This article explores the origins and meanings behind some popular Christmas symbols such as candy canes, holly, ivy, poinsettias, Christmas trees, candles and Santa Claus. It finds that while not mentioned in biblical accounts, many of these symbols originated from historical facts, legends or traditions that sought to inspire faith and remind people of the birth and meaning of Jesus Christ. For example, candy canes were designed to represent the blood of Christ through their red stripes. The 12 Days of Christmas song is said to symbolize different aspects of Christian faith through its gifts. Candles represent Jesus as the light of the world who conquered darkness. Christmas trees have roots in German religious plays about the Garden of Eden.
