Cattle Situation Report, April to June
2023
• The volume of cattle production from April to June 2023 was recorded at 60.95
thousand metric tons, liveweight. This indicates an annual decline of -1.0
percent relative to its level in the same quarter of the previous year of 61.54
thousand metric tons, liveweight.
• Northern Mindanao was the top producer of cattle with 9.56 thousand metric
tons, liveweight or 15.7 percent share to the total cattle production during the
reference quarter. Completing the top five regions with highest volume of
cattle production at liveweight during the quarter were the following:
a. CALABARZON, 8.24 thousand metric tons;
b. Bicol Region, 6.28 thousand metric tons;
c. Ilocos Region, 5.76 thousand metric tons; and
d. Central Visayas, 5.23 thousand metric tons.
These regions accounted for 57.5 percent share to the country’s total cattle
production in the second quarter of 2023.
Distribution of Cattle Inventory by
Classification June 2023
• As of 30 June 2023, the total cattle inventory reached
2.58 million heads.
• This indicates an increase of 0.1 percent from the
previous year’s same period count of 2.57 million heads.
• About 81.4 percent of the country’s cattle population
during the period came from smallhold farms, while the
remaining 14.9 percent and 3.7 percent were comprised
of semi-commercial farms and commercial farms,
respectively.
• Central Visayas recorded the highest cattle population
with 338.28 thousand heads. This was followed by
CALABARZON and Ilocos Region with corresponding
inventories of 244.01 thousand heads and 242.83
thousand heads. These regions shared 32.0 percent to
the country’s total cattle population as of 30 June 2023.

Growth Rate of Farmgate Price of Cattle
for Slaughter, Philippines April-June 2023
• The average farmgate price of cattle for slaughter was
quoted at PhP 166.61 per kilogram, liveweight during
the quarter. This indicates a decrease of -0.6
percent from the previous year’s same quarter average
farmgate price of PhP 167.53 per kilogram, liveweight.
• In the second quarter of 2023, the highest average
farmgate price was noted in May at PhP 167.39 per
kilogram, liveweight, while the lowest average farmgate
price was observed in April at PhP 165.66 per
kilogram, liveweight.
Carabao Situation Report, April to June
2023
• The volume of carabao production from April to June 2023 was
recorded at 33.72 thousand metric tons, liveweight. This indicates an
annual increase of 0.5 percent from the 33.57 thousand metric tons,
liveweight output in the same period of 2022.
• Western Visayas was the top producer of carabao with 4.40 thousand
metric tons, liveweight or 13.0 percent share to the total carabao
production during the period. Completing the top five regions with the
highest volume of carabao production at liveweight in the second
quarter of 2023 were the following:
a. Northern Mindanao, 3.04 thousand metric tons;
b. Davao Region, 2.94 thousand metric tons;
c. Eastern Visayas, 2.84 thousand metric tons; and
d. CALABARZON, 2.62 thousand metric tons.
Distribution of Carabao Inventory By
Classification Philippines: as of June 2023
• As of 30 June 2023, the total carabao inventory was
estimated at 2.73 million heads.
• This indicates a decline of -1.2 percent from its previous
year’s same period count of 2.77 million heads.
• 99.1 percent of the country’s carabao population came
from smallhold farms, while the remaining 0.8 percent
and 0.1 percent were from semi-commercial and
commercial farms, respectively.
• Bicol Region recorded the highest carabao population
with 322.85 thousand heads as of 30 June 2023. This
was followed by Western Visayas and Central Luzon with
corresponding inventories of 256.33 thousand heads
and 249.99 thousand heads.
• These three regions shared 30.3 percent to the country’s
total carabao population during the period.
Average Farmgate price and Annual Growth rate of Farmgate
Price of Carabao for Slaughter, Philippines April-June 2021-2023
• The average farmgate price of carabao for
slaughter was quoted at PhP 144.56 per
kilogram, liveweight during the quarter.
• This reflects a decrease of -5.4 percent from
the previous year’s same period average
farmgate price of PhP 152.85 per kilogram,
liveweight.
