This is a few logic puzzles that encourage deductive reasoning skills among students. I allow my students to work in groups to determine the correct responses.

2. If the following statements are all true, who killed Pam and where was Jones in 1997? Jones was either in Hong Kong or London in 1997. If Jones did not kill Pam, then Peter did it. If Pam died of suffocation, then either Jones killed her or Pam committed suicide. If Jones was in Hong Kong in 1997, then Jones did not kill Pam. Pam died of suffocation, but she did not kill herself.

3. Answer Start with statement # 5, Pam died of suffocation. This information should lead you to statement #3 next. From here you should gather that Jones killed Pam. Thus leading to statement #4, Jones was in London in 1997.

4. Four men were in a boat on the lake. The boat turns over, and all four men sink to the bottom of the lake, yet not a single man got wet! Why?

5. THEY WERE ALL MARRIED, or in a RELATIONSHIP!! NONE WERE SINGLE!!!

6. I have a 5 scoop ice cream cone. Each of my 5 scoops is a different flavor of ice cream. The five flavors are blueberry, chocolate, strawberry, vanilla and bubble gum. You don't know what order my ice cream flavors are from top to bottom.

7. However, here are some clues to see if you can figure out what flavors are from top to bottom: 1.The bottom flavor has 10 letters. 2. The vanilla scoop touches both the chocolate and blueberry scoop. 3. Vanilla is below the chocolate scoop but above the bubblegum scoop. Can you apply some logic to figure out the order of scoops by flavor?

10. Figure out the date using the clues below. The date is not a prime number. The date is not a multiple of 5. The date is not a multiple of 2. The date is divisible by 6. If you have eliminated dates correctly, you should have two possible dates left. The date of the “Mystery Math Ball: is the greater number of those two dates.

11. Use the clues to figure out the five digit house number. The house number is an even number. The product of the digits in the one’s place and the hundred’s place is 6. The sum of these two digits is 5. The digit in the ten thousand’s place is the difference between the hundred’s digit and the one’s digit. The ten’s digit is the greatest even digit. The sum of the digits in the ten thousand’s place and the thousand’s place is equal to the digit in the ten’s place.

12. The host is 16 years old and is one of the following people, whose ages range from 14- 18 years. Jill is 3 years younger than John. Jim is younger than Joe. Janet is older than Jill. Jill is not 15 years old. Jim is not the youngest person. John is the second- oldest person. Joe is 2 years younger than Janet.

14. A man was to be sentenced, and the judge told him, “You may make a statement. If it is true, I’ll sentence you to four years in prison. If it is false, I’ll sentence you to six years in prison.” After the man made his statement, the judge decided to let him go free. What did the man say?

15. “You will sentence me to six years in prison.” If the statement is true, the man gets 4 years in prison. Thus making the statement false. If the statement is false, the man gets 6 years in prison. Thus making the statement true. Continuing the cycle of constant true then false.
