1) The document discusses how the chemical diacetyl used in microwave popcorn's "butter flavoring" has caused a lung disease called bronchiolitis obliterans in popcorn factory workers and may also pose risks to consumers. A government agency was warned about this risk but did not adequately respond.
2) Factory farming, which confines thousands of animals in tight spaces, dominates U.S. meat production and causes environmental and health problems. A new map shows where these factory farms are concentrated. Consumers are impacted by the antibiotic and hormone use in these systems.
3) Recent large meat recalls and various food safety issues over the past year and a half have undermined consumer confidence in food safety.
Food safety white paper sept 2015 finalGraeme Cross
Aon's recently published paper which focuses on the topic of food safety. It provides an overview of a supplies view and some guidance on best practice
The 411 on Food Safety: How to Protect Your Family's Plate: A big part of being healthy is how we feed our bodies. How do you protect your family’s plate against chemical pesticides, food borne illness and other contaminants? How do you track product recalls? Who do you turn to for trustworthy advice on food safety? We’ll answer all those questions and much more!
Did you know…
o CDC estimates that each year roughly 1 in 6 Americans (or 48 million people) gets sick, 128,000 are hospitalized, and 3,000 die of foodborne diseases?
o Most produce travels an average of 1,500 miles and is touched by over 20 sets of hands?
o Contaminated food can carry bacteria and parasites that stays dormant in your body for years, affecting your body’s absorption of vital nutrients?
o Product recalls have more than doubled since 1999, are announced almost daily, which can affect your family’s health?
The document summarizes a workshop on the future of global fresh produce safety for retail and foodservice. It discusses how produce-related foodborne outbreaks have increased in recent decades. It also outlines steps taken by the FDA and other groups to improve produce safety, such as guidance documents, action plans, and regulatory programs in states like California and Florida. The future of produce safety will require consistent standards and practices across the supply chain to prevent contamination and illness.
The document discusses new legislation and regulations around food safety in the United States. It outlines the Food Safety Modernization Act, which aims to modernize the food safety system by shifting from reactive to preventative response. Key points of the new law include increased mandatory inspections of domestic and foreign facilities by the FDA, requiring food safety plans and prevention controls, and more import certification requirements for foreign exporters. The changes are expected to significantly impact Chinese exporters through new registration, record access, inspection and food safety standard requirements.
This document discusses the benefits of third party food safety audits and outlines some issues that have arisen due to failures in the auditing process. It summarizes two major food safety crises in the US linked to failures of third party audits, highlighting the need for more rigorous auditing standards and processes. The document advocates for harmonized global food safety standards, process-based auditing, ensuring auditor competency, and the role of certification bodies in continuously improving food safety.
A food recall is when a product is removed from the market or; a correction is made to the product because it is either defective or potentially harmful
The mere word “recall” can send a shudder all the way through a company, from receptionist to the executive team, to the boardroom and shareholders. Recalls are costly and risky and can threaten the existence of a company.
Proposition 65 in the State of California and the DINP transition for Vinyl G...Trevor Lee
This document discusses Proposition 65 in California, which requires warnings for chemicals known to cause cancer or birth defects. It focuses on the inclusion of DINP (diisononyl phthalate) in vinyl gloves. DINP was added to Proposition 65's list of chemicals due to evidence it causes cancer. By December 2014, manufacturers selling DINP-containing products in California must remove DINP or label it. The document examines potential health risks of DINP in gloves and solutions manufacturers can take to comply with Proposition 65 regulations.
A newsletter roundup of recent news stories, including updates on the ongoing Takata airbag investigation, the Porter Ranch gas leak, and the percentage of drivers who engage in unsafe behavior while behind the wheel.
This document discusses product recalls and how companies can mitigate risks and losses. It describes Blue Bell Creameries' recall of all its ice cream products in 2015 after a listeriosis outbreak linked to its desserts caused illnesses and deaths. Blue Bell took corrective actions like thoroughly cleaning plants and improving sanitization procedures. The document also discusses a recall by Trek Bicycle of nearly 1 million bikes due to a risk of their front wheels separating. Both companies worked closely with regulators during their recalls. The impacts of recalls, importance of prevention, and role of social media are also addressed.
In 2015, an estimated 35,500 serious birth defects of the spine and brain were prevented because wheat and maize flours were fortified with folic acid, according to research published in July 2016.
The document discusses several unethical practices in the food industry from production to marketing. At the production stage, large corporations like Tyson, Smithfield, and KFC are accused of inhumane treatment of animals. Nestle was found to still use child labor in cocoa farms despite promises to stop. Monsanto uses questionable genetic engineering techniques. Improper use of chemicals, water, and false labeling are other issues. Misleading marketing claims by Complan, Horlicks, Red Bull and Tropicana show unethical advertising. Nestle promoted infant formula in poor nations irresponsibly. Overall, the text calls for more humane, environmentally friendly, and transparent practices across the food supply chain.
Aon Food & Drink Inperspective Winter 2015Graeme Cross
This document summarizes an issue of a magazine focused on risks and insurance issues for the food and drink industry. It discusses how Morrisons supermarket has worked with Aon to improve its business continuity planning across its 25 manufacturing, processing, and distribution sites in the UK. It also discusses proposed changes to EU food safety guidelines and whether these could encourage innovation from food companies while still protecting consumers. Additionally, it examines how food and drink companies can better account for weather impacts on sales through historical data analysis rather than simply blaming poor weather.

Product recall and contamination insurance provides coverage for costs associated with product recalls and contamination events. Key costs include pre-recall expenses, recall costs such as notifying customers and destroying contaminated product, crisis management services, loss of income, and in some policies, liability to third parties affected. Recent laws increase the risk of recalls and the ability of the FDA to mandate recalls. Recalls can cost companies millions and even cause bankruptcy without insurance. Many industries that produce and distribute food and beverages would benefit from this type of coverage.

