An overview Localization Summit 2014 through its key themes and a summary of the main talks, shown by Fabio Minazzi during the GDC localization summit follow up seminar organized by IGDA Japan in May 2014
The recent advancement in natural language processing and machine learning technologies promises to enable an efficient interface for communication between humans and computers. Thus, the intelligent conversational bots, or chatbot, or as we knew it, has been gaining more popularity recently. Ranging from generic chatbots that enable humans to talk on a wide range of topics, to specific chatbots, that specialize on a certain topic and possess a deep understanding of it. But what is this and how could one make a conversational bot intelligence? In this talk, you will discover more about the conversational bot, how we define it, chatbot anatomy, and what researchers do to make the smart chatbot intelligence.

In March I attended and presented at the first Worldware conference, which took place in Santa Clara, California in the heart of Silicon Valley. I became really excited about this conference as it proved to be the first to directly target business issues around software internationalization and globalization. Too often in other conferences, the focus is very low level on technical issues, while missing greater business planning and operational issues that affect every organization that looks to build and maintain world-ready products. In fact, that issue had been a long running annoyance for me when attending conferences like Unicode and LocalizationWorld. So I was eager to get involved in Worldware and sat on its board as well.

Flutter not yet another mobile cross-platform framework - i ox-kl19oradoe
Having painful experiences with NativeScript and a failed proof-of-concept (PoC) React Native, especially on Android, our development and Executive teams are terrified of any further mention of cross-platform mobile frameworks. However, when approaching Flutter, we believe it is NOT yet another cross-platform mobile development framework. And this is not a pure faith, but based on observation and analysis of (1) its technology, (2) the community adoption, and (3) most importantly, the strategy of Google — its original author and backer.
The Netflix experience is driven by a number of Machine Learning algorithms: personalized ranking, page generation, search, similarity, ratings, etc. On the 6th of January, we simultaneously launched Netflix in 130 new countries around the world, which brings the total to over 190 countries. Preparing for such a rapid expansion while ensuring each algorithm was ready to work seamlessly created new challenges for our recommendation and search teams. In this post, we highlight the four most interesting challenges we’ve encountered in making our algorithms operate globally and, most importantly, how this improved our ability to connect members worldwide with stories they'll love.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
Speakers:
Bob Boule
Robert Boule is a technology enthusiast with PASSION for technology and making things work along with a knack for helping others understand how things work. He comes with around 20 years of solution engineering experience in application security, software continuous delivery, and SaaS platforms. He is known for his dynamic presentations in CI/CD and application security integrated in software delivery lifecycle.
Gopinath Rebala
Gopinath Rebala is the CTO of OpsMx, where he has overall responsibility for the machine learning and data processing architectures for Secure Software Delivery. Gopi also has a strong connection with our customers, leading design and architecture for strategic implementations. Gopi is a frequent speaker and well-known leader in continuous delivery and integrating security into software delivery.

Takeaway from the MT panel
• MT is currently used for non-gaming contents (automotive, IT)
• Currently no game Devs/Pubs succeeded in using MT successfully
• Publishers who tried MT reported poor performance + high costs of operation
• In theory games contents are made of creative texts + noncreative texts
• MT could be used with nonncreative portion of texts
• Effectiveness is under investigation at Microsoft

Localization Summit 2015?...
• Submissions would open late August/early September
• GDC is evaluating based on attendance and community support
• Quality is good, need more people to attend
• How to involve more developers?
• Feel free to send ideas and topic proposals for next year
Will read the contents of the slide. Let’s start the journey!
Session talks about the topics listed in the slide
This session is made of 5 short speeches covering different topics. Each speaker has 8 minutes, I have one ;-)
Christopher created a simple, Excel-based tool to feed strings to the localizers and replace them quickly in the game. He reported that this minimum effort boosted sales by almost 20%. Takeaway: Localization can be done by everyone and has great returns
Lars created for himself an opensource localization framework. It allows people to deal with multilingual strings inside a game. The framework displays multlingual strings. It is portable on multiple plaftorms, without you to bother rewriting the code. It currently supports UTF-8 characters. For more info, see github.com/larsiusprime/firetongue
Process requires export and reimporto of CSV or TSV files
This was a global marketing/advertizing session. InMobi is a mobile advertizing company based in SF.
Sales depend on advertizing, so f we produce a game we are better understand the main concepts behind successful advertizing campaign for videogames.
Will read content of slide
Let’s focus now on the «Local Habitats».
Apps live in very competitive envronments. Understndng the habts of the users in each area requires a good knowledge of how peole play in each area
E.g. 60% of China App store revenue is from 3rd party stores, which are still unknown n Europe and NA
This speech is about a specific content creation technque that can revolutionize the way dubbing is performed for cut scenes
Will read the content of the slide
This technique has been pioneeered at our studio in Los Angeles early this year.
The face capture is taken wth the moving camera. Actor is alwais n frame and the output can be used for driving simultaneously the Dec team of 3Artists and the international studios for dubbing, providing top quality reference assets far before the cutscecnes are ready.
This speech again expolores the concept the simple way to reach an international audience. Namely, well translating the App description can provide a huge boost to sales and a lot of useful info on a target market.
Wil read the contents of the slides.
Wow, this was a fast run through the microtalks!!
Back to the longest session of the summit.
This is a speech that I really looked forward very much to. We collected some of the most expert people in the world to talk about a taboo in the Loc industry: Machine Translation (MT). Moderator was Mike Dillinger, a veterane of MT, working for MT department at eBay in the US.
After a short introducton on basics of MT, Mike asked 4 questions to the panel, and the discussion was pretty lively.
Will read the 4 questions
Well, this is the result of the talk: (will read the contents of the slide)
Now hand over the presentation to Kenji and Ruyta (from the shore in Okinawa).
I will have two more important slides at the end. I really hope I was fast enough to buy additional minutes for those final remarks
Firt of all, for those who could not attend the conderence, UBM provides all the slides and the videorecordings. Slides are for fere, the videos require to buy a a subsription. Even idividual speeches can be downloaded
What next? We want to be back for the 6° year in a row. Currently GDC is evaluating which summit to support as there are severla submissions.
Despite the quality of the contents we have some concern as the Loc Summit is not a large summit.
If you have ideas and proposals for the next Summit, feel free to get in touch, speak later on today or during dinner. It is now time for next seminar!
Thanks for your attention! And special Thanks to Ryo who has patiently translated my words for you.
