The document reflects on the growth the student has experienced in planning and executing film projects from their preliminary task to their full film project called "Insomnia". For the preliminary task, they had only 1-2 weeks to plan with limited resources and shot options. They have since learned how important planning, costuming, shot composition, audio, and storyboarding are to effectively communicate meaning. Their skills in editing, setting tone through lighting and color, and overall production quality have improved substantially. The student recognizes how far they have come and hopes to continue progressing in their filmmaking abilities.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

Looking back on your preliminary task what do you feel you have learnt in the progression of it from the full project
1. Looking back on your preliminary task what do you feel you have learnt in
the progression of it from the full project
When we first started Media in September it was confusing because there was more
technical knowledge than last year. When we were planning our preliminary task we didn’t
have as much time as with our 2 minute sequence.
In the preliminary task we had about 1 or 2 weeks to plan the recording and with this we
could only use costumes sourced in school such as the doctors coat and the hospital gown
and the clipboard used in the sequence was also supplied by the our Media teacher. Now I
can see just how far we have come when sourcing our props. As with our film we took the
time to plan our characters and what they would be wearing on the day of the shoot and we
also looked at which props create a better meaning in this project. This gave me a deeper
understanding of how props can be used to make the scene work or establish how the story
will play out.
With regards to the costumes again we only had a week to plan this and we had to source
our costumes from our Media teacher or from around the school because the hospital gown
was sourced from our Media teacher and the doctors coat was given to us by a science
technician. From the preliminary project I have learned how important it is to plan the
characters thoroughly can consider what they would wear and how it would establish their
character and make the scene work better, this is clear as in Insomnia Vanessa is in a red top
this shows that she is loving and still cares about her parents even though they are not
around and the woolly coat suggests that she is soft and can easily be hurt. And with regards
to Sam he is in a leather coat and black jeans this shows that he is a very intense and
mysterious character and because the leather makes him seemso hard hitting he is seen as
the dominant one.
When we considered positioning of characters within a frame, in the preliminary project I
was lying on a bed with Molly standing over me and the low angle shot of me showed I was
a weak character who is not able to do anything. And in Insomnia Vanessa is seen as the
weak character because she is low to the ground and has a number of low angle shots on
her to make her appear weak, whereas with Sam there are shots of me standing to show he
has higher power and is more dominant and stronger than Vanessa this also shows I am
strong because of the close ups. In the preliminary task some of Molly’s head was cut off
and the camera was moving too fast whereas with Insomnia the camera showed steady
movement and this shows how we have developed with our camera work.
We have also improved in our ability to edit footage as we have a better understanding of
how to cut and replace footage and with this we know to get as many shots as possible in
order to break it up more. As well as this we even understand about having a texture or
transition into the footage as the lighting and colour can set the tone of the film, in our
preliminary task we only considered using one dark tone throughout which doesn’t really
help explain much about the characters. Whereas with Insomnia the light tones were used
to show Vanessa’s innocence and show Sam to the audience more and this would make him
stand out more as the stronger character.
2. We have improved in the addition of audio as in our preliminary task the audio was not as
clear as I would have liked and you can barely hear what is being said, whereas with
Insomnia the audio was recorded again to make it sound more clear to the audience and
they can hear what is being said and they will be engaged into the production.
We also clearly thought about which shots to use because in the preliminary task we were
not able to make a storyboard and shot list as we only filmed with any shots we could make
up on the spot, as we had more time to plan we considered every shot in Insomnia and how
each shot wold create meaning for the audience with this we also made a storyboard so it
would be clear what shots we would use and how they would look along with the timing of
the shots and what would be included in the shots i.e. props and which characters.
All in all we have come a long way since then and I hope that with a little more experience
we will be able to build on what we have produced for Insomnia and hopefully we can only
move forward and look to producing something much better for our next audience.
