GRADUATE OF 2014
My Shining Path at CLA
Speech by Justin Landrum
I’ve had the best four years of my life thus far at Citizen Learning Academy. This school
is like no other. I’ve had so many great experiences here. I doubt if I would have had a
unique learning experience at a public school. I’ve learned many skills and seen many
new things. I’ve been on many field trips to the Los Angeles County Fair, and the Long
Beach Aquarium. Thanks to CLA, I know American Sign Language. I can read and play
music. I can write paragraphs, essays, and I can type 40 wpm.
I consider the teachers and staff to be family to me. They’ve all touched my life in
different ways. My teachers have taught me how to laugh at myself, and helped me
grow as a person. I owe the wonderful times I’ve had here to one special person, Mrs.
Crystal Ingram. I thank her and everyone at CLA. I’ve learned to appreciate the positive
things in my life. I almost passed up this chance because of the uniform requirement
and the size of the school. Luckily I didn’t. Otherwise, I may not be the person I am
today. They’ve broadened my horizons and given me experiences that I wouldn’t have
had anywhere else. I’ve learned to be more confident and reach for higher goals.
Thanks to my time here at CLA, I’ve had the opportunity to express myself in art and
computer graphics. Most importantly, I’ve learned to put my best foot forward. From
now on I will always do my best. I won’t give up so easily anymore. I’ll stand my
ground. I won’t just try, I’ll do it. I will always Make It Shine.
Justin Landrum
What “They” Want From Me
Show the true me get scolded
No good rhyme or reason.
Why? I do not know.
So, now I will not show the real me,
I must conform.
I must become something else.
I will become what they want
and give up my true self.
Don’t You Wanna Be Cool?
C’mon it’ll be fun everyone’s doing it.
You wanna be cool right?
Nope!
I won’t give into you
or to anyone else.
I’ll have fun my own way.
I’ll laugh and play.
Wasted Potential
It’s depressing to see a star not shine as
bright as it should.
A race care going 2 MPH,
not reaching it’s full potential.
A lion getting chased by a Chihuahua.
A red wood cut down by spork.
Being able to do anything,
But wanting to do nothing.
You can do it, yet you choose not to.

Christmas Poems
The Grinch found Christmas Joy
And gave all the toys he stole back to the children.
He was so happy
that his heart grew three sizes
and everyone danced
Til’ their feet were sore and ate
til their bellies were full.
It was the best Christmas feast ever
and Fun was in the air.
Roses are red violets are blue
Christmas is here and Joy is in the air
People are singing
And lights are gleaming
When we go to sleep
It is peaceful.

Life
Life has ups and downs.
It has winners and losers,
but every day
we have to keep on.
It’s a fight every day
and it doesn’t matter
if we win or lose.
It’s about the fight of life,
love, trust, loyalty, and family.
As long as we keep fighting for
what we love,
we win the fight no matter how bad
we get beat up.
Seasons
It’s crazy
how the seasons differ.
The heart
can describe the season somehow.
The cool calm heart
is Autumn.
The ice cold careless heart
is Winter.
The fiery hot heart
is the summer.
The mixed feeling heart
is the perfect season.
Spring shows all the emotions
in the heart, and that is why
Spring
is the Best season to start.

My Experiences at CLA
I’ve had many rewarding experiences at Citizen Learning Academy. I’ve been here for a
long time. I’ve been at Citizen Learning Academy since elementary school, and now I’m
going to the 12th grade. The progress I’ve made since being here has given me the
opportunity to participate in dual enrollment at Inglewood High School. I spend a
portion of my day at Citizen Learning Academy and then Mr. or Mrs. Ingram will give me
a ride to Inglewood High School in the afternoon.
In addition to our regular school curriculum, we go on amazing field trips. Every year we
go to the Los Angeles County Fair. We also go to the African American Museum, Knott’s
Berry Farm, and the City Hall to celebrate the cultures of American Indians, African
Americans, Asian and Latin Americans, at the Mayor’s office.
Every time we go on field trips, I learn something new. The teachers here go above and
beyond the call of duty to help us grow academically and socially.
I am proud to be a member of the CLA family. I know that I will continue to mature in
every area of my life, as I approach my senior year. I am looking forward to more
rewarding experiences in the upcoming year.

In Memory of Mr. Curtis Davidson
Mr. Davidson was a great teacher.
He taught me violence never solved anything,
and that people are all the same.
He taught me how levies operate
and how they affected the people of New Orleans
when they broke after Hurricane Katrina.
He taught many science projects
and helped me understand math.
I learned Mr. Davidson was a war hero
and he was very brave.
I will always remember Mr. Davidson as my hero.

I Wish To Have Peace
My wish is for peace.
I say this because we need to all come together.
Killing each other over nothing is crazy.
Babies are getting killed.
Young children are dying.
Old people are being robbed and killed.
People are giving up too fast.
When we really need to take the time
and think about the things we do.
God is here for us.
Daijanna Lockridge
Light A Candle For Peace
My wish is for peace
and for gang violence to stop.
Racism and racial remarks between
Blacks and Browns need to stop.
Unity will improve
prejudice and misunderstanding.
Self pride, respect, and self motivation is needed
to strive for something better in life.
Young women will have more
choices and opportunities.
to have a better country.
Violence needs to stop in life,
so people can live better lives,
without worrying about getting killed.

