2014 US Meat and Poultry recalls
summarised
On 16 January the United States Department of
Agriculture (USDA) published a summary of the meat
and poultry products recalled in the US in 2014.
The number of recalls has generally increased over
the past decade; despite Class I recalls still making
up the majority, Class II and even Class III recalls
have steadily been increasing. Of the 94 recalls,
totalling some 18,675,102 lb of products, 63 Class
I recalls accounted for 14,261,888 lb as a result of
lack of inspection, metal fragment contamination and
temperature abuse in the distribution chain to name
but a few. Undeclared allergens were the leading
cause of recalls (43 cases) in 2014 while STEC,
Listeria monocytogenes and salmonella accounted
for 16 recalls. A further breakdown of the recall data
by species; poultry (including egg products) was the
most frequently recalled product followed by pork and
then beef. To access the USDA’s Summary of 2014
Recall Cases, please click here.
US$205 million seizure of smuggled rice in
China
Over 210,000 tons of smuggled rice worth 1.26
billion yuan (US$205 million) was seized in China in
2014 according to recent reports by customs official
Zhu Feng of the anti-smuggling bureau of General
Administration of Customs (GAC). Zhu said some
467 cases linked to rice in 2014 were investigated as
a result of a local initiative against the smuggling of
agricultural products. The campaign, dubbed ‘Green
Wind’, targeted predominantly grains, frozen meat
products, sugar, cotton and cooking oil. He said,
however, that the total value of smuggled goods
recovered during the campaign was a staggering
44.9 billion yuan, which is up 96 percent from the
previous year. Zhu stated that these illegal activities
evaded taxation, damaged the Chinese agricultural
industry and also posed serious food safety hazards
due to non-existent controls, inspections and
quarantine checks and unsanitary transportation
methods. The smuggling of agricultural products
into China is soaring because of the nation’s rising
cost of food, according to the GAC. Wang Hua,
a spokeswoman for the GAC, said “Huge price
differences between China and some foreign
countries, such as some African and Southeast Asian
countries, and the improved production capacity and
the low cost of labour in those countries, have mainly
contributed to the sharp rise in smuggling”. China has
been racked by a series of high-profile food safety
scandals over the last couple of years which has
deeply undermined public trust in food safety and can
ill-afford yet more dubious food items from making
their way into open markets.

Campylobacteriosis still the most commonly
reported foodborne illness in the EU
On 28 January, the European Food Safety Authority
(EFSA) and the European Centre for Disease
Prevention and Control (ECDC) stated that
campylobacteriosis infections reported in humans
have now stabilised for the first time in several years
after an increasing trend; one of the key findings of
the European Union Summary Report on Trends and
Sources of Zoonoses, Zoonotic Agents and Food-
borne Outbreaks in 2013. The 2013 figures are back
to similar levels first reported in 2012, although with
214,779 cases, campylobacteriosis still remains the
most commonly reported foodborne illness in the EU
since 2005.
But just as the case count for campylobacteriosis
seems to have stabilised, listeriosis cases have
increased by 8.6 percent between 2012 and 2013
and have steadily been increasing over the past five
years. What is notable in this instance is that despite
the number of listeriosis cases being relatively low at
1,763, comparatively speaking the infections tend to
be more severe with higher death rates than those for
any of the other foodborne illnesses. Mike Catchpole,
Chief Scientist at ECDC, stated that ‘The rise of
reported invasive listeriosis cases is of great concern
as the infection is acquired mostly from ready-to-eat
food and it may lead to death, particularly among the
increasing population of elderly people and patients
with weakened immunity in Europe’.
