Timelines and interpreting prophecies
 The prophecies of Isaiah are not in chronological order. The prophecies
covers vast periods of time and some times prophecies within a single
verse may span 1000s of years. Example:
 Isa 9:6 For to us a child is born.
 Isa 9:6 and the government will be on his shoulders.
 Prophesied around 730 BC, the brith of the child has been fulfilled but the
government to be placed on his shoulder is yet to be fulfilled ~2730 years
since Isaiah penned it.

Mankind’s ultimate Hope – Death will
be no more
 Isa 25:8 He has swallowed up death
forever! The Lord Yahweh will wipe
away tears from off all faces. He will
take the reproach of his people
away from off all the earth, for
Yahweh has spoken it.
 A highlight of of the book of Isaiah are
prophecies of hope.
 Isaiah gave many ‘Hope’ prophecies both
for Israel and foreigners.
 Eternal life / defeat of death
 No more mourning, crying, or pain
 To be with the eternal invisible God for
evermore.
Isaiah’s prophecy of hope reiterated in
Revelation
 Rev 7:17 for the Lamb who is in the
middle of the throne shepherds them, and
leads them to springs of life-giving waters.
And God will wipe away every tear from
their eyes.”
 Rev 21:4 He will wipe away every tear from
their eyes. Death will be no
more; neither will there be mourning, nor
crying, nor pain, any more. The first things
have passed away.”
The Hope of Resurrection taught by Isaiah
Isa 26:19 Your dead
shall live. My dead
bodies shall arise.
Awake and sing, you
who dwell in the
dust; for your dew is
like the dew of herbs,
and the earth will cast
out the departed
spirits.
Hope concerning the latter days
 Isa 2:2 It shall happen in the latter days, that the mountain of Yahweh’s
house shall be established on the top of the mountains, and shall be
raised above the hills; and all nations shall flow to it.
 Isa 2:3 Many peoples shall go and say, “Come, let’s go up to the
mountain of Yahweh, to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach
us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths.” For out of Zion the law shall
go out, and Yahweh’s word from Jerusalem.
 Isa 2:4 He will judge between the nations, and will decide concerning
many peoples; and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their
spears into pruning hooks. Nation shall not lift up sword against
nation, neither shall they learn war any more.
 Isa 2:5 House of Jacob, come, and let’s walk in the light of
Yahweh.

Last days – When?
 The last days began in the
first century with the
establishment of the new covenant
with hope in the returning Messiah:
Little children, it is the last
time: and as ye have heard that
antichrist shall come, even now are
there many antichrists; whereby we
know that it is the last time.
(1 John 2:18 KJV)
Mat 4:17 From that time Jesus
began to preach,
saying, “Repent, for the kingdom
of heaven is at hand.”
Latter days V/s Last days
 The birth and redemptive work of the Christ ushers the hope of
the latter days and marks the beginning of last days
 Cleopas (probably by his reading of the prophet Isaiah) expressed
his expectation of the Messiah thus:
 Luk 24:21 But we had hoped that he was the one to
redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third
day since these things happened.
 Almost every Christian generation has believed and
continues to believe they are in the last days and the end will
be in their lifetime…
 But, God’s timelines are different from our timeline and
expectations.
Hints of delays
Jesus prophesied of a terrible time to come even
though he said the kingdom is at hand:
Luk 21:24 They will fall by the edge of the
sword, and will be led captive into all the
nations. Jerusalem will be trampled down by
the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles
are fulfilled.
The desperate hope for Christ to
return in our lifetime
It is good to be aware of world events
Return of Israel, Two world wars, etc. are
significant events
but that does not mean Christ has to return
within 20 or 30 years
Even Jesus does not know his date of
return
Can we know the Seasons?
“It is not yours to
know times or seasons which
the Father placed in His own authority”
Jesus
Fig tree
 Luk 21:29 He told them a parable. “See the
fig tree, and all the trees.
 Luk 21:30 When they are already budding,
you see it and know by your own selves
that the summer is already near.
 Luk 21:31 Even so you also, when you see
these things happening, know
that God’s Kingdom is near.
 Luk 21:32 Most certainly I tell you, this
generation will not pass away
until all things are accomplished.
Jesus always preached Kingdom of God was near!
Mat 4:17
Even an angel from heaven cannot tell when the
end will be, could it be another 150 years or just
15 years away?
 But of that day or that hour no one knows, not even the
angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.
 Watch, keep alert, and pray; for you don’t know when
the time is. (Mar 13:32,33)
 Paul wrote to the Thessalonians nearly 2000 years ago:
 “But you, brothers, aren’t in darkness, that the day should overtake you
like a thief”
 Like Cleopas and the Thessalonians we continue to hope in the sure
return of the Messiah
 The message in Isaiah continues to give us HOPE
The return date of Christ - A painful
mystery
 We may say he is coming in 1000, 1866, 1910, 1914, 2000, etc and
fail repeatedly. Let us trust Jesus on this:
for the Son of Man is coming in an hour that you don’t
expect him
Luk 12:39-40 But know this, that if the master of the house
had known in what hour the thief was coming, he would have
watched, and not allowed his house to be broken
into. Therefore be ready also, for the Son of Man is coming in
an hour that you don’t expect him.”
Newton (Died: March 31, 1727),
an excellent bible student who
gave a brilliant framework:
“The time times & half time do not end
before 2060. …. It may end later, but I see
no reason for its ending sooner. This I
mention not to assert when the time of the
end shall be, but to put a stop to the rash
conjectures of fancifull men who are
frequently predicting the time of the end,&
by doing so bring the sacred prophesies
into discredit as often as their
predictions fail. Christ comes as a thief in
the night, & it is not for us to know the
times & seasons which God hath put into
his own breast.“
We ought to watch
our lives more than
dates
We should lead a life of consistency irrespective
of his return date: (1Th 5:1-11)
 “But concerning the times and the seasons, brothers, you have no need that anything
be written to you. For you yourselves know well that the day of the Lord
comes like a thief in the night.
…
 But you, brothers, aren’t in darkness, that the day should overtake you like a thief. You
are all children of light, and children of the day. We don’t belong to the night, nor to
darkness, so then let’s not sleep, as the rest do, but let’s watch and be sober. For those
who sleep, sleep in the night; and those who are drunk are drunk in the night.
 But let’s, since we belong to the day, be sober, putting on the
breastplate of faith and love, and, for a helmet, the hope of
salvation. For God didn’t appoint us to wrath, but to the obtaining of salvation
through our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us, that, whether we wake or sleep, we
should live together with him. Therefore exhort one another, and build each other up,
even as you also do.”
We know Christ will return therefore we ought
to watch our lives
 Luk 11:35 Watch, then, that the light in you is not darkness.
 Mat 26:41 Watch and pray, that you do not enter into temptation.
 1Co 16:13, 14 Watch! Stand fast in the faith! Be men! Be strong! all your things be
in love.
 Eph 5:15 Then watch how carefully you walk, not as unwise, but as wise ones
 Col 2:8 Watch that there not be one robbing you through philosophy and empty
deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the elements of the world,
and not according to Christ.
 2Pe 3:17 Then beloved, you knowing beforehand, watch lest being led away by the
error of the lawless you fall from your own steadfastness.
 Mar 13:37 And what I say to you, I say to all. Watch!
 Rev 16:15 Behold, I am coming as a thief. Blessed is the one watching
Luk 11:35 Watch, then, that the light in you is not darkness.