PAST CLA POETS
Thomas Favors
2010 Graduate
Speech
I can’t change the world, but I can change myself, and the things I do to
make my mark in the world. Making small changes every day is my way
of taking and making it better for my family and me. Changing my
attitudes and behaviors is how I will change how I see the world. I can
change the world by how I choose to communicate with others. I want
little kids to see me go the right way and not the wrong way. I will
change the way I act at home to make it good for me, my mom, my
brothers, and my Uncle Russell.
By changing, hopefully, that will help change the world. I’ve learned how
to read and improved my math and understanding of Algebra and
Geometry.
I’ve learned that if I work hard, I will see positive results. I have also
learned that when I make mistakes, I can forgive myself and ask for
forgiveness from myself and others. I have learned to be proud of my
accomplishments. Graduation from high school is not the end, but my
beginning to improving myself.

Tears made it even worse
Cries made it hurt
From New Orleans.
We stand on a sturdy roof top
Wishing for a chance.
We called her Katrina,
She sunk the city
Leaving people for gone
And making their life minus long.
It shocked the world that the wild city was
gone…
Channel 2, 5, 7, and 11 filled the gossip.
Just in! Just In! Just In!

Dropped
Insanity, insane hurt, hatred became our rage.

Its after effect really made all of us cry.

Cultural Poem
Black people have good hair and pretty eyes.
We can dance and have our unique way of communicating.
Sometimes we can get carried away when things don’t go our way.
We can be funny, happy and smile when things are going good.
We get frustrated when things go bad,
But we can also make others laugh.
We care and love others.
We’re smart and can help others in need.
We try to stay healthy and keep our skin clear.
We are energetic and sometimes calm.
When it comes to school, and working on a job,
we do our Best.
I think we as Black people created a lot of things,
like freeways, street lights, television, and other inventions.
We continue to live as life goes on…
We continue to help other and take Pride in ourselves.

  • 9. GRADUATE OF 2014 My Shining Path at CLA Speech by Justin Landrum I’ve had the best four years of my life thus far at Citizen Learning Academy. This school is like no other. I’ve had so many great experiences here. I doubt if I would have had a unique learning experience at a public school. I’ve learned many skills and seen many new things. I’ve been on many field trips to the Los Angeles County Fair, and the Long Beach Aquarium. Thanks to CLA, I know American Sign Language. I can read and play music. I can write paragraphs, essays, and I can type 40 wpm. I consider the teachers and staff to be family to me. They’ve all touched my life in different ways. My teachers have taught me how to laugh at myself, and helped me grow as a person. I owe the wonderful times I’ve had here to one special person, Mrs. Crystal Ingram. I thank her and everyone at CLA. I’ve learned to appreciate the positive things in my life. I almost passed up this chance because of the uniform requirement and the size of the school. Luckily I didn’t. Otherwise, I may not be the person I am today. They’ve broadened my horizons and given me experiences that I wouldn’t have had anywhere else. I’ve learned to be more confident and reach for higher goals. Thanks to my time here at CLA, I’ve had the opportunity to express myself in art and computer graphics. Most importantly, I’ve learned to put my best foot forward. From now on I will always do my best. I won’t give up so easily anymore. I’ll stand my ground. I won’t just try, I’ll do it. I will always Make It Shine.
  • 10. Justin Landrum What “They” Want From Me Show the true me get scolded No good rhyme or reason. Why? I do not know. So, now I will not show the real me, I must conform. I must become something else. I will become what they want and give up my true self. Don’t You Wanna Be Cool? C’mon it’ll be fun everyone’s doing it. You wanna be cool right? Nope! I won’t give into you or to anyone else. I’ll have fun my own way. I’ll laugh and play. Wasted Potential It’s depressing to see a star not shine as bright as it should. A race care going 2 MPH, not reaching it’s full potential. A lion getting chased by a Chihuahua. A red wood cut down by spork. Being able to do anything, But wanting to do nothing. You can do it, yet you choose not to.

