London has a long history dating back to its founding by the Romans in the 1st century AD. It has since been influenced by Anglo-Saxons, the Middle Ages which saw the building of cathedrals and monasteries, and the Tudor period when it became the center of government. The city suffered disasters like the Great Plague and Fire of London in the 17th century but rebuilt and expanded during the Georgian and Victorian eras. London was bombed in World War 2 but rebuilt and modernized under Queen Elizabeth II. It remains a global cultural, financial, and tourist center today.
