LTN has been managing a landside and airside digital signage network for more than ve years using Signagelive’s cloud-based solution. Signagelive’s CMS is used to manage content on different screen types and sizes throughout the terminal building, including check-in, the passenger link bridge and in staff areas. All deployed AV equipment has been installed by SPC Group, a leading airport ICT supplier and one of Signagelive’s UK channel partners. SPC Group is also responsible for maintaining all AV hardware.

1. The Digital Signage Network
LTN has been managing a landside
and airside digital signage network for
more than five years using Signagelive’s
cloud-based solution. Signagelive’s CMS
is used to manage content on different
screen types and sizes throughout the
terminal building, including check-in, the
passenger link bridge and in staff areas.
All deployed AV equipment has been
installed by SPC Group, a leading airport
ICT supplier and one of Signagelive’s
UK channel partners. SPC Group is
also responsible for maintaining all AV
hardware.
To take advantage of a captive audience
at check-in, over 50 LCD displays (all of
which are powered by Signagelive) have
been installed above the check-in desks
to promote airport facilities and provide a
commercial advertising opportunity. The
displayed content is managed by LTN’s
Marcomms Department and playlists
reflect factors such as the time of day and
new facilities or products available in the
departure lounge.
Planning consent has recently
been given for a £100m
development of London Luton
Airport. The work will increase
annual passenger capacity
from 12 million to 18 million by
2031 and enable London Luton
to become a leading airport,
serving those living in London,
Luton and the surrounding
regions. The plans include an
expanded and modernised
terminal building and improved
surface access.
London Luton Airport (LTN) is
the 5th largest airport in the UK.
easytJet, Wizz Air, Monarch,
Thomson, El Al, Atlasjet, Blue
Air and TAROM all operate from
the airport, serving a total of 107
destinations, including services
to Europe, Africa and Asia. LTN
handled 9.7 million passengers
in 2013.

2. Retailers and restaurants create their
respective content in accordance with
guidelines stipulated by LTN Marcomms
Department, who upload this onto
Signagelive’s cloud-based platform and
schedule and manage the content using
Signagelive’s CMS. Campaigns can be
amended or changed in real-time via any
browser, offering great flexibility.
Signagelive-powered displays have also
been deployed in the check-in area and
the departure lounge for “wayfinding”
purposes and these too can be used
to communicate urgent information to
passengers, should the need arise.
Landside and Airside Displays
LTN has installed two 3 x 2 video walls on
the link bridge between airport security
and the departure lounge to display offers
and promotions for retail and catering
partners. All departing passengers take
this route to their boarding gate, making
this a prime site for advertising.
Targeted content is scheduled to display
at predetermined intervals on the video
walls to raise awareness of onsite offers
and promotions. More than 90% of
onsite tenants have used the facility for
advertising purposes since its launch
three years ago.
If urgent information needs to be
quickly communicated to passengers,
notices can be added “on-demand”
using Signagelive’s web interface,
to ensure passengers are kept well
informed.
Digital Signage for Staff
LTN has recently installed a 2 x 2
video wall in the staff area to provide
regular updates on airport initiatives and
development plans. The video wall is
also to be used by HR to communicate
with employees who work a variety of
shift patterns.

The Future
As development plans progress, LTN
is planning to make use of some of the

restaurants.
LTN is also investigating the possibility
of integrating digital signage with other
self-service technologies to provide a
personalised experience to passengers
from check-in through to take-off.