• In the second quarter of 2023, the highest
average farmgate price was observed in June
at PhP 148.49 per kilogram, liveweight, while
the lowest average farmgate price was
recorded in May at PhP 138.64 per kilogram,
liveweight.
Swine Situation Report, April to June
2023
• The volume of hog production from April to June 2023 was recorded at
422.72 thousand metric tons, liveweight. This indicates an annual
increase of 1.0 percent from the 418.40 thousand metric tons,
liveweight output in the same period of 2022.
• Central Visayas was the top producer of hog with 54.44 thousand metric
tons, liveweight or 12.9 percent share to the total hog production during
the period. Completing the top five regions with the highest volume of
hog production at liveweight during the quarter were the following:
a. CALABARZON with 53.84 thousand metric tons;
b. Northern Mindanao with 50.98 thousand metric tons;
c. Central Luzon with 42.35 thousand metric tons; and
d. Western Visayas with 42.03 thousand metric tons.
• These regions accounted for 57.6 percent share to the country’s total
hog production during the period.
Distribution of Swine Inventory by
Classification Philippines: as of
June 2023
• As of 30 June 2023, the country’s total swine inventory
was estimated at 10.07 million heads. This was 1.4
percent higher than the previous year’s same period
count of 9.94 million heads.
• About 67.5 percent of the country’s swine population
came from smallhold farms, while the remaining 29.2
percent and 3.2 percent were from commercial and
semi-commercial farms, respectively.
• CALABARZON recorded the highest swine population of
1.30 million heads as of 30 June 2023. This was followed
by Central Visayas and Northern Mindanao with
corresponding inventories of 1.17 million heads and 1.12
million heads.
• These three regions accounted for 35.6 percent share to
the country’s total swine population during the period.
Average Farmgate Price and Annual
Growth rate of Farmgate Price of Hogs
for Slaughter, Philippines April-June
2021-2023
• The average farmgate price of hogs for slaughter
was quoted at PhP 169.73 per kilogram,
liveweight for this quarter.
• This registers a decrease of -5.1 percent from the
previous year’s same quarter quotation of PhP
178.86 per kilogram, liveweight.
• In the second quarter of 2023, the highest
average farmgate price was recorded in June at
PhP 171.85 per kilogram, liveweight, while the
lowest average farmgate price was noted in May
at PhP 168.32 per kilogram, liveweight.
Goat Situation
Report, April to June
2023
• The volume of goat production from April to June 2023 was recorded at 16.32 thousand
metric tons, liveweight. This indicates an annual decline of -0.2 percent from the 16.36
thousand metric tons, liveweight output in the same period of 2022.
• Northern Mindanao was the top producer of goat with 2.01 thousand metric tons,
liveweight or 12.3 percent share to the total goat production during the reference quarter.
Completing the top five regions with the highest volume of goat production at liveweight in
the second quarter of 2023 were the following:
a. Central Visayas, 1.97 thousand metric tons;
b. Davao Region, 1.78 thousand metric tons;
c. Western Visayas, 1.68 thousand metric tons; and
d. Ilocos Region, 1.67 thousand metric tons.
• These regions accounted for 55.8 percent share to the country’s total goat production
during the quarter.
Distribution of Goat Inventory
by Classification Philippines:
as of June 2023
• As of 30 June 2023, the total goat inventory was estimated at 3.88 million
heads. This reflects a decrease of -0.5 percent compared with the previous
year’s same period count of 3.90 million heads.
• About 99.3 percent of the country’s goat population came from smallhold
farms, while semi-commercial and commercial farms contributed 0.4
percent and 0.3 percent, respectively.
• Central Visayas recorded the highest goat population with 608.22
thousand heads. This was followed by Central Luzon and Western Visayas
with corresponding inventories of 447.64 thousand heads and 434.83
thousand heads.
• These three regions shared 38.4 percent to the country’s total goat
population as of 30 June 2023.
