploying and monetizing LPWAN solution.
We show in this paper that the traditional M2M approach might not be cost-effective for the needs of LPWAN IoT deployments due to dramatically lower ARPU requirements of IoT compared to traditional M2M. We also examine both cellular IoT (NB-IoT or Cat-NB1, Cat-M1, Cat-1) and LoRaWAN, with the objective to demonstrate the complementary aspects of the two technologies. We show how operators extend existing M2M use cases and swap 2G using cellular IoT, and in addition tap into the new unlicensed IoT market space using LoRaWAN. Interestingly, LoRaWAN is a natural over-the-top play for cellular IoT operators, as cellular IoT is an ideal backhaul technology for unlicensed LPWAN concentrators.
Properly matching a connectivity solution to a use case is a complex multidimensional problem requiring analysis of several factors including battery lifetime, coverage, throughput, latency, total cost of ownership (TCO), amongst other factors. We discuss these factors and attempt to build a technology selection chart, and then build a business case for multi-technology IoT platform that leverages both LoRaWAN and Cellular IoT to serve the needs of all IoT use cases. We also provide insights on the service provider strategy for LPWAN deployment with examples from Tier-1 MNOs such as SK Telecom and Orange.
Finally, we conclude the paper with overview of ThingPark Wireless as a multi-technology platform that addresses the challenges for both LoRaWAN and Cellular IoT deployments.

If I were to suggest one takeaway from all of the articles included in this issue, I would say it is speed. Device processing is getting faster, data speeds are constantly increasing and radio speeds are approaching those of fiber. More people are becoming subscribers, more things are becoming connected and more applications are running constantly. Developers of new technologies are working hard to enhance responsiveness by reducing latency, a key performance parameter. The capability to determine which functions can be virtualized to maximize ideal placement in the network and ensure low latency is one of the primary driving factors behind the proposed split of radio-access architecture discussed in this issue.

The latest issue of Ericsson Technology Review covers a wide range of topics including narrowband Internet of Things, the next-generation central office, telco-grade platform as a service, 4G/5G RAN architecture, and cloud robotics enabled by 5G. The feature story – Five trends shaping innovation in ICT – presents what I consider to be the major technology trends that will stimulate innovation in the coming year. Do you agree with me? I’d love to hear from you with any feedback you might have.
If I were to suggest one takeaway from all of the articles included in this issue, I would say it is speed. Device processing is getting faster, data speeds are constantly increasing and radio speeds are approaching those of fiber. More people are becoming subscribers, more things are becoming connected and more applications are running constantly. Developers of new technologies are working hard to enhance responsiveness by reducing latency, a key performance parameter. The capability to determine which functions can be virtualized to maximize ideal placement in the network and ensure low latency is one of the primary driving factors behind the proposed split of radio-access architecture discussed in this issue.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).

Summing up the results of our poll, “What LPWAN IOT technology will add the most number of devices and sensors in 2023 outside of China?” with a great advantage, the LoRaWAN network became the leader. What LPWAN IOT technology will add the most number of devices and sensors in 2023 outside of China?
- 2. According to the Onmia report, the NB-IoT is expected to have the largest number of devices deployed in 2023. However, given that most NB-IoT devices are still deployed in China (and smaller markets in Asia, the Middle East, and Europe), one could assume LoRaWAN will see the largest number of devices deployed in 2023. Nevertheless, during 2022, LTE-M experienced strong growth in Europe and North America, and according to many reports, LTE-M and 5G IoT growth will continue well into 2027. Given the vast global cellular market, LTE-M, NB-IoT, and 5G IoT are expected to gain significant LPWAN market share over time. Due to its long range, lowpower consumption, lowcost, and large ecosystem of solution providers, LoRaWAN has doneverywelland is expected to continue to do so forthe foreseeable future.Today, it is widely adopted in 170 countries for utility, asset tracking, logistics, smart cities, agriculture, and industry applications. The other main differentiator is the fact that LoRaWAN is well-suited for both public and private networks, whereas SigFox, NB-IoT, and CAT-M are only suited for public networks, which significantly limits the number of deployments and use cases they support. In conclusion, it is difficult to pick the winner in this race because LoRaWAN, NB-IoT, and LTE-M are gaining momentum. However, one thing is for certain: Sigfox is not expected to deploy a lot of devices, and with their adoption of LoRaWAN, one would expect it to hamper their network growth in the future.
