Status of the CMOS Image Sensor Industry 2017 - Report by Yole DeveloppementYole Developpement
New applications are transforming the market and technology playing field for CMOS image sensors
It’s ten years down the line from the initial Apple iPhone that started the smartphone era. Since then, CMOS imaging has benefited from huge market demand and a technology-driven environment, resulting in an $11.6B industry in 2016. Photography and video is the main application, which is totally transformed by new use cases, new devices and new technologies.
The mobile market is key for the CMOS image sensor (CIS) industry. Despite saturation in the number of handsets, the CIS market has been able to maintain a 10.5% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) for the 2016-2022 period due to the introduction of dual and 3D cameras. These additional cameras are changing the industry’s drivers from form factor and image quality to interactivity.
Penetration into higher added value markets such as automotive, security and medical shows that CIS products are transforming use cases across the board. CIS technology adoption allows greater automation levels at low cost, while using newly available computing architectures such as deep learning. The CMOS image sensor industry is currently in a virtuous circle where a new technology is providing true customer value.

Editor's Notes
The London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) needed a global logistics company with the scale and scope to handle such a massive logistical challenge. That’s why LOCOG chose UPS as the Official Logistics and Express Delivery Supporter of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
UPS (NYSE:UPS) is the world's largest package delivery company and a global leader in supply chain and freight services.UPS will undertake the operation of the Games Logistics and Command Centre as well as manage all of LOCOG's transportation and logistical operations, providing an integrated supply chain solution that includes venue logistics services, warehousing services and the transportation network of vans and lorries that links them. UPS will use an extensive array of technology systems within those facilities to maintain precise control of the millions of sporting items and related equipment that will be stored and processed there throughout the Games. In addition UPS will also be responsible for all customs and freight forwarding and courier services for London 2012 with a dedicated fleet of up to 120 vehicles, including electric zero-emission vehicles. UPS staffing will include more than 2,000 people for both operational and customer-facing roles.UPS will undertake the operation of the Games Logistics and Command Centre as well as manage all of LOCOG's transportation and logistical operations, providing an integrated supply chain solution that includes venue logistics services, warehousing services and the transportation network of vans and lorries that links them. UPS has officially opened two Relay Room stores onsite in the Olympic Park, offering competing athletes, team officials and the world's media direct access to UPS services during the London 2012 Games. The first UPS Relay Room, which will be staffed by a team of UPS shipping advisors, is located inside the Olympic Village. It will offer accredited athletes and team officials from 200 countries around the world access to a range of services, including a special all-inclusive outbound service covering packaging, customs advice, security clearance, carbon neutral shipping and delivery. This will enable athletes to ship items home during Games-time, as well as collect items shipped to them without having to leave the Olympic Village. The same services will also be available at a second UPS Relay Room situated on the High Street at the International Broadcast Centre/Main Press Centre Complex. Here, UPS shipping advisors will be on hand to provide customs and freight advice to international media organisations dealing with large shipments of equipment.
Warehousing Logistics for the Games is the responsibility of UPS, the official logistics partner of the Olympics, who have secured 80,000 square meters of warehousing space to accommodate the demands of getting the goods to the starting blocks. UPS has the unenviable task of literally “managing the last mile” into all the Olympic venues. Everything is processed through UPS warehouses where the inbound deliveries are unloaded and x-rayed for security purposes. Outbound shipments are planned, loaded onto vehicles and sent to one of the 37 competition venues across the UK (27 of which are in London). But what goes into the venues also needs to come out! So the Olympics reverse logistics is also a significant challenge involving retrieval return to warehouses and finally disposal. In fact, by the end of the Games UPS will have moved more than 30 million items!
As the Official Logistics and Express Delivery Supporter of the 2012 Games, UPS will be responsible for the pick-up and delivery of everything from documents to heavy freight. It will also control the operation and management of the Games Logistics and Command Centre, where all the materials associated with the Games will be inventoried, warehoused and processed. In addition, UPS will also provide logistics planning services at every point in the Olympic supply chain and all customs brokerage services to get shipments cleared through customs.Leverage a global distribution network to collect and deliver practically everything from packages and documents to heavy freightThe Logistics Coordination Centre (LCC) has been established to facilitate the movement of goods and vehicles to competition and non-competition venues. It is responsible for the movement and management of LOCOG-owned equipment and materials to and from venues. The LCC also facilitates themovement of certain non-LOCOG-owned assets. An “Olympic Route Network” has been created that is a “mass transit” network to specifically support the Olympics. London has a road network of 9200 miles. The Olympic Route Network leverages 109 miles (only 1% of the total) stretching across London, which can be used by the vast majority of vehicles (mainly buses and large vehicles). Of this, 30 miles of “Games Lanes” have been dedicated to athletes, officials and special traffic. So, by reserving 0.3% of the network for the games, it is anticipated this will actually reduce the pressure on the rest of the network and therefore make movements faster for everyone.Olympic and Paralympics Route Networks (ORN & PRN) set up. These will cover 2.6% of London’s roads and will include road and junction alterations, diversions, parking and loading restrictions as well as ‘Games Lanes’, which can only be used by athletes, officials, media and Games partners. Extra security measures may also have an impact on the transport network.
UPS today revealed its plans for the delivery of London 2012 team kit to Paralympic athletes across the UK. In this momentous logistical operation, UPS will be warehousing, packing and delivering more than 27,000 items to over 300 Paralympic athletes. The first step in the process will involve UPS warehousing all of the kit, so it can be quickly and easily picked and packed for each individual athlete, depending on their size and individual requirements. All items will then be scanned, in order to ensure maximum stock control, before being packed into kit bags ready for delivery. Each athlete will receive three official kit bags containing their competition and Village wear designed by Stella McCartney for adidas. The cases will be transported to training HQ's for each Paralympic sport around UK using innovative tracking and vehicle technology supporting UPS's broader commitment to sustainable logistics for the Games.UPS is delivering the kit well in advance of the Paralympic Games so the athletes have time to wear them and ensure they are the correct size. A UPS Swap Van will be travelling around the country in the weeks following the main delivery carrying additional stock in order to cater to any last-minute exchanges.

For UPS, the main activity will begin in January 2012 when it will start moving inventory into the site. Its first peak will be at the end of June, beginning of July, immediately before the start of the games, while during the games it will focus more on replenishment, and once the Olympics are over, things will move on to the Paralympics. However, Williams reckons the company's biggest peak will be in September 2012 when all games are over and everything has to be moved out.
