Lohri is a winter harvest festival celebrated by Punjabis. It originated on the winter solstice and involves dancing, singing folk songs around bonfires, eating sweets, and remembering the heroic Robin Hood-like figure Dullah Bhatti who opposed the Mughal emperor Akbar. Families traditionally gather around bonfires, sing and dance together, eat sweets, and children may go door-to-door singing songs to earn money. The author's family in Canada celebrates with a Lohri party and by visiting the Gurudwara instead of lighting bonfires.
