Lean Production:
Doing more with less by employing 'lean thinking.' Lean
manufacturing involves never ending efforts to eliminate or reduce
'muda' (Japanese for waste or any activity that consumes resources
without adding value) in design, manufacturing, distribution, and
customer service processes.
A western definition of Japan Toyota’s Kanban = JIT system

JIT is a form of Lean Production:
A just-in-time system of manufacturing (= producing
goods) is based on preventing waste by producing
only the amount of goods needed at a particular
time, and not paying to produce & store more goods
than are needed.

Potential Benefits Potential Drawbacks
Lower stock holding means lower storage costs
and lower insurance costs
Little room for mistakes as minimum stock is
kept for re-working faulty products
Less working capital is tied up in the stock Production is highly reliant on suppliers and if
stock is not delivered on time, the whole
production schedule can be delayed
Less likelihood of stock perishing, becoming
obsolete or out of date
No spare finished product to meet unexpected
demand, possible loss of revenue.
Less time spent on checking and reworking