Average Farmgate price and Annual
Growth rate of Farmgate Price of Goat for
Slaughter, Philippines April-June 2021-
2023
• The average farmgate price of goat for slaughter was quoted
at PhP 230.65 per kilogram, liveweight for this quarter. This
was 7.3 percent higher than the previous year’s same period
average farmgate price of PhP 215.03 per kilogram,
liveweight.
• In the second quarter of 2023, the highest average farmgate
price was observed in May at PhP 235.53 per kilogram,
liveweight, while the lowest average farmgate price was
recorded in June at PhP 222.74 per kilogram, liveweight.
Chicken Situation Report,
April to June 2023
• The volume of total chicken production from April to June 2023 was
recorded at 477.76 thousand metric tons, liveweight, indicating an
annual growth of 3.2 percent from the 463.12 thousand metric tons,
liveweight output in the same period of 2022.
• Central Luzon was the top producer of chicken with 154.12 thousand
metric tons, liveweight or 32.3 percent share to the total chicken
production during the reference quarter. Completing the top five
regions with the highest volume of chicken production at liveweight
in the second quarter of 2023 were the following:
a. CALABARZON, 93.90 thousand metric tons;
b. Northern Mindanao, 39.08 thousand metric tons;
c. Western Visayas, 32.22 thousand metric tons; and
d. Central Visayas, 29.67 thousand metric tons.
• These regions accounted for 73.0 percent share to the country’s total
chicken production during the quarter.
Distribution of Chicken
Inventory by Type Philippines:
as of June 30 2023
• As of 30 June 2023, the total chicken inventory reached 200.21 million birds. This
was 2.8 percent higher than the previous year’s same period count of 194.71
million birds. Population of native/improved chicken and broiler chicken improved
by 6.2 percent and 1.2 percent, respectively. Meanwhile, layer chicken stocks
reported a reduction of -0.9 percent.
• Of the total chicken inventory, native/improved chicken accounted for 43.3
percent, followed by broiler chicken with 34.5 percent share, and layer chicken
with 22.2 percent share.
• The highest chicken inventory was noted in Central Luzon with 33.68 million birds.
This was followed by CALABARZON with 27.32 million birds and Northern
Mindanao with 25.87 million birds. These regions accounted for 43.4 percent
share to the country’s total chicken inventory during the period.
• The highest inventory of native/improved chicken was recorded in Western
Visayas with 12.91 million birds. Central Luzon reported the highest inventory of
broiler chicken with 18.48 million birds, while CALABARZON had the highest layer
chicken stocks with 16.35 million birds.

chicken April-June 2021-2023
• The average farmgate price of broiler chicken at PhP 134.13
per kilogram, liveweight during the quarter recorded a
decline of -2.4 percent from its previous year’s same period
average farmgate price of PhP 137.39 per kilogram,
liveweight.
• In the second quarter of 2023, the highest average farmgate
price was quoted in June at PhP 140.25 per kilogram,
liveweight, while the lowest average farmgate price was
noted in May at PhP 129.99 per kilogram, liveweight.
Duck Situation Report,
April to June 2023
• The volume of duck production from April to June 2023 was recorded at 6.74 thousand metric tons,
liveweight. This indicates an increase of 7.1 percent from the same period of 2022 level of 6.29 thousand
metric tons, liveweight. This level of production in the second quarter of 2023 was a recovery from the
annual decline of -7.5 percent recorded in the same quarter of 2022.
• By region, Central Luzon was the top producer of duck with 1.95 thousand metric tons, liveweight or 28.9
percent share to the total duck production during the quarter. Completing the top five regions with the
highest volume of duck production at liveweight in the second quarter of 2023 were the following:
a. SOCCSKSARGEN, 1.23 thousand metric tons;
b. Northern Mindanao, 0.71 thousand metric tons;
c. Western Visayas, 0.64 thousand metric tons; and
d. Cagayan Valley, 0.62 thousand metric tons.
• These regions accounted for 76.4 percent of the country’s total duck production during the quarter.
