Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was a British writer best known for creating the character Sherlock Holmes. He introduced Holmes in 1887's A Study in Scarlet, the first of four novels and 56 short stories featuring Holmes and Dr. Watson. The Sherlock Holmes stories helped establish the field of crime fiction. In addition to the Holmes stories, Doyle wrote other fiction, non-fiction, plays, romances and poetry. He was a prolific and popular writer during his lifetime.