The new IFRS 9 rules effective January 2018, and equivalent US GAAP standards (ASU 2016-13) effective in 2019, are aimed at
increasing the accuracy and transparency of how credit risk is represented on a company’s Balance Sheet and P&L. Both new
standards include requirements around the use of both historic as well as forward looking credit information in order to calculate

Many businesses and governments have been reporting on environmental and climate data for over 15 years now, but the way they do is set to change. Following the UN’s Paris

system. After the 2008 financial crisis, regulators do not want any disorderly transitions in the market due to a misallocation of capital
Aon has developed a proprietary diagnostic tool to help risk leaders quickly assess their organization’s global supply chain exposures across a variety of key marketplace supply chain indicators.
In the complex and dynamic global risk environment, risk managers play an increasingly vital role in helping their organizations understand, prioritize and manage critical exposures affecting their operations and supply chains.
Today, along with catastrophic property risks, expanding cyber threats, terrorism, supplier insolvency, product integrity and reputational issues, businesses relying on global supply chains must navigate widening geopolitical challenges brought by rising nationalism.
As business leaders, planning, finance and operations executives strive to anticipate how these developments might affect their cross-border trade relationships, effective and forward-looking supply chain risk management is critical to sound decision-making. Aon’s Supply Chain Diagnostic helps clients flag supply chain vulnerabilities and improve resiliency.

Understanding User Needs and Satisfying ThemAggregage
https://www.productmanagementtoday.com/frs/26903918/understanding-user-needs-and-satisfying-them
We know we want to create products which our customers find to be valuable. Whether we label it as customer-centric or product-led depends on how long we've been doing product management. There are three challenges we face when doing this. The obvious challenge is figuring out what our users need; the non-obvious challenges are in creating a shared understanding of those needs and in sensing if what we're doing is meeting those needs.
In this webinar, we won't focus on the research methods for discovering user-needs. We will focus on synthesis of the needs we discover, communication and alignment tools, and how we operationalize addressing those needs.
Industry expert Scott Sehlhorst will:
• Introduce a taxonomy for user goals with real world examples
• Present the Onion Diagram, a tool for contextualizing task-level goals
• Illustrate how customer journey maps capture activity-level and task-level goals
• Demonstrate the best approach to selection and prioritization of user-goals to address
• Highlight the crucial benchmarks, observable changes, in ensuring fulfillment of customer needs

Largest Automotive Recall in History
Expands to 34 Million Vehicles
On May 19th, U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx announced that air bag manufacturer
Takata has acknowledged that a defect exists in its air bag inflators. These inflators were made
with a propellant that can degrade over time and has led to ruptures that have been blamed for
six deaths worldwide. The action expands the number of vehicles to be recalled for defective
Takata inflators to nearly 34 million. This latest expansion of the Takata recall doubles the
original number of vehicles affected making it the largest automotive recall in U.S. history.
In all, eleven automakers have been involved in the recall.
It’s anticipated that the remedy of vehicles will be prioritized based upon risk, with the vehicles
that present the greatest risk in terms of age and geographic location to be serviced first.
Testing and investigation by Takata, auto manufacturers, and independent researchers have
not yet established a definitive root cause of the inflator malfunctions. NHTSA’s analysis of
test results and engineering reports from independent organizations points to moisture
infiltrating the defective inflators over extended periods of time as a factor. Over time, that
moisture causes changes in the structure of the chemical propellant that ignites when an air
bag deploys. The degraded propellant ignites too quickly, producing excess pressure that
causes the inflator to rupture and sends metal shards into the passenger cabin that can lead
to serious injury or death.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) issued a Consent Order to Takata
requiring the company to cooperate in all future regulatory actions that NHTSA undertakes in
its ongoing investigation and oversight of Takata. In addition, NHTSA announced its intent to
begin a formal legal process to organize and prioritize the replacement of defective Takata
inflators under the agency’s legal authority.

2. Faster Tests for Listeria Detection Are Hitting the Market
Listeria is a very scary pathogen. Not only because
it is the third leading cause of death among
foodborne illnesses, but it also has the ability to
thrive at freezing temperatures and is extremely
difficulty to eradicate once it sets up camp in a food
processing plant. Listeria contamination has been
responsible for some of the largest food recalls
as of late, such as Blue Bell Creameries and Jeni’s
Splendid Ice Cream, among others.
However, long before these extremely publicized
incidents food manufacturers have been looking
for a faster way to detect Listeria monocytogenes.
Traditional means of detection could take up
to five days before obtaining the results from a
laboratory, but new methods are emerging.
One example is through a biosensor chip that can
detect Listeria in a food sample in less than three
minutes. Invented by Dr. Carmen Gomes of Texas
A&M’s Department of Biological and Agricultural
Engineering the technology can detect as little
as one bacterium in a one-ounce sample of food
and could further be developed to detect other
pathogens other than Listeria.
Another example is the Sample6 Detect/L.
Currently certified by the USDA and the
Association of Official Agricultural Chemists,
Sample6 is the first in-plant, in-shift pathogen
detection for Listeria. This technology significantly
cuts down the time required do a test by providing
in-house results so that an outside laboratory
is not needed. Within minutes, it can detect as
little as one cell of Listeria without enrichment,
automatically reading and recording results.
Although on-site testing won't remove the Listeria
contamination, if it’s manifestation could be
detected earlier, greater cost-effective measures
could be taken to remove its presence from the
food processing plant, thus increasing efficiency
and reducing the number of illnesses associated
with the pathogen.
