Location Reece
The Homeless Man
Pros;
• The location is close to my house, meaning less time will be wasted in transport
• The location isn’t the typical place a homeless man would be found – adding to the mystical nature of the
character
• The location is rather tight – giving a claustrophobic feel to a viewer
• The natural lighting is rather bright
Cons;
• The area is tight so it will be hard to fit cast and crew in plus equipment and still get a variety of shot types
• A lighting rig wouldn’t fit, and it would be hard to record audio without a mic getting into shot
• In filming the entire path would be blocked up so it might annoy neighbours
• The location is outside meaning the whether can change and equipment can’t be plugged to the mains
Solutions;
• Keep cast and crew to a minimum, only bring essential items, utilise the length of the pathway rather than
the depth
• Film in the day when natural light can be used and fix in post production
• Offer to clear the path when approached or find an alternative route
• Check the whether forecast before filming and use battery powered equipment when possible
A
Pros;
• Open space allows plenty of room for as much cast, crew and
equipment required
• Being on the of a film allows a variety of shot types
Cons;
• The signs on the wall won’t look amazing an will need covering
• It could be unrealistic for the protagonist to be walking on the grass
• May need permission to film against the house
Solutions;
• Cover them up by strategically placing cast against them
• Use creative licence
• Ask nicely
B
Pros;
• The location is small which could make a viewer feel claustrophobic
• The orange wood would match the homeless mans costume – making him
camouflaged and will necessarily be seen at first
Cons;
• The area is small so it will be hard to fit cast and crew in plus equipment and still get
a variety of shot types
• A lighting rig wouldn’t fit, and it would be hard to record audio without a mic getting
into shot
• In filming the entire path would be blocked up so it would annoy walkers
Solutions;
• Keep cast and crew to a minimum, only bring essential items, utilise the length of the
pathway rather than the depth
• Film in the day when natural light can be used and fix in post production
• Offer to clear the path [there isn’t an alternative route]
C
The location choice : A
• I think location A is the best because the effects of a small location
and where a homeless man wouldn’t necessarily be works well with
the horror genre.
• The location is close to my house meaning it will be quick, easy and
cheep to get people there
• I will need to keep equipment and props to a minimum so that there
will be room to film, but because the location is long, I can utilise the
length of the alley.
The Living Room
Pros;
• The location is very open and spacious meaning it will be easy to set up interesting angles and
have a lot of equipment cast and crew on set
• The location has a lot of light meaning I might not need a lighting rig
• The white colour scheme has connotation of being pure and pristine, this juxtaposes the
horror genre and what happens in the film
Cons;
• The constant noise of a fish tank in the background in undesirable
• The location is unrealistic to be owned by the characters or a viewer making it unrealistic and
unrelateable
Solutions;
• Turn of the fish tank when filming
• Use creative licence
A
Pros;
• The red furniture has connotations of blood and danger which is appropriate for the horror genre
• The open space will fit all the crew and equipment and allows in a lot of natural light, the black out
curtains allows the amount of natural light to be easily controlled
• The room feels homely and welcoming, putting a viewer at easy, making them easers to scare
• The red colour scheme has connotations of blood and danger which follows conventions of the
horror genre
Cons;
• There are cats in the house which could get in the way
• The family photos aren’t off the characters
• Every 15 minuets the grandfather clock makes a noise
Solutions;
• Lock the cats in a different room
• Take down the photos
• Stop the clock or don’t film when the chimes go
B
The location choice : B
• I think location B will be better because it feels more realistic for the
viewer and it has a homely feel to it
• The colour scheme in location B is more appropriate for the horror
genre and can convey the film genre better to the demographic if I
also use the location for a photoshoot
• The problems of the clock chimes is easier to deal with without
potentially killing fish
The Woods A
Pros;
• The woods are realistic with a thick and dense amount of shrubs in order to hide
objects or people in the woods, or even hide a camera to get interesting angles
• Despite having a lot of over-head shrubbery, there is still a lot of light that gets through
meaning a full lighting rig may not be needed
• This section of the woods is rather isolated meaning there is minimal road noise and
people wanting to walk through
Cons;
• This section of the woods is a 20 minuet walk away with no car access meaning it will
be hard to move equipment about and keep costumes clean from the dirty and dust
• There are local birds meaning that bird noise is a problem
• Being outside there are no mains electricity
Solution;
• keep the amount of equipment to a minimum (the good light will help with this)
• Scare away the birds before hand
• Use battery powered equipment
A
B
Pros;
• There is a lot of lighting due to no over head shrubs
• The open space allows for multiple angles
• It will be easy to shoot the antagonist following the protagonist
• The location is only a 5 minuet walk away making it easier to move equipment
Cons;
• The woods don’t feel claustrophobic or scary or look like stereotypical woods
• There are stinging nettles which could cause injury to the cast and crew
• The path is commonly walked by walkers meaning their noise and presence means
filming will constantly be interrupted and restarted
Solution;
• Use close ups and avoid loose angle shots in order to hide the location
• Advise long trousers and be prepared to trim back dangerous shrubs – do a risk
assessment
• Be prepared to stop filming, have people on set ready to stop people walking on
camera
The location choice : A
• I think location A will be better because the trees are thick and dense
it means I can use the location to add scares (for example hiding
something in the trees) and use the claustrophobic feel of the woods
to put a viewer on edge.
• Location B is too open with dangerous such as stinging nettles and
hassles like people walking.
The Woods B
A
Pros;
• The location is isolated enforcing how alone and, therefore, helpless the
characters are in the trailer
• There very few pedestrians near by who would be interrupting filming
• The open space allowing a large verity in shot types and not having to worry
about unwanted things in shot (for example having a sing post in the
background)
Cons;
• The sound of the river might disturb the films sound
• The location is a 10 minuet drive and 15 minuet walk making it awkward to
get to
Solution;
• Keep the microphone away from the river and deal with sound issues in
post
• Keep cast, crew and equipment to a minimum
B
Pros;
• The location contains a playground which infers child
endangerment – a common theme in horror films
Cons;
• The abundance of children may be a sound and mise-en-
scene issue, and they could be disturbed by the blood
Solution;
• Don’t film when people are around
The location choice : A
• I think location A will be better because the isolation of the location
will make it easier to film uninterrupted and will convey the aloneness
of the characters
• The problem with location B is that it is a playground and it could be
hard to not get children in the shot or heard in the shot which will
pose problems on set
Pros;
• The church is in a large space allowing establishing shots
Cons;
• The church isn’t a stereotypical looking church and looks
more like a house than a church
Solution;
• Frame the shot to empathise the aspects of a stereotypical
church
A
Pros;
• The church looks very stereotypical so it will be easy to convey to a viewer
that it’s a church
• The presence of a grave yard will convey to the viewer the themes of the
undead
Cons;
• The church is very tall so it will be hard to get a shot that will frame the
entire church
• The Church is of a main road so road noise may be an issue
Solution;
• Do an establishing shot to convey to the viewer it’s a church
• Film when it isn’t rush hour, re record and do a voice dub if required
B
The location choice : B
• Location B looks more like a Church and is more iconic to a viewer,
also the presence of the grave yard would enable a scene to be shot
in a grave yard which is a horror film convention
• The problems of not being able to shoot the whole church and traffic
noise are easily fixed