Distribution of Duck Inventory by
classification Philippines: as of June 30
• As of 30 June 2023, the total duck inventory was estimated
at 14.52 million birds. This was 7.0 percent higher than the
previous year’s same period count of 13.57 million birds.
About 66.1 percent of the country’s duck population came
from smallhold farms, while the remaining 31.2 percent
and 2.7 percent were from semi-commercial and
commercial farms, respectively.
• Central Luzon recorded the highest duck population of 5.03
million birds as of 30 June 2023. This was followed by
Cagayan Valley and SOCCSKSARGEN with corresponding
inventories of 1.55 million birds and 1.46 million birds.
These three regions accounted for 55.4 percent of the
country’s total duck population during the period.

Duck egg (April to June 2023
• The average farmgate price of duck egg for
the second quarter of 2023 was quoted at
PhP 8.71 per piece. This was 9.7 percent
higher than the previous year’s same
quarter average farmgate price of PhP 7.94
per piece. (Figure 3)
• In the second quarter of 2023, the highest
average farmgate price was recorded in
April at PhP 8.96 per piece, while the lowest
average farmgate price was quoted in May
at PhP 8.51 per piece.
Relevant technical terms used in animal
husbandry
• Artificial insemination is the placing of sperm in the female reproductive tract by other than natural means
• Bitch - An adult female dog
• Boar - An adult uncastrated male pig used for breeding.
• Bos indicus - Bos indicus is humped cattle found in tropical countries.
• Bos Taurus - Bos taurus is the domestic cattle originating from either the Aurochs or the Celtic shorthorn.
• Bovine - is a generic name for cattle.
• Breed - is a group of animals with distinct shapes and colors which produce offspring with similar shapes and colors.
• Breeding Bull or Stud Bull - An adult male used for breeding.
• Buck is a male of such species as goats, deer, rabbits, etc; an intact mature male goat.
• Bull is a male of bovine of any age that has not been castrated.
• Bullock or Steer: An adult castrated male used for carting and tillage
• Burdizzo is an instrument used for bloodless castration which clamps off the tissue connecting the testis to the rest of the body.
• Calf is a beef animal under one year of age
• Calving: The act of giving birth to a young one
• Cannibalism is the act of eating another member of the same species.
• Capon is a male chicken whose reproductive organs have been removed or rendered inactive while the individual is still young.
• Caponization A process in which the testes are removed from the adult male.
• Cattle is the animals of the family bovine, genus bos.
• Chevon is meat from less than a year-old goat.
• Colostrum is the milk produced the first few days after parturition.
• Concentrate is the feed containing less than 18 percent crude fiber when dry; grains and protein supplements are concentrates.
• Cow is a female bovine that has had one or more calves; or an older female that has not had a calf but has matured.
• Creep is an enclosure to which only the young of the species have access, so they fed separately from the adult stock.
• Creep feed is used to provide special feed for the young; also, the feed provided for the young within a special enclosure.
• Cud in ruminants, a ball-like mess of feed that is brought up from the stomach to be rechewed.
• Cull is used to dispose of the poorer animals in a herd or flock.
• Dam is the mother of an animal.
• Dehorn is used to remove chemically or mechanically the horns of livestock.
• Disbud is used to remove or prevent growth of the horn buds in young livestock.
• Dock is used to remove all or part of the tail.
• Doe is a female of those species in which the male is called a buck, for example, goats, deer, rabbits, etc.
• Estrus is the time during which the female will accept the male for copulation; also referred to as being in heat.
• Ewe is a female sheep or lamb; Ewe is a mature female sheep.
• Feed efficiency is the ratio of units of feed needed per one unit of production.
• Feeder calf is a weaned calf that is under one year of age and is sold to be fed for more growth.
• Flock is a group of animals (sheep, goats, birds).
• Flushing is increasing the amount of feed to an animal for a short period of time, usually just prior to breeding.
• Haylage is a low-moisture grass silage.
• Heifer is a female bovine that has not had a calf or has not matured as a cow.