The Day of Lord Yahweh
As Isiah saw them
 Judgment on Babylon thus:
 Isa 13:9 Behold, the day of Yahweh comes, cruel,
with wrath and fierce anger; to make the land a
desolation, and to destroy its sinners out of it.
 Large scale judgment
 Isa 2:12 For there will be a day of Yahweh of
Armies for all that is proud and arrogant, and for
all that is lifted up; and it shall be brought low:
 Isa 2:13 For all the cedars of Lebanon, that are
high and lifted up, for all the oaks of Bashan,
 Isa 2:14 For all the high mountains, for all the hills
that are lifted up,
 Isa 2:15 For every lofty tower, for every fortified
wall,
 Isa 2:16 For all the ships of Tarshish, and for all
pleasant imagery.
 Isa 2:17 The loftiness of man shall be bowed
down, and the arrogance of men shall be brought
low; and Yahweh alone shall be exalted in that
day.
Oba 1:15 For the day of
Yahweh is near all the
nations! As you have done, it
will be done to you. Your deeds
will return upon your own head.
Are you sure you want Christ to
return today?
Amo 5:18 “Woe to you who
desire the day of
Yahweh! Why do you long
for the day of Yahweh? It is
darkness, and not light.
Act 17:31 because he has fixed a day on
which he will judge the world in
righteousness by a man whom he has
appointed; and of this he has given
assurance to all by raising him from the
dead.”
 Heb 10:37 For, “Yet a little while, and
the coming one will come and will
not delay;
 Heb 10:38 but my righteous one shall
live by faith, and if he
shrinks back, my soul has no
pleasure in him.”
 Heb 10:39 But we are not of those
who shrink back and are destroyed, but
of those who have faith and
preserve their souls.
With the breath of his lips he will kill the wicked
(Prophecy time breaks)
 Isa 11:1 A shoot will come out of the stock of Jesse, and a
branch out of his roots will bear fruit.
 Isa 11:2 Yahweh’s Spirit will rest on him: the spirit of wisdom
and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of
knowledge and of the fear of Yahweh.
…
Isa 11:4 but with righteousness he will judge the poor, and decide
with equity for the humble of the earth. He will strike the earth
with the rod of his mouth; and with the breath of his
lips he will kill the wicked.

To be

Why the delay?
The Lord is not slow concerning his promise, as
some count slowness; but is patient with us, not
wishing that any should perish, but
that all should come to repentance. (2Pe 3:9)
