Berlin began as an ancient fishing village on the banks of the Spree River. In the 13th century, it was founded by Henry the Lion and Albert the Bear and became the capital of Brandenburg under Hohenzollern rule in the 15th century. Berlin further developed as the capital of Prussia in 1701 and the capital of the German Empire in 1871. In 1961, the Berlin Wall was constructed, dividing the city until its demolition began in 1989 after 28 years.
