ARE YOU READY?

Trying to “Get Ready” for some can be a bit of a chore. It seems that
no one can stay focused long enough to complete the task without
“reminders.” They find themselves asking repeatedly, “are you ready?”
Those words have been reminders for me from my youth. Worship services
have been a normal part of my life for as long as I can remember. One of the
fondest memories I have worshipping with a small congregation of God’s
people in north Mississippi is the singing. One song that was often sung asks
the same question as the title of this article. The song is titled There’s a Great
Day Coming. Let’s take to heart the words of this song, and maybe we can
prepare ourselves for the Great Day that is coming. Are you ready?
In that day all “the saints and sinners shall be parted right and left.”
Jesus came to this earth with a mission. “For the Son of man is come to seek
and to save that which was lost” (Luke 19:10). During His time here on earth
Jesus chose to teach (i.e. prepare) people to be followers of Him. His message
was one of preparation “Repent: for the kingdom of Heaven is at hand”
(Matthew 4:17). Will L. Thompson’s (the author of the song) first verse has
words very similar to those of Jesus (Matthew 25:31-46). Jesus will come and
there will be a great separation like a shepherd separating the sheep (saints)
from the goats (sinners). The question is, “Are you ready?”
In that day there will be a brightness “to them that love the LORD.”
Paul wrote to the church in Thessalonica about scenes of the second coming
(i.e. great day).
But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them
which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no
hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them
also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him. For this we say
unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain
unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep.
For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the
voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in
Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be
caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the
air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. Wherefore comfort one
another with these words (1Thessalonians 4:13-18).

Many will read this section of Scripture and
come away with a feeling of fear and dread.
Paul was not trying to terrify this, or any,
congregation, but rather edify and comfort
them. Did we not read “so shall we ever be
with the Lord,” and “comfort one another with
these words?” Yes, the second coming of Jesus
will indeed be a great day for them that love
the Lord. We must not forget, however, Jesus
said, “If ye love Me, keep My commandments”
(John 14:15). Are you ready?
In that day there will be great sadness
“when the sinner shall hear his doom depart,
I know ye not.” Jesus said that the majority of
humanity will be lost (Matthew 7:13, 14).
Sadly, many of those will face eternity under a
false sense of security. “Many will say to me in
that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied
in thy name? and in thy name have cast out
devils? and in thy name done many wonderful
works? And then will I profess unto them, I
never knew you: depart from me, ye that work
iniquity” (Matthew 7:22). These people fall
because they heard the word but did not do all
that God said. We cannot pick and choose the
church, worship, or way of our choice, we
must choose the church, worship, and way of
God’s choice. So finally, as the song (and God)
asks, “Are you ready for the judgment day?”

Cancer Center Project
The Community Outreach Program
has brown grocery bags in the foyer. We
are asking everyone who can to please
take a bag, purchase the 6 food items
stapled to the bag, and place your bag in
the library by THIS Sunday, Nov. 14.
These bags will be delivered to the Cancer Center in
Tupelo to help many of their patients who need
