Liz Aspden and Richard Mather, Presentation at mLearn 2008
1. Evolutionary snapshots of the mobile learning landscape Liz Aspden & Richard Mather Academic Innovation Sheffield Hallam University
2. In any one day, a learner will experience many locations, interactions and situations with a range of people, places, resources, devices and objects... ...this is their mobile learning landscape
3. "loving my laptop…working on making some notes on the feedback…while also watching tv in the living room!" "starting to put my powerpoint presentations [together] in my flat, will eventually move on to a café to finish them off when I go for a coffee." http://www.flickr.com/photos/althouse/11110833/
7. "Did some reading in a quiet pub for an hour…pub doesn't sound like a great learnin' space but am able2focus on reading more when away from computers." "…if I take a book to the pub or café I'll actually read it cos there's nothing else to do if you're on your own…" http://www.flickr.com/photos/mightymightymatze/270041670/
8. "still sat in Owen 923 trying to access [online resource] but cannot access it on laptop " "workspaces are virtual as well as real. vista keeps updating internet explorer and the tls level 1 keeps being re-set stopping access." http://www.flickr.com/photos/90001203@N00/1043205025/
9. "Ok so the train was rubbish as it did not turn up at all and I had to crowd onto the next one and stand." http://www.flickr.com/photos/wink/2323114236/
10. "finally back to it, moved to conservatory…could do with library but internet will do..." http://www.flickr.com/photos/iain/307487043/
11. "the new version of the e-book I subscribe to arrived this morning. I listened to it on the car stereo in traffic, then switched to reading when I got on the train. I could have let the car drive itself but I felt like taking over"
12. " No need to travel to the university today, as all members of the group have got access to a telepresence suite. We’ll be presenting our ideas for the new building, it’s about time we started to make a decision"
13. " My new communicator arrived today, and it has a combined solar-kinetic power cell, and it will recharge in wireless power zones. No more flat batteries!!"
14. " The OLED screen in the lid of my solar rucksack is far easier to look at than the screen on my watch. Looking at full documents is far better than reading as plain text, I just wish I’d bought it earlier"
15. " Free, wireless broadband has made a real impact on my day. No more logging on to different hot spots and paying a number of wi-fi providers, it’s just seamless now"
16. " It is my tutorial with the module’s invited expert today, I’m quite excited. I posted my questions last week and he left me a vid-mail to say that he was looking forward to a challenging discussion"
17. "The material for this week’s module arrived right on schedule, which reminded me that I need to write my part for next week. I'm looking forward to leading the session with the touchwall, but I'm glad I've been able to practise using my Wii3 and projector at home"
18. " I’d been meaning to talk to Alex and when I arrived in Sheffield my sunglasses told me that he was nearby"
19. " The learning centre reopens today after the refurbishment. It’s going to be strange with so much more space after they removed so many books. I’m looking forward to checking out the immersive visualisation floor – I’ve always wanted to see what Tokyo is like"
20. Considering the 2008 and futuristic snapshots, how realistic are these for your own contexts? What are the priorities for development in terms of staff, students, and institutions? Will demographic changes (e.g. decrease in the amount of 18 year olds over the next few years) influence how the mobile learning landscape develops?
21.
22. " It is great that you can plug your ipod into the screens on the backs of seats on the train. The safety and station announcements can be annoying but the screen is so much bigger. By the end of the journey, most of the people in the carriage had watched my video, and some had given me feedback"
23. "The new touch-tables in the entrance to the learning centre make it so easy to submit work now, I just placed my communicator on the top, it identified the file marked for submission, I clicked 'confirm' and that was it"