It’s ok to be good and it’s ok to be smart, because you are helping the Planet Earth Christmas Poems The Grinch found Christmas Joy And gave all the toys he stole back to the children. He was so happy that his heart grew three sizes and everyone danced Til’ their feet were sore and ate til their bellies were full. It was the best Christmas feast ever and Fun was in the air. Roses are red violets are blue Christmas is here and Joy is in the air People are singing And lights are gleaming When we go to sleep It is peaceful.
  • 13. Toy Andrews Life Life has ups and downs. It has winners and losers, but every day we have to keep on. It’s a fight every day and it doesn’t matter if we win or lose. It’s about the fight of life, love, trust, loyalty, and family. As long as we keep fighting for what we love, we win the fight no matter how bad we get beat up. Seasons It’s crazy how the seasons differ. The heart can describe the season somehow. The cool calm heart is Autumn. The ice cold careless heart is Winter. The fiery hot heart is the summer. The mixed feeling heart is the perfect season. Spring shows all the emotions in the heart, and that is why Spring is the Best season to start.
  • 14. Toy Andrews My Experiences at CLA I’ve had many rewarding experiences at Citizen Learning Academy. I’ve been here for a long time. I’ve been at Citizen Learning Academy since elementary school, and now I’m going to the 12th grade. The progress I’ve made since being here has given me the opportunity to participate in dual enrollment at Inglewood High School. I spend a portion of my day at Citizen Learning Academy and then Mr. or Mrs. Ingram will give me a ride to Inglewood High School in the afternoon. In addition to our regular school curriculum, we go on amazing field trips. Every year we go to the Los Angeles County Fair. We also go to the African American Museum, Knott’s Berry Farm, and the City Hall to celebrate the cultures of American Indians, African Americans, Asian and Latin Americans, at the Mayor’s office. Every time we go on field trips, I learn something new. The teachers here go above and beyond the call of duty to help us grow academically and socially. I am proud to be a member of the CLA family. I know that I will continue to mature in every area of my life, as I approach my senior year. I am looking forward to more rewarding experiences in the upcoming year.
  • 15. GENARO SMITH Valentine’s Day Roses are red. Violets are blue. I am glad to spend my life with you. From the graves below, to the heavens. I will always be there for you to love.
  • 16. LAMAR GREENE In Memory of Mr. Curtis Davidson Mr. Davidson was a great teacher. He taught me violence never solved anything, and that people are all the same. He taught me how levies operate and how they affected the people of New Orleans when they broke after Hurricane Katrina. He taught many science projects and helped me understand math. I learned Mr. Davidson was a war hero and he was very brave. I will always remember Mr. Davidson as my hero.
  • 17. Lamar Greene Heart & Soul Heart and soul together as one forever… Alone tonight As one will never know when their time is up. Til’ their heart and soul are at peace. Blue Skies Colorful rays upon my head. Shining bright without dread. Cool blue skies are beautiful. So why are they so colorful? Will I every know? I really hope so. Chambers When you are alone you are in chambers. Even though someone is there who will be there for you. Your mom and dad will stick with you through thick and thin. Together forever until the end of time. Ultraviolet Light Visible light is what we can see, but why is that? We can’t see ultraviolet lights, so don’t even try to. The way you look at the light is how you see it. God we have eyes.
  • 18. Lamar Greene Rainbows Rainbows are so colorful. They are so cool. So why are they so bright, Shining in my eyes? Death Pieces of candy dropping on the ground is like being a King on top of a castle. The Knights are in their armor fighting to the death. They go about their life protecting us. Thank you Sir Knight You will be alright. Hugs and Kisses Hugs and kisses Hearts that bloom Dogs and cats that play til’ noon City people coming and going and saying hello. What a beautiful hot sunny day! With the sun in the way. Christmas Time The true meaning of Christmas Is spending time with your family and having a good time. So don’t ask for anything this Christmas. Just be with your family. Jesus died for your sins.
  • 19. Michael Tatum I Wish To Have Peace My wish is for peace. I say this because we need to all come together. Killing each other over nothing is crazy. Babies are getting killed. Young children are dying. Old people are being robbed and killed. People are giving up too fast. When we really need to take the time and think about the things we do. God is here for us. Daijanna Lockridge Light A Candle For Peace My wish is for peace and for gang violence to stop. Racism and racial remarks between Blacks and Browns need to stop. Unity will improve prejudice and misunderstanding. Self pride, respect, and self motivation is needed to strive for something better in life. Young women will have more choices and opportunities. to have a better country. Violence needs to stop in life, so people can live better lives, without worrying about getting killed.

  • 22. Thomas Favors 2010 Graduate Speech I can’t change the world, but I can change myself, and the things I do to make my mark in the world. Making small changes every day is my way of taking and making it better for my family and me. Changing my attitudes and behaviors is how I will change how I see the world. I can change the world by how I choose to communicate with others. I want little kids to see me go the right way and not the wrong way. I will change the way I act at home to make it good for me, my mom, my brothers, and my Uncle Russell. By changing, hopefully, that will help change the world. I’ve learned how to read and improved my math and understanding of Algebra and Geometry. I’ve learned that if I work hard, I will see positive results. I have also learned that when I make mistakes, I can forgive myself and ask for forgiveness from myself and others. I have learned to be proud of my accomplishments. Graduation from high school is not the end, but my beginning to improving myself.

  • 30. Joel Blease Cultural Poem Black people have good hair and pretty eyes. We can dance and have our unique way of communicating. Sometimes we can get carried away when things don’t go our way. We can be funny, happy and smile when things are going good. We get frustrated when things go bad, But we can also make others laugh. We care and love others. We’re smart and can help others in need. We try to stay healthy and keep our skin clear. We are energetic and sometimes calm. When it comes to school, and working on a job, we do our Best. I think we as Black people created a lot of things, like freeways, street lights, television, and other inventions. We continue to live as life goes on… We continue to help other and take Pride in ourselves.