• Heterosis improvement in the offspring resulting from favorable combinations of
gene pairs; sometimes called hybrid vigor.
• Kidding: The act of giving birth to a young one Lamb: Lamb is a young sheep
• Lambing: The act of giving birth to a young one
• Livestock: Livestock means stocks that are live and are used for production of
items for commercial and for domestic consumption.
• Parturition is the act of giving birth.
• Polled cattle do not have horns.
• Ram lamb: A male young one
• Rumen is the first and largest compartment of the ruminant stomach.
• Ruminant is an animal that has a stomach divided into several compartments: for example, cattle, sheep, goats Rumination in
ruminants, the process of chewing the cud.
• Steer is a male bovine animal that was castrated before reaching sexual maturity.
• Veal are the calves younger than three months of age sold for slaughter.
• Wether: An adult castrated male sheep.

  • 1. Cattle Situation Report, April to June 2023 • The volume of cattle production from April to June 2023 was recorded at 60.95 thousand metric tons, liveweight. This indicates an annual decline of -1.0 percent relative to its level in the same quarter of the previous year of 61.54 thousand metric tons, liveweight. • Northern Mindanao was the top producer of cattle with 9.56 thousand metric tons, liveweight or 15.7 percent share to the total cattle production during the reference quarter. Completing the top five regions with highest volume of cattle production at liveweight during the quarter were the following: a. CALABARZON, 8.24 thousand metric tons; b. Bicol Region, 6.28 thousand metric tons; c. Ilocos Region, 5.76 thousand metric tons; and d. Central Visayas, 5.23 thousand metric tons. These regions accounted for 57.5 percent share to the country’s total cattle production in the second quarter of 2023.

Distribution of Cattle Inventory by Classification June 2023 • As of 30 June 2023, the total cattle inventory reached 2.58 million heads. • This indicates an increase of 0.1 percent from the previous year’s same period count of 2.57 million heads. • About 81.4 percent of the country’s cattle population during the period came from smallhold farms, while the remaining 14.9 percent and 3.7 percent were comprised of semi-commercial farms and commercial farms, respectively. • Central Visayas recorded the highest cattle population with 338.28 thousand heads. This was followed by CALABARZON and Ilocos Region with corresponding inventories of 244.01 thousand heads and 242.83 thousand heads. These regions shared 32.0 percent to the country’s total cattle population as of 30 June 2023.

Average farmgate price and Annual Growth Rate of Farmgate Price of Cattle for Slaughter, Philippines April-June 2023 • The average farmgate price of cattle for slaughter was quoted at PhP 166.61 per kilogram, liveweight during the quarter. This indicates a decrease of -0.6 percent from the previous year’s same quarter average farmgate price of PhP 167.53 per kilogram, liveweight. • In the second quarter of 2023, the highest average farmgate price was noted in May at PhP 167.39 per kilogram, liveweight, while the lowest average farmgate price was observed in April at PhP 165.66 per kilogram, liveweight.
  • 4. Carabao Situation Report, April to June 2023 • The volume of carabao production from April to June 2023 was recorded at 33.72 thousand metric tons, liveweight. This indicates an annual increase of 0.5 percent from the 33.57 thousand metric tons, liveweight output in the same period of 2022. • Western Visayas was the top producer of carabao with 4.40 thousand metric tons, liveweight or 13.0 percent share to the total carabao production during the period. Completing the top five regions with the highest volume of carabao production at liveweight in the second quarter of 2023 were the following: a. Northern Mindanao, 3.04 thousand metric tons; b. Davao Region, 2.94 thousand metric tons; c. Eastern Visayas, 2.84 thousand metric tons; and d. CALABARZON, 2.62 thousand metric tons.

Distribution of Carabao Inventory By Classification Philippines: as of June 2023 • As of 30 June 2023, the total carabao inventory was estimated at 2.73 million heads. • This indicates a decline of -1.2 percent from its previous year’s same period count of 2.77 million heads. • 99.1 percent of the country’s carabao population came from smallhold farms, while the remaining 0.8 percent and 0.1 percent were from semi-commercial and commercial farms, respectively. • Bicol Region recorded the highest carabao population with 322.85 thousand heads as of 30 June 2023. This was followed by Western Visayas and Central Luzon with corresponding inventories of 256.33 thousand heads and 249.99 thousand heads. • These three regions shared 30.3 percent to the country’s total carabao population during the period.

Average Farmgate price and Annual Growth rate of Farmgate Price of Carabao for Slaughter, Philippines April-June 2021-2023 • The average farmgate price of carabao for slaughter was quoted at PhP 144.56 per kilogram, liveweight during the quarter. • This reflects a decrease of -5.4 percent from the previous year’s same period average farmgate price of PhP 152.85 per kilogram, liveweight. • In the second quarter of 2023, the highest average farmgate price was observed in June at PhP 148.49 per kilogram, liveweight, while the lowest average farmgate price was recorded in May at PhP 138.64 per kilogram, liveweight.
  • 7. Swine Situation Report, April to June 2023 • The volume of hog production from April to June 2023 was recorded at 422.72 thousand metric tons, liveweight. This indicates an annual increase of 1.0 percent from the 418.40 thousand metric tons, liveweight output in the same period of 2022. • Central Visayas was the top producer of hog with 54.44 thousand metric tons, liveweight or 12.9 percent share to the total hog production during the period. Completing the top five regions with the highest volume of hog production at liveweight during the quarter were the following: a. CALABARZON with 53.84 thousand metric tons; b. Northern Mindanao with 50.98 thousand metric tons; c. Central Luzon with 42.35 thousand metric tons; and d. Western Visayas with 42.03 thousand metric tons. • These regions accounted for 57.6 percent share to the country’s total hog production during the period.
  • 8. Distribution of Swine Inventory by Classification Philippines: as of June 2023 • As of 30 June 2023, the country’s total swine inventory was estimated at 10.07 million heads. This was 1.4 percent higher than the previous year’s same period count of 9.94 million heads. • About 67.5 percent of the country’s swine population came from smallhold farms, while the remaining 29.2 percent and 3.2 percent were from commercial and semi-commercial farms, respectively. • CALABARZON recorded the highest swine population of 1.30 million heads as of 30 June 2023. This was followed by Central Visayas and Northern Mindanao with corresponding inventories of 1.17 million heads and 1.12 million heads. • These three regions accounted for 35.6 percent share to the country’s total swine population during the period.

Average Farmgate Price and Annual Growth rate of Farmgate Price of Hogs for Slaughter, Philippines April-June 2021-2023 • The average farmgate price of hogs for slaughter was quoted at PhP 169.73 per kilogram, liveweight for this quarter. • This registers a decrease of -5.1 percent from the previous year’s same quarter quotation of PhP 178.86 per kilogram, liveweight. • In the second quarter of 2023, the highest average farmgate price was recorded in June at PhP 171.85 per kilogram, liveweight, while the lowest average farmgate price was noted in May at PhP 168.32 per kilogram, liveweight.
  • 10. Goat Situation Report, April to June 2023 • The volume of goat production from April to June 2023 was recorded at 16.32 thousand metric tons, liveweight. This indicates an annual decline of -0.2 percent from the 16.36 thousand metric tons, liveweight output in the same period of 2022. • Northern Mindanao was the top producer of goat with 2.01 thousand metric tons, liveweight or 12.3 percent share to the total goat production during the reference quarter. Completing the top five regions with the highest volume of goat production at liveweight in the second quarter of 2023 were the following: a. Central Visayas, 1.97 thousand metric tons; b. Davao Region, 1.78 thousand metric tons; c. Western Visayas, 1.68 thousand metric tons; and d. Ilocos Region, 1.67 thousand metric tons. • These regions accounted for 55.8 percent share to the country’s total goat production during the quarter.
  • 11. Distribution of Goat Inventory by Classification Philippines: as of June 2023 • As of 30 June 2023, the total goat inventory was estimated at 3.88 million heads. This reflects a decrease of -0.5 percent compared with the previous year’s same period count of 3.90 million heads. • About 99.3 percent of the country’s goat population came from smallhold farms, while semi-commercial and commercial farms contributed 0.4 percent and 0.3 percent, respectively. • Central Visayas recorded the highest goat population with 608.22 thousand heads. This was followed by Central Luzon and Western Visayas with corresponding inventories of 447.64 thousand heads and 434.83 thousand heads. • These three regions shared 38.4 percent to the country’s total goat population as of 30 June 2023.

Average Farmgate price and Annual Growth rate of Farmgate Price of Goat for Slaughter, Philippines April-June 2021- 2023 • The average farmgate price of goat for slaughter was quoted at PhP 230.65 per kilogram, liveweight for this quarter. This was 7.3 percent higher than the previous year’s same period average farmgate price of PhP 215.03 per kilogram, liveweight. • In the second quarter of 2023, the highest average farmgate price was observed in May at PhP 235.53 per kilogram, liveweight, while the lowest average farmgate price was recorded in June at PhP 222.74 per kilogram, liveweight.

Chicken Situation Report, April to June 2023 • The volume of total chicken production from April to June 2023 was recorded at 477.76 thousand metric tons, liveweight, indicating an annual growth of 3.2 percent from the 463.12 thousand metric tons, liveweight output in the same period of 2022. • Central Luzon was the top producer of chicken with 154.12 thousand metric tons, liveweight or 32.3 percent share to the total chicken production during the reference quarter. Completing the top five regions with the highest volume of chicken production at liveweight in the second quarter of 2023 were the following: a. CALABARZON, 93.90 thousand metric tons; b. Northern Mindanao, 39.08 thousand metric tons; c. Western Visayas, 32.22 thousand metric tons; and d. Central Visayas, 29.67 thousand metric tons. • These regions accounted for 73.0 percent share to the country’s total chicken production during the quarter.
  • 14. Distribution of Chicken Inventory by Type Philippines: as of June 30 2023 • As of 30 June 2023, the total chicken inventory reached 200.21 million birds. This was 2.8 percent higher than the previous year’s same period count of 194.71 million birds. Population of native/improved chicken and broiler chicken improved by 6.2 percent and 1.2 percent, respectively. Meanwhile, layer chicken stocks reported a reduction of -0.9 percent. • Of the total chicken inventory, native/improved chicken accounted for 43.3 percent, followed by broiler chicken with 34.5 percent share, and layer chicken with 22.2 percent share. • The highest chicken inventory was noted in Central Luzon with 33.68 million birds. This was followed by CALABARZON with 27.32 million birds and Northern Mindanao with 25.87 million birds. These regions accounted for 43.4 percent share to the country’s total chicken inventory during the period. • The highest inventory of native/improved chicken was recorded in Western Visayas with 12.91 million birds. Central Luzon reported the highest inventory of broiler chicken with 18.48 million birds, while CALABARZON had the highest layer chicken stocks with 16.35 million birds.

Average Farmgate price and Annual Rate of Farmagate price of Broiler chicken April-June 2021-2023 • The average farmgate price of broiler chicken at PhP 134.13 per kilogram, liveweight during the quarter recorded a decline of -2.4 percent from its previous year’s same period average farmgate price of PhP 137.39 per kilogram, liveweight. • In the second quarter of 2023, the highest average farmgate price was quoted in June at PhP 140.25 per kilogram, liveweight, while the lowest average farmgate price was noted in May at PhP 129.99 per kilogram, liveweight.
  • 16. Duck Situation Report, April to June 2023 • The volume of duck production from April to June 2023 was recorded at 6.74 thousand metric tons, liveweight. This indicates an increase of 7.1 percent from the same period of 2022 level of 6.29 thousand metric tons, liveweight. This level of production in the second quarter of 2023 was a recovery from the annual decline of -7.5 percent recorded in the same quarter of 2022. • By region, Central Luzon was the top producer of duck with 1.95 thousand metric tons, liveweight or 28.9 percent share to the total duck production during the quarter. Completing the top five regions with the highest volume of duck production at liveweight in the second quarter of 2023 were the following: a. SOCCSKSARGEN, 1.23 thousand metric tons; b. Northern Mindanao, 0.71 thousand metric tons; c. Western Visayas, 0.64 thousand metric tons; and d. Cagayan Valley, 0.62 thousand metric tons. • These regions accounted for 76.4 percent of the country’s total duck production during the quarter.
  • 17. Distribution of Duck Inventory by classification Philippines: as of June 30 • As of 30 June 2023, the total duck inventory was estimated at 14.52 million birds. This was 7.0 percent higher than the previous year’s same period count of 13.57 million birds. About 66.1 percent of the country’s duck population came from smallhold farms, while the remaining 31.2 percent and 2.7 percent were from semi-commercial and commercial farms, respectively. • Central Luzon recorded the highest duck population of 5.03 million birds as of 30 June 2023. This was followed by Cagayan Valley and SOCCSKSARGEN with corresponding inventories of 1.55 million birds and 1.46 million birds. These three regions accounted for 55.4 percent of the country’s total duck population during the period.
  • 18. Average Farmgate price and annual Growth rate of Farmgate price of Duck egg (April to June 2023 • The average farmgate price of duck egg for the second quarter of 2023 was quoted at PhP 8.71 per piece. This was 9.7 percent higher than the previous year’s same quarter average farmgate price of PhP 7.94 per piece. (Figure 3) • In the second quarter of 2023, the highest average farmgate price was recorded in April at PhP 8.96 per piece, while the lowest average farmgate price was quoted in May at PhP 8.51 per piece.
  • 19. Relevant technical terms used in animal husbandry • Artificial insemination is the placing of sperm in the female reproductive tract by other than natural means • Bitch - An adult female dog • Boar - An adult uncastrated male pig used for breeding. • Bos indicus - Bos indicus is humped cattle found in tropical countries. • Bos Taurus - Bos taurus is the domestic cattle originating from either the Aurochs or the Celtic shorthorn. • Bovine - is a generic name for cattle. • Breed - is a group of animals with distinct shapes and colors which produce offspring with similar shapes and colors. • Breeding Bull or Stud Bull - An adult male used for breeding. • Buck is a male of such species as goats, deer, rabbits, etc; an intact mature male goat. • Bull is a male of bovine of any age that has not been castrated. • Bullock or Steer: An adult castrated male used for carting and tillage • Burdizzo is an instrument used for bloodless castration which clamps off the tissue connecting the testis to the rest of the body. • Calf is a beef animal under one year of age

  1. In comparison to their levels in the same quarter of 2022, 10 regions posted decreases in production during the quarter. In terms of level, Ilocos Region posted the highest decrease of 0.76 thousand metric tons, from 6.52 thousand metric tons in the second quarter of 2022 to 5.76 thousand metric tons in the same quarter of 2023.
  2. These regions accounted for 46.9 percent of the country’s total carabao production during the quarter. Relative  to  their outputs  in the same quarter of 2022, 11 regions registered increments in production during the period. In terms of level, Central Visayas recorded the highest increase of 0.34 thousand metric tons, from 1.38 thousand metric tons in the second quarter of 2022 to 1.72 thousand metric tons in the same quarter of 2023.

In terms of level, Central Visayas registered the highest decline of 0.24 thousand metric tons, from 2.22 thousand metric tons in the second quarter of 2022 to 1.97 thousand metric tons this second quarter of 2023.
  5. Compared with their outputs in the same quarter of 2022, nine regions recorded increases in duck production during the period. In terms of level, Central Luzon recorded the highest increment of 0.49 thousand metric tons, from 1.46 thousand metric tons in the second quarter of 2022 to 1.95 thousand metric tons in the same quarter of 2023.
